Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new witch in town, a brutal bloodbath, and I'm out of options. Evil gathers in the Louisiana swamps, and it comes for the witches of New Orleans. If I had known, maybe I would have kept my guard up; I would have spent more time securing the city instead of spending my time learning about magick, and trying to bring witches and vampires together. But vanquishing the demon-bloods left us complacent, and comfortable. We celebrated, and enjoyed the period of peace that followed. Now we have no idea of the danger we're all in. When unidentified vampires come in the night, swift and deadly, the witches of the city are left scattered, hurt, and broken. Though I'm wracked with grief for the injured and the dead, I have to find a way to lead, but there are those who won't make that easy for me; those who would rather go back to the old days, where witches killed vampires with impunity, whether they were decent people or not. I can't allow that to happen. We worked too hard to make New Orleans an inclusive place, and I'll die before I let someone destroy everything we've built.

Book Synopsis Witchcraft, the Devil, and Emotions in Early Modern England by : Charlotte-Rose Millar
Download or read book Witchcraft, the Devil, and Emotions in Early Modern England written by Charlotte-Rose Millar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first systematic study of the role of the Devil in English witchcraft pamphlets for the entire period of state-sanctioned witchcraft prosecutions (1563-1735). It provides a rereading of English witchcraft, one which moves away from an older historiography which underplays the role of the Devil in English witchcraft and instead highlights the crucial role that the Devil, often in the form of a familiar spirit, took in English witchcraft belief. One of the key ways in which this book explores the role of the Devil is through emotions. Stories of witches were made up of a complex web of emotionally implicated accusers, victims, witnesses, and supposed perpetrators. They reveal a range of emotional experiences that do not just stem from malefic witchcraft but also, and primarily, from a witch’s links with the Devil. This book, then, has two main objectives. First, to suggest that English witchcraft pamphlets challenge our understanding of English witchcraft as a predominantly non-diabolical crime, and second, to highlight how witchcraft narratives emphasized emotions as the primary motivation for witchcraft acts and accusations.

Download or read book Entertaining Satan written by John Demos and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-14 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first edition of the Bancroft Prize-winning Entertaining Satan, John Putnam Demos presented an entirely new perspective on American witchcraft. By investigating the surviving historical documents of over a hundred actual witchcraft cases, he vividly recreated the world of New England during the witchcraft trials and brought to light fascinating information on the role of witchcraft in early American culture. Now Demos has revisited his original work and updated it to illustrate why these early Americans' strange views on witchcraft still matter to us today. He provides a new Preface that puts forth a broader overview of witchcraft and looks at its place around the world--from ancient times right up to the present.
Download or read book Wrath written by Peter W. Wood and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anger now dominates American politics. It wasn’t always so. “Happy Days Are Here Again” was FDR’s campaign song in 1932. By contrast, candidate Kamala Harris’s 2020 campaign song was Mary J. Blige’s “Work That” (“Let ‘em get mad / They gonna hate anyway”). Both the left and right now summon anger as the main way to motivate their supporters. Post-election, both sides became even more indignant. The left accuses the right of “insurrection.” The right accuses the left of fraud. This is a book about how we got here—about how America changed from a nation that could be roused to anger but preferred self-control, to a nation permanently dialed to eleven. Peter W. Wood, an anthropologist, has rewritten his 2007 book, A Bee in the Mouth: Anger in America, which predicted the new era of political wrath. In his new book, he explains how American culture beginning in the 1950s made a performance art out of anger; how and why we brought anger into our music, movies, and personal lives; and how, having step by step relinquished our old inhibitions on feeling and expressing anger, we turned anger into a way of wielding political power. But the “angri-culture,” as he calls it, doesn’t promise happy days again. It promises revenge. And a crisis that could destroy our republic.

Book Synopsis Premodern Beliefs and Witch Trials in a Swedish Province, 1669-1672 by : Göran Malmstedt
Download or read book Premodern Beliefs and Witch Trials in a Swedish Province, 1669-1672 written by Göran Malmstedt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the worldview and perceptions of reality that formed the setting for the witch trials held in the Swedish province of Bohuslän in 1669-1672. The first part of the book explores the conduct of the trials and provides, among other things, an analysis of the defendants and of the various accusations from neighbours and the court. The following parts analyse the perceptions of reality found in the statements made in court by witnesses and the accused. The topics addressed include the relationship between dreams and reality, belief in shape-shifting, the power of words, emotions, and magically charged matters, as well as perceptions of God and the Devil. The beliefs that surfaced during the trials were part of a general mentality that characterised people’s perception of the world, both before and after the trials. As the records from the prolonged cross-examinations of the accused are unusually detailed, the defendant’s statements, together with accusations, testimonies, and the courts’ questions, provides a unique insight into premodern worldviews.
