But meeting her mentor’s friend—a gorgeous witch named Wren—rips Abby’s intentions to hell when Wren’s magic sparks to life more than Abby’s attraction. Wren has never shared a connection so strong with another witch and she isn’t sure she wants to. Her last relationship ended with a funeral, but Abby’s energy is impossible to resist and soon Wren isn’t sure what she wants more–her old life back, or a future with Abby. When Abby’s mentor’s girlfriend walks into the shop dripping with dark magic, Abby enlists Wren’s help to find the source. Whoever is behind the dark energy only needs a couple of unwilling mediums to unleash pure evil onto the world—and it turns out Wren knows just the two mediums they're looking for.

Book excerpt: The Witch (1615/16?), categorised by its author as 'a tragi-comedy', pits the intrigues of a group of Italian aristocrats against the malevolent practices of Hecate and her witches' coven, leaving the audience with the impression that human malevolence is by far the fiercer and more effective. This edition sets the play into its dramatic and literary contexts, ranging from Shakespeare's Macbeth and Middleton's own later tragedies to Reginald Scot's sceptical Discovery of Witchcraft and King James's virulent Daemonologie. It also argues that Middleton wrote it as a topical satire to capitalise on the scandal involving Frances Howard, who obtained a divorce from the Earl of Essex on the grounds that he had been sexually incapacitated by witchcraft; she was also rumoured to have tried to poison him. Middleton exposes his noble characters precisely by letting them get away with murder.

Book excerpt: The earth, the moon, and the magical path to enlightenment. Written by a practicing witch who conducts classes and seminars on witchcraft—the oldest Western religion, a means of power and enlightenment, and a healing art. “Laurie Cabot has written a fascinating account of a beautiful and sadly misunderstood religion, witchcraft. She has with her life and work done a great deal to legitimize this ancient pagan form of worship. I am among the ecumenical Christians who have discovered the truth about witchcraft, that it is neither demonic nor evil. Power of the Witch is a marvelous introduction to the magical and highly ethical world of wicca.”—Whitley Strieber

Book excerpt: One year after the death of her boyfriend, Cecily is ready to re-launch her life, starting with moving her over-worked sister, Zander, back to Seattle. The trouble is Scott—the sexy, tattoo artist brother of Zander's boyfriend—who is making the move, too. Crushing on Scott while her ex literally haunts her is awkward... and apparently unavoidable. Ah, life as a medium. Scott fell for Cecily the first time he heard her voice. There’s only one problem: she’s Zander’s little sister, and crossing that line risks the newfound balance he’s fought for—and a secret he’s been keeping for too long. When Zander’s behavior becomes erratic, they blame the pressure of the move—until she spirals in ways more supernatural than stressed. Cecily and Scott band together, navigating their attraction while helping to save Zander from the hidden darkness consuming her. But to banish the evil, they need a witch—and she might not make it in time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an exciting new approach to witchcraft studies, The Witch in the Western Imagination examines the visual representation of witches in early modern Europe. With vibrant and lucid prose, Lyndal Roper moves away from the typical witchcraft studies on trials, beliefs, and communal dynamics and instead considers the witch as a symbolic and malleable figure through a broad sweep of topics and time periods. Employing a wide selection of archival, literary, and visual materials, Roper presents a series of thematic studies that range from the role of emotions in Renaissance culture to demonology as entertainment, and from witchcraft as female embodiment to the clash of cultures on the brink of the Enlightenment. Rather than providing a vast synthesis or survey, this book is questioning and exploratory in nature and illuminates our understanding of the mental and psychic worlds of people in premodern Europe. Roper’s spectrum of theoretical interests will engage readers interested in cultural history, psychoanalytic theory, feminist theory, art history, and early modern European studies. These essays, three of which appear here for the first time in print, are complemented by more than forty images, from iconic paintings to marginal drawings on murals or picture frames. In her unique focus on the imagery of witchcraft, Lyndal Roper has succeeded in adding a compelling new dimension to the study of witchcraft in early modern Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Predicates and their Subjects is an in-depth study of the syntax-semantics interface focusing on the structure of the subject-predicate relation. Starting from where the author's 1983 dissertation left off, the book argues that there is syntactic constraint that clauses (small and tensed) are constructed out of a one-place unsaturated expression, the predicate, which must be applied to a syntactic argument, its subject. The author shows that this predication relation cannot be reduced to a thematic relation or a projection of argument structure, but must be a purely syntactic constraint. Chapters in the book show how the syntactic predication relation is semantically interpreted, and how the predication relation explains constraints on DP-raising and on the distribution of pleonastics in English. The second half of the book extends the theory of predication to cover copular constructions; it includes an account of the structure of small clauses in Hebrew, of the use of `be' in predicative and identity sentences in English, and concludes with a study of the meaning of the verb `be'.
