Book excerpt: When fourteen-year-old best friends Evan and Valarie hear that a tiny deserted island in the Blackstone River is haunted by Abigail The Witch, they are determined to see it for themselves. Even though it's the middle of winter, they devise a way to get there to do some exploring. The trip is dangerous but well worth it. In the abandoned ruins of a old house, they discover a jewel-encrusted enchanted book. The magical book reveals that Abigail was a tragic victim of the Salem Witch Trials. Even now her restless spirit continues to seek revenge on the descendants of those who hurt her. The book's authors, the mystical Coven of Light, created their tome as a way to bring to rest spirits like Abigail who are trapped in limbo. Its message: if Evan and Valarie follow the book's instructions to the letter, they can both bring peace to Abigail and prevent her from claiming any more victims. But soothing restless spirits is rarely easy, and Abigail has had over 300 years to feed the flames of her anger. Evan and Valarie will have to draw on strength they don't even realize they possess if they are to survive the night and bring peace to a tortured soul.

Book excerpt: From the author of The Freemason’s Daughter comes a lush romantic fantasy perfect for fans of Everless! In the world of healers, there is no room for magic. Fee knows this, just as certainly as she knows that her magic must be kept secret. But the crown prince Xavi, Fee’s best friend and only source of comfort, is sick. So sick, that Fee can barely contain the magic lying dormant inside her. She could use it, just a little, to heal him. But magic comes at a deadly cost—and attracts those who would seek to snuff it out forever. A wisp of a spell later, Fee finds herself caught in a whirl of secret motivations and dark pasts, where no one is who—or what—they appear to be. And saving her best friend means delving deeper into the tempting and treacherous world whose call she’s long resisted—uncovering a secret that will change everything. Laini Taylor meets Sara Holland in this lavish fantasy from lauded historical romance author Shelley Sackier!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the inescapable truths that humanity has to grapple with is the reality of death. The manner in which we die, or the cause of our death, may differ, but death remains inevitable. We may be afraid of it or not; we may try to evade it, or not, but death still comes. Although most religions promise the possibility of another life in the hereafter, there is no scientifically verifiable evidence about the reality of that life. Despite that lack of evidence, every culture performs death rituals meticulously to prepare the spirits of its deceased for whatever form of life that may be available. Death Rituals among the Karanga of Zimbabwe: Praxis, Significance, and Changes explores the causes of sickness and death, and the praxis of pre-burial, burial, and post-burial rituals of the Karanga of Zimbabwe in an attempt to unearth their original form and significance, to identify the changes that have taken place. It also provides a brief manual for the performance of some selected Karanga death rituals.

Book excerpt: DELVE INTO THE REALM OF TWILIGHT is a novel set during the height of Louis XIV, dealing with the realm of magic and witchcraft that manifests in the insatiable desires of three witches as they abduct a mortal as their eternal lover. The mortal, Alexus, becomes immortal, living in the Realm of Twilight, a parallel dimension. Arian, Alexus' wife, sacrifices herself to save her husband. For Arian's interference, Arian is trapped herself in the Realm of Twilight and is forced to endure seeing Alexus throughout time be reincarnated and married to whomever he chooses never will she have that option as she has been entombed alive. Imprisoned for 300 years, Arian finally has the chance to escape, providing that she can contact Alexus in the modern day, for he has reincarnated as Sebastian Simons. And if she does contact him, he has a family. If her spell can be broken, will she age her 300 years? The witches are immortal as well and have the same possibility of capturing and killing her husband, rather than imprisonment. Is her love and sacrifice, ideals of the past, still pertinent after 300 years? Magic and fortune telling has mesmerized humanity for centuries. DELVE INTO THE REALM OF TWIGLIGHT is steeped with poetic spells tantalizing the reader with an array of topics depicting resurrection, cloaking, memory loss and, of course, love potions.

Across the river a group of villagers laughed and played, and averted their eyes from the watching witch. They were afraid of her, but Bertha did not understand why. She was a good witch, after all. She had never cast a mean spell in her life, and wouldn't think of doing so. And so she was alone without a true friend - except for the ghosts that lived with her in the castle. But a ghost couldn't give her a hug when she was sad, and a ghost couldn't join her for dinner. She longed for a real and true living friend who could be her companion. And then after the strangest of circumstances, into her life came a talking red fish, a ghost witch, and a mystery to solve that was hundreds of years old. Could Bertha solve the mystery of the talking fish? Would she ever earn the respect of the villagers? And would she ever learn how to fly like a proper witch? Join the adventure as Bertha the White Witch sets out across three magical kingdoms in search of the missing guardians - and perhaps finds herself along the way. The Guardian of TeraMagoria is the first book in the TeraNor series for young adults, by author Heath Buckmaster.

This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vintage work contains a collection of the customs, usages, and ceremonies used among gypsies, as regards fortune-telling, witch-doctoring, love-philtering, and other sorcery, illustrated by many anecdotes and instances, taken either from works as yet very little known to the English reader or from personal experiences. Within a very few years, since Ethnology and Archaeology have received a great inspiration, and much enlarged their scope through Folk-lore, everything relating to such subjects is studied with far greater interest and to much greater profit than was the case when they were cultivated in a languid, half-believing, half-sceptical spirit which was in reality rather one of mere romance than reason. Now that we seek with resolution to find the whole truth, be it based on materialism, spiritualism, or their identity, we are amazed to find that the realm of marvel and mystery, of wonder and poetry, connected with what we vaguely call “magic,” far from being explained away or exploded, enlarges before us as we proceed, and that not into a mere cloudland, gorgeous land, but into a country of reality in which men of science who would once have disdained the mere thought thereof are beginning to stray.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of ‘performativity’ has risen to prominence throughout the humanities. The rise of financial derivatives reflects the power of the performative sign in the economic sphere. As recent debates about gender identity show, the concept of performativity is also profoundly influential on people’s personal lives. Although the autonomous power of representation has been studied in disciplines ranging from economics to poetics, however, it has not yet been evaluated in ethical terms. This book supplies that deficiency, providing an ethical critique of performative representation as it is manifested in semiotics, linguistics, philosophy, poetics, theology and economics. It constructs a moral criticism of the performative sign in two ways: first, by identifying its rise to power as a single phenomenon manifested in various different areas; and second, by locating efficacious representation in its historical context, thus connecting it to idolatry, magic, usury and similar performative signs. The book concludes by suggesting that earlier ethical critiques of efficacious representation might be revived in our own postmodern era.
