Dr. Kneeland was a Boston physician founding member and later professor of zoology at MIT. He wrote several books, including this, from careful diaries kept during his zoological-collecting expeditions. This book is from two trips by Dr. Kneeland to California, taken sometime during 1869 to 1871. Full illustrated Book. The photographs were supposely taken by John P. Soule of Massachusetts, although there's disagreement as to whether he traveled to California or just purchased the negatives. Kneeland, a professor of zoology and physiology and secretary of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from its founding in 1865 until 1878, produced one of the better guide books to the Yosemite region. It is an especially attractive book due to the inclusion of an excellent series of mounted photographic images.

Of El Capitan, Whitney says "it seems as if hewed from the mountains on purpose to 6tand as the type of eternal massiveness. It is doubtful if anywhere in the world is presented so squarely cut, so lofty, and so imposing a face of rock." In a recess in one corner is the "Virgin's Tears" fall, 1,000 feet high, rarely seen by travellers, as the creek which supplies it is dried up early in the season; it is superior, while it lasts, to the famous Staubbach fall in Switzerland, the admiration of Alpine tourists, and one of the finest in Europe. The Indian name of El Capitan is "Tutocanula," said to be an imitation of the cry of the cranes, which in winter used to enter the valley over this rock. Directly opposite is the beautiful "Bridal Veil" fall, about 700 feet in perpendicular height, and 200 more of cascades as it rushes over the debris at the bottom of "Cathedral Rock," over which it pours; the creek which supplies this fall, you pass when going to " Sentinel the "Bridal Veil" falls, are Capitan; though only about whichever way you look at called the "Spires" are so Dome," and the coolness of its clear water is sure to be tasted by the traveller aud his horse. In the dialect of the Indians, this is "Pohono"--a blast of wind, or the night wind, from the chilliness of the air experienced by coming under the cliff, and perhaps from the swaying of the sheet in the wind like a veil; others think Pohono was an evil spirit, whose breath was a dangerous and deadly wind. Whatever its derivation, the poetical name of the Indian is, here as in other places in the valley, much superior to the English one. As in all the falls, ...

Sierra nevada Snowy Range - has been well renamed by John Muir the Range of Light; for these mountains of California are the Illumined Mountains. Their mural walls rise to over thirteen thousand feet, and the battlemented peaks and domes fifteen hun dred feet higher in the clouds. On their flanks and lower sides are the Clark covers of the world's greatest coniferous forests; above, the High Sierra glows, amber - like in the afternoon sun of summer, graced with chains of pearl - like mountain lakes and each high peak throated with a scarf of snow. These high granite walls are here and there riven by great chasms, ice-sculptured on a mighty plan. Of these deep Sierra rifts, the greatest in sheer walls and mighty waterfalls is the Yosemite. The Yosemite National Park is in the heart of the Sierra in central - eastern California, and is now easy of access - none of the American wonderlands more so. From north and south the Southern Pacific joins the Yosemite Valley Railroad at Merced, and the latter with a journey of eighty miles up the beautiful Merced River takes the traveler to the park line El Portal. A stage ride of fo'urteen miles completes the trip to the heart of the Valley. Both at El Portal and in the Valley are such ties to civilization the year round as steam heated, electric - lighted hotels, with telephone, telegraph and express offices. There are comfortable tent villages in summer for those who would be out-of - doors; and for others, nearer kin to the wilderness and who would rest beneath bright stars, there is the whole width of the Sierra, with dry, clear summer nights and sunny days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Yosemite Valley: Its History, Characteristic Features, and Theories Regarding Its Origin In 1904, when ninety years of age, Mr. Clark published a book on the Indians of the Yosemite, which was followed in 1907 by a volume on the Big Trees of California. These books are written in a simple and entertaining style and have proven valuable contributions to the lit erature of Western America. They have been widely read and are regarded as the most authoritative works on the subjects of which they treat. So far as I know, Mr. Clark's experience has been absolutely unique in becoming an author at the age of ninety. In this, his latest and most pretentious book, the manuscript of which he had personally handed to his printer less than two weeks before being summoned to his last account, he succinctly and delightfully presents descriptions of all the cataracts and waterfalls, Spires and domes, trees and flowers, islands and lakes, rivers and vales, and the multi plicity of other objects which have made the Yosemite Vallev the masterpiece of the scenic world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes of Wonder and Curiosity in California: Illustrated With Over One Hundred Engravings; A Tourist's Guide to the Yo-Semite Valley For a day or two he allowed the matter to rest - submitting, with chuckling satisfaction, to the occasional jocular allusions to his big tree yarn, and continued his hunting as formerly. On the Sunday morning following, he went out early as usual, and returned in haste, evidently excited by some