Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wondrous Wife If you had been untrue to me because you were madly in love with another woman, she wrote, I believe I could have forgiven you. How do I know you were not? Because, although you foolishly tried to conceal your intrigue from me, you told half a dozen of your friends. Apparently you took quite unnecessary pains that they should know. Why? Because, for you, the real charm of the epi sode - which, if it had not been forced upon my no tice, would have remained an episode - depended on its being known and talked about. I might forgive a wound to my affection, or even to my pride, but I can not continue to live with a man who insults my intelligence. Her conviction that, but for her discovery, her husband's association with Laura Dacre would have been merely an episode was not weakened by his emphatic assertion that he intended to live his own life. She did not lay claim to an extraordinary knowledge of human nature, but she was quite sure that a man only finds it necessary to say that he means to live his own life when he is about to live somebody else's. She refused her husband's offer of an allowance, and as her own private in come was too small to support her in decency, went to live with her only brother, a Bristol solicitor, who was fourteen years older than herself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Water of the Wondrous Isles Whilom, as tells the tale, was a walled cheaping-town hight Utterhay, which was builded in a bight of the land a little off the great highway which went from over the mountains to the sea. The said town was hard on the borders of a wood, which men held to be mighty great, or maybe measureless; though few indeed had entered it, and they that had, brought back tales wild and confused thereof. Therein was neither highway nor byway, nor wood-reeve nor way-warden; never came chapman thence into Utterhay; no man of Utterhay was so poor or so bold that he durst raise the hunt therein; no outlaw durst flee thereto; no man of God had such trust in the saints that he durst build him a cell in that wood. For all men deemed it more than perilous; and some said that there walked the worst of the dead; othersome that the Goddesses of the Gentiles haunted there, others again that it was the faery rather, but they full of malice and guile. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Some times, when she started involuntarily at the thought that it was time for Margaret's wine, or her soup, or her medicine, her heart thus sharply pricked would rouse up, and her eyes gain relief in the measureless tears of youth. But she did not come to herself for days, scarcely until the time of dark ness was over, and the procession had gone out from the cottage doors, and her sister was carried away from her, while she herself remained behind. The great capitals of the world - London, Paris, Rome - present the phenomenon of a stone dropped into a surface of water. The expanding circles of population, widening and receding, leave a central calm - the calm of history, of traditions, of cherished memories, the solidifying calm of monu mented generations. But New York is like an up turned bottle, constantly charged with champagne through its narrow neck, and this restless, increasing pressure, driving from the Battery to Central Park, has not only in one generation consumed its ancient residential area and dispersed its once conservative landmarks but created a new and' feverish society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Husbands and Wives The inspiration for this book is derived from my long experience in the courts. This has brought me into direct contact with the old, dusty, tangled web of the marriage relation. To the disinterested observer, it is evident that the married pair themselves are responsible for al most every case of divorce. From my point of vantage, I saw what those with but one experi ence could not see, how the obstacles to happi ness in marriage might have been avoided, and I felt that could I make them see it, the in creasingly difficult problem of marriage and divorce would, in great part, be solved. So, with the highest ideal for the future in crease of happiness for the human race, I began this story of Husbands and Wives. As the work progressed, I found myself constantly in danger of losing this high ideal. But, as science is built upon the truth as gained from actual experience, and as that is the only safe founda tion upon which to build, I have struggled to present, not merely the facts, but the spirit of what my experience has brought to me.
