Book excerpt: "The quality of the deep-sky images is outstanding--a tribute to the various photographers as well as the book's printer. But it's the written word that will make or break a book like this, and Sue's writing is superb... [For] an occasional stargazer, a serious observer, or anyone in between, you won't go wrong with Deep-Sky Wonders. This is a great introduction to deep-sky stargazing for novice and experienced amateur astronomers alike." --Mercury, publication of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific Sue French writes the popular column "Deep-Sky Wonders" for Sky and Telescope magazine and also teaches deep sky observation. She has earned a loyal following among enthusiasts and is welcomed by beginners for her skill at presenting astronomy in an understandable way. After selling 10,000 copies of Deep-Sky Wonders in hardcover, we expect a good response for this paperback edition at an accessible price. Deep-Sky Wonders is a collection of 100 of French's best "Deep-Sky Wonders" columns originally published in Sky and Telescope, which has a monthly readership exceeding 100,000. Each deep sky tour illuminates little-known seasonal wonders that lie off the beaten path. Features include: Full-color photographs and detailed sketches of each deep sky tour Descriptions of double and variable stars, star clusters, nebulae, galaxies and exotics Historical and scientific background of particular interest A tabular listing of the deep-sky sites Color charts showing the position of each target in the night sky An index to all of the deep-sky objects covered. Deep-Sky Wonders also features a variety of challenging objects that encourage observers to test the limits of their equipment and skills. Suitable for beginner and intermediate small-scope astronomers as well as large-scope viewers and astrophotographers, this book will be greeted enthusiastically by all Sky and Telescope readers. It is also an outstanding introduction to deep-sky viewing for novice observers.

In this book, Sky & Telescope contributing editor Stephen James O'Meara presents a month-by-month selection of Scotty's columns along with insightful observations and warm recollections of his time with Scotty. Book excerpt: A pioneering marine biologist takes us down into the deep ocean in this 'thrilling blend of hard science and high adventure' (New York Times) LONGLISTED FOR THE SNHN NATURAL HISTORY BOOK PRIZE Edith Widder grew up determined to become a marine biologist. But after complications from a surgery during college caused her to go temporarily blind, she became fascinated by light as well as the power of optimism. Below the Edge of Darkness explores the depths of the planet's oceans as Widder seeks to understand bioluminescence, one of the most important and widely used forms of communication in nature. In the process, she reveals hidden worlds and a dazzling menagerie of behaviours and animals. Alongside Widder, we experience life-and-death equipment malfunctions and witness breakthroughs in technology and understanding, all of it set against a growing awareness of the deteriorating health of our largest and least understood ecosystem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ocean is full of weird and wonderful things that have been created by God. This book only tells a little bit. It is just the tip of the iceberg. The Bible says, "O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches. So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts." Psalm 104:24-25 I have chosen six ocean animals to write about, as well as random fish. Since there are so many different kinds of fish, there are double lessons from fish. My children, Hannah, Esther, and Joseph, have helped me make drawings. To find their drawings, look for their names. I drew the ones with no names. I am a preschool teacher. One term at preschool, we did an ocean theme. I realized that I knew hardly anything about ocean animals. So, I studied a bit, so I could teach the children. It made me want to write another devotional. But there were two problems. I had already started another devotional that I had not finished. And I hardly had any time to write. I decided I couldn't do it. But God made it clear to me in lots of little ways that He wanted to do it. The verse above is one of them. I am also a Bible story teacher at our Christian school. At the time, I was teaching the story of Johnathan when he went up to fight the Philistines. It is a very exciting story! You can read it in 1 Samuel 13-14. But Johnathan was able to win victory against the many Philistines with only 2 swords and a very small army. God helped him and that made all the difference. This is what I wrote in my journal. I have very little time to write (And I'm still not finished my Buildings book). But the Israelites won against the Philistines with only two sharp swords and a small army. I have the disadvantage of little time. And the ideas and the wonders of God's creation is overwhelming. But I can trust God, like Johnathan, and He will make a little go a long way. That is exactly what happened. When I obeyed God and started using the little bit of spare time I had to study ocean animals and find lessons to learn, God helped me to write and finish this book. He gets all the credit.

Professor Alex Rogers is one of the world's leading experts in marine biology and oceanology, and has spent his life studying the deep ocean - and in particular the impact of human activity on the ecosystems of the oceans. In this timely, galvanising and fascinating book - replete with stunning photography of strange and beautiful creatures - Professor Rogers offers a fundamentally optimistic view of humanity's relationship with the oceans - and also a very personal account of his own interaction with the seas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central message of this book is that the well-being of body, mind, spirit, and planet requires that we nurture our connections. From our skin to the cosmic, to sights and sounds to the Transcendent, this book takes us by the hand to marvel at how life itself is a constellation of interrelationships of touch. We cannot not touch and be touched. Humans live in a biosphere of touch, the touch thriving and bustling within our bodies, the touch of our relationships with family and friends, the touch between neighbors, the touch with Mother Nature, and the touch with the Transcendent. Selfishness, and self-centeredness are the powers withering us and the planet. In our confrontation with our anxiety at death, guilt, and meaningless, we sever the very interrelations that nourish and enrich life. It is imperative, as perhaps never before, that we restore our touch with our deepest selves, others, Mother Nature, and the Transcendent.
