This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of Gilded Age literature and culture, Ben Railton proposes that in the years after Reconstruction, America's identity was often connected through distinct and competing conceptions of the nation's history. Concerned with key social questions such as race, Native Americans, women, and the South, "Contesting the Past, Reconstructing the Nation" provided close readings of a number of texts for the ways they highlight these issues. This book examines established classics, newer additions to the canon, largely forgotten best-sellers, recovery gems, and autobiographical works by Douglass and Truth, poems by Harper and Piatt, and short stories by Woolson and Cooke. These readings contribute to ongoing conversations over historical literature's definition and value, and a greater understanding of not only American society in the Gilded Age, but also debates on our shared but contested history that remain very much alive in the present. -- From publisher's description.

Book excerpt: This volume of collected essays offers truly multiethnic, historically comparative, and meta-theoretical readings of the literature and culture of the United States. Covering works by a diverse set of American authors - from Toni Morrison to Bret Harte - these essays provide a vital supplement to the critical literary canon, mapping a newly variegated terrain that refuses the distinction between “ethnic” and “nonethnic” literatures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peculiar Afterlife of Slavery explores how antiblack racism lived on through the figure of the Chinese worker in US literature after emancipation. Drawing out the connections between this liminal figure and the formal aesthetics of blackface minstrelsy in literature of the Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction eras, Caroline H. Yang reveals the ways antiblackness structured US cultural production during a crucial moment of reconstructing and re-narrating US empire after the Civil War. Examining texts by major American writers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—including Harriet Beecher Stowe, Bret Harte, Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce, Sui Sin Far, and Charles Chesnutt—Yang traces the intertwined histories of blackface minstrelsy and Chinese labor. Her bold rereading of these authors' contradictory positions on race and labor sees the figure of the Chinese worker as both hiding and making visible the legacy of slavery and antiblackness. Ultimately, The Peculiar Afterlife of Slavery shows how the Chinese worker manifests the inextricable links between US literature, slavery, and empire, as well as the indispensable role of antiblackness as a cultural form in the United States.
