Book excerpt: The tales in this book are mainly about children and some as remembered by themselves as adults. They are varied in nature and comprise many strange constituents:1. 'The Witch of Kilmara': a supposed witch and a prophetic dream.2. 'Red Wheels': blemished bicycle wheels viewed from different perspectives.3. 'Jimmy the Hammer'': a macabre experience in a riding school.4. 'The Crock of Gold': an Irish exile with a unique plastic leprechaun.5. 'Cissie Mac and the Pope': an imaginative little miss with a hierarchical ambition.6. 'After the Races'; a man on the road to ruin and a betting dead certainty.7. 'Rope!': an unusual talisman against a bossy older brother.8. 'The Ball Alley': a treasured marble and a living corpse.9. 'Pairc na nGirseach': a demented old lady and a healing vision. 10. 'The Hollow': two boys with a rare but rather dubious gift.11. 'The Sharpshooter': a marksman with a moral dilemma that is tantalizingly left unanswered.Three short excerpts from the tales will give a certain taste of their diversity:'Looking back, there was nothing particularly macabre about the Riding School, at least on the outside, being a long, lowish, wooden building, half-open at the sides, with a curved, corrugated roof. But the inside was a different matter. It was always dark and gloomy in contrast to the outside, even in bright weather, and sunlight never seemed to have much of an effect on this, casting slanting beams of light within which were usually visible from the dust rising from the peat flooring. The soft peat also had the effect deadening the rhythmic hoof beats of horses being put through their paces and almost silencing human footsteps or obliterating them altogether. Even sounds from outside, such as the bleating of sheep or the shouts and laughter of children at play, became indistinct and muffled and seemed to come from far away as if filtered through some semi-insulating material. To young imaginations, such effects often bordered on the creepy side . . .( 'Jimmy the Hammer').'Since Billy's resentment of young Trevor was so multi-faceted, perhaps another reason for it was trichological. Trevor's hair was cut in a neat, page-boy fashion, which was rather unique in our town at the time. Our hair was never allowed to overflow our ears or obscure our vision, locks being summarily dealt with by the local barber who had his shop midway between the church and the newsagent's. Billy's style was also unique. Native stubble-field might best describe it - spikes of hair like wire all over his bullet-shaped head ('The Ball Alley). 'It is a beautiful field, untouched by plough or harrow and remains as nature has fashioned it over the centuries. It is even a magical place. It is softly carpeted with a variety of intermingled grasses and mosses and clovers, and in the summer, daisies, buttercups and cowslips, and a host of other pretty little wildflowers, form a colourful and variegated pattern as they poke their gay little blooms up between their greener neighbours. Four old chestnut trees occupy the corners of the field and their spreading branches provide shade and protection for the delicate complexions of the more beauty conscious among the little girls when the sun is either too hot or too high in the sky. ('Pairc na nGirseach)'.

"Our Friend Hedgehog feels like a modern-day Winnie the Pooh. It's so warm and full of joy and love. It's got classic written all over it." --Victoria Jamieson, Newbery Honor-winning author of Roller Girl Sometimes you make a friend, and it feels like you have known that friend your entire life. . . . Hedgehog lives on a teeny-tiny island with only her stuffed dog, Mutty, for company. When a great storm carries Mutty away, she embarks on a quest to find her friend. Following the trail of clues Mutty left behind, brave Hedgehog meets a wiggly Mole, a wordy Owl, a curmudgeonly Beaver, a scatterbrained Hen and Chicks, and a girl who's new to the neighborhood, Annika May. With bravery and teamwork, there's nothing that can stop these seven from finding Mutty, but along the way they discover something even more important: each other. The first book in a new series from Caldecott Honor winner Lauren Castillo, Our Friend Hedgehog: The Story of Us has the feel of a timeless classic, introducing an unforgettable cast of characters who will star in many more adventures to come.

Book excerpt: Ever wonder how Wreck Beach got its name? Or if it's always been a nude beach? What about the nudity? Is it against the law? Maybe you just want to know how to get to the best spots. Look no further: here's the book with everything you've always wanted to know about Wreck Beach, the best nude beach in the world. On any given day throughout the year, regardless of conditions, you're bound to find a spectrum of characters frolicking on the beach or in the water or alternately, huddling in that perfect sheltered spot. If sunshine and golden sands aren't enough to lure you down, maybe the amalgam of vendors will. Wreck Beach boasts an enviable array of munchies which may include Chinese BBQ pork buns, pizza, samosas with chutney, marijuana, and magic mushrooms. Entertainment includes Frisbee, skimboarding, impromptu jam sessions and the notorious male-only game of Beerball. Naturally pristine, yet indelibly ruled by the characters who sun, sell, and sign petitions there, Wreck Beach is a beachlover's paradise. The main beach at the bottom of Trail 6 is where the landscape is most beacher-friendly: sand as far as the eye can see, and ocean to boot. The enthusiastic work of the Wreck Beach Preservation Society has allowed it to continue to be so. The Society's committment to keeping it untarnished is reflected in its resistance to outside regulation, while at the same time emphasizing self-policing. The first comprehensive physical and political guide and a pioneer part of Wreck Beach history, Wreck Beach is your perfect guide to its splendour whether you're a local history buff, or just like swimming in the buff.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A buoyant, breathtaking poem from Juan Felipe Herrera — brilliantly illustrated by Caldecott Honoree Lauren Castillo — speaks to every dreaming heart. Have you ever imagined what you might be when you grow up? When he was very young, Juan Felipe Herrera picked chamomile flowers in windy fields and let tadpoles swim across his hands in a creek. He slept outside and learned to say good-bye to his amiguitos each time his family moved to a new town. He went to school and taught himself to read and write English and filled paper pads with rivers of ink as he walked down the street after school. And when he grew up, he became the United States Poet Laureate and read his poems aloud on the steps of the Library of Congress. If he could do all of that . . . what could you do? With this illustrated poem of endless possibility, Juan Felipe Herrera and Lauren Castillo breathe magic into the hopes and dreams of readers searching for their place in life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maguires of Tempo, whose substantial estate dated from the Ulster Plantation in 1610, were the only Gaelic family in Fermanagh to survive the upheavals of the next two centuries with their property more or less intact. By the time Constantine Maguire inherited in 1800, however, only a fraction remained. The extraordinary story of this resourceful, not to say ruthless, man's struggle to retain his social standing—in the course of which he married a famous courtesan and then fell in love with a mistress of his own—reads like a novel of the period. His brutal murder in Tipperary in 1832 was a suitably Gothic finishing touch to a rackety career. At a more serious level, the tale of "Captain Cohonny" throws useful light on some obscure aspects of life and death in early 19th century Ireland.
