Book Synopsis The Meaning of Pentecost in Early Methodism by : Laurence W. Wood
Download or read book The Meaning of Pentecost in Early Methodism written by Laurence W. Wood and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2002-09-23 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Fletcher's theology of Pentecost is generally unknown today, and this book is the first comprehensive treatise on this subject. His writings were in large part responsible for shaping the theology of early American Methodism, especially his treatise on Christian Perfection, which highlighted a theology of Pentecostal sanctification. Wood recounts the decisive influence Fletcher had on early Methodism, and shows that his writings were able to "control the opinions of the largest and most effective body of evangelical clergymen of the earth." Fletcher's views on the Holy Spirit were also relevant in the ecumenical movement, specifically with reference to the World Council of Churches Commission on Faith and Order held in Lima, Peru, in 1982. This group recommended the introduction of a liturgy of the Spirit in Christian baptism. For students and scholars or general readers interested in Methodist history and theology. Also a resource for pastors-helpful in developing a theology of Pentecost that will preach in a relevant way in the contemporary world.

Book Synopsis Religion, Gender, and Industry by : Geordan Hammond
Download or read book Religion, Gender, and Industry written by Geordan Hammond and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-11-04 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What part did religion play in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Britain? How did the local situation differ from the national picture? What was the role of women in society and the church? And how did the emerging centers of industrial activity interact with the places in which they sprung up? These are wide questions, but they can be seen in microcosm in one small area of the English midlands: the parish of Madeley, Shropshire, in which was the "birthplace of the industrial revolution," Coalbrookdale. Here, the evangelical Methodist clergyman John Fletcher ministered between 1760 and 1785, among a population including Catholics and Quakers as well people indifferent to religion. Then, for nearly sixty years after his death, two women, Fletcher's widow and later her protege, had virtual charge of the parish, which became one of the last examples of Methodism remaining within the Church of England. Through examining this specific locality, these essays engage particularly with areas of broader significance, including: Methodism's roots and growth in relation to the Church of England, religion and gender in eighteenth-century Britain, and religion and emerging industrial society. The last decade has seen substantial growth in studies of John and Mary Fletcher, early Methodism, and its relationship to the Church of England. Religion, Gender, and Industry offers a contribution to this developing area of research. The groundbreaking essays in this volume are written by an international group of scholars and present the latest research in this field. The contributions in this volume, originally presented at a conference in Shropshire in 2009, address these themes from multidisciplinary perspectives, including history, theology, gender studies, and industry. In addition to furthering knowledge of Madeley parish and its relation to larger themes in eighteenth-century Britain, the impact of the Fletchers in nineteenth-century American Methodism is examined.

Download or read book Around the Table written by Jonathan P. Case and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these days of uncivil public discourse--complete with trolling, hater comments, CAPSLOCKING, and generally acting like jerks towards each other--talking graciously about anything is becoming a lost art. Throw religion into the mix ("Well, my Bible says . . . ") and you've got one huge toxic mess. Is it possible for Christians to become more thoughtful and gracious conversation partners as we talk through our theological disagreements? How can we keep from throwing around the term heretic! every time someone disagrees with us? And remember, it's a big world out there. If arguing with other Christians isn't difficult enough, how do we think about engaging members of other religions? What's the point of talking with them? They don't know God anyway, right? Then there are all those agnostics and atheists, accusing believers of ignorance and calling for the end of religion. Why should we even want to talk with these people? Aren't they our enemies? What can we possibly learn from them? In this book, Jonathan Case explores, from a Christian theological perspective, what's at stake in these conversations and suggests how to keep people talking through their disagreements about that most volatile subject: God.

Book Synopsis Robert Southey, The Life of Wesley; and the Rise and Progress of Methodism by : Tim Fulford
Download or read book Robert Southey, The Life of Wesley; and the Rise and Progress of Methodism written by Tim Fulford and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of Wesley was one of Southey’s most influential and bestselling works. It was the first biography of John Wesley – the major figure in the largest religious movement of the eighteenth century – to be published by anyone beyond the Methodist community. In addition, it was a major history of the rise of a phenomenon that Southey and many others saw as a defining sign of contemporary history – the rise of sectarianism and of religious cults. This two-volume edition will represent the full text of the 1820 edition. It will include a comprehensive critical apparatus that will make sense of the major issues posed by the text and how it contributes to studies of both Southey and Romanticism. The edition will feature a critical and contextual introduction, which will set out the origins and composition of the text together with its publication history, as well as offer a carefully considered view of the interplay between the Life and other biographies of Wesley and accounts of Methodism, bringing into view the wide array of sources and influences Southey drew from. It will also examine the book’s reception history, incorporating material from reviews of the period and detailing the controversy it caused in the Methodist community.