event. Boys, he exclaimed, I have killed the largest grizzly bear that I ever saw in my life. While I am getting a little something to eat, you make preparations to bring him in. All had better go that can possibly be Spared, as their assistance will certainly be needed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch of Yosemite National Park and an Account of the Origin of the Yosemite and Hetch Hetchy Valleys Many people believe that the Yosemite National Park consists principally of the Yosemite Valley and its bordering heights. The name of the park, indeed, would seem to justify that belief, yet noth ing could 'be further from the truth. The Yosemite Valley, though by far the grandest feature of the region, occupies only a small part of the tract. The famous valley measures but a scant 7 miles in length; the park, on the other hand, comprises no less than square miles, an area slightly larger than the State of Rhode Island, or about one-fourth as large as Connecticut. Within this area lie scores of lofty peaks and noble mountains, as well as many beautiful valleys and profound canyons; among others, the Hetch Hetchy Valley and the Tuolumne Canyon, each scarcely less wonderful than the Yosemite Valley itself. Here also are foaming rivers and cool, swift trout brooks; countless emerald lakes that reflect the granite peaks about them; and vast stretches of stately forest, in which many of the famous giant trees of California still survive. The Yosemite National Park lies near the crest of the great alpine range of California, the Sierra Nevada. To the initiated this fact in itself means a great deal, for the Sierra Nevada is a land not only of scenic wonders, but of marvelous climate - a climate paralleled by that of few mountain regions elsewhere in the world. It has a climate of sunshine and serene skies; dry, but not too dry; in summer warm but not uncomfortably warm; withal characterized by nights that are cool, even frosty at the higher levels. The winters are cold enough to insure a snowfall of 2 to 4 feet in the lowest valleys and to maintain perpetual ice fields and glaciers on the highest crests. One goes to the Yosemite region not merely to admire its cliffs and waterfalls, nor to walk through the aisles of its great forests, but to revel in the full enjoyment of these wonders in the pure, invigorating air and the restful calm that reigns from day to day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yosemite National Park: California An Appreciation of Yosemite NationalPark By Harriet Monroe. Editor of Poetry, a Magazine of Verse Wrilltm Especially for ihe United Stales Railroad Administration Wice and each time through an entire July I have tramped with the CaHfornia Sierra Club through the grandest areas of the Yosemite National Park. I have camped in the Valley, in Tuolumne Meadows, and in the lost Hetch-Hetchy sleeping to the sound of rushing waters with mountains towering around me. I have crossed Vogelsang Pass when the mountain hemlocks were just slipping off their wet mantles of snow; I have descended the formidable Tuolumne Canyon past the third fall; and under Mount Dana I have looked down over the red rocks of Bloody Canyon to Lake Mono, lying incredibly blue among the pink and lilac craters of dead volcanoes. My memories of this prismatically shattered earth are sharp in details of beauty, but all of them rise against white granite and falling waters. Never anywhere else can there be mountains so silver-white - El Capitan shouldering the sky, Clouds Rest and the two great Domes giving back the sun, and Ritter, Lyell and Dana, fierce and jagged, guarding their inscrutable heights. And through the crevices of this gleaming granite run everywhere crystal streams streams mad with joy that foam as they fly, and shout as they take enormous leaps over stark precipices. All kinds of falling waters - the delicate cascades of Illilouette; the wind-blown tulle of Bridal Veil; Nevada, lacy, white-fingered, taking her 600-foot leap like a step in a dance; Vernal, broad-shouldered, strong-bodied, massive, as he jumps like an athlete; and, most wonderful of all, Yosemite, that Upper Yosemite Fall whose leap is 1,500 feet a tall white living figure against the formidable cliff, a figure moving and breathing, tossing the spray from his eyes, shining tall and straight there like a young Greek god. Everywhere waters falling over and under and into white granite, falling in ribbons and rivers and cataracts, ringing golden bells, booming great guns, spraying the little flowers and the giant sequoias as they pass. Everywhere splendor a world gorgeous, exultant, full of color and motion, existing for itself, for its own joy, and taking man on sufferance, as it were, if he will accept its terms and be free of soul. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yosemite Trails: Camp and Pack-Train in the Yosemite Region of the Sierra Nevada Journeys, two of them of considerable length, through the Yosemite region of the Sierra Nevada, and of a resulting desire to acquaint the nature-lov ing public with the attractions more particularly of the less known areas of the locality. The writer has preferred not to limit his work to the specific uses of a guide-book, but has allowed a natural propensity for a loose rein and discursive observation to dictate its range; with the result, he hopes, of a gain in variety and interest both to the general reader and to the prospective and retrospective wayfarer in the region. The volume will be found, however, to have also much of the value of a guide-book for the travel ler on the ground, and with this point in view it is furnished with a map.
