Book Synopsis George Goring (1608–1657) by : Dr Florene S Memegalos
Download or read book George Goring (1608–1657) written by Dr Florene S Memegalos and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Goring was in many ways the archetypal cavalier, often portrayed as possessing all the worst characteristics associated with the followers of King Charles I. He drank copiously, dressed and entertained lavishly, gambled excessively, abandoned his wife frequently, and was quick to resort to swordplay when he felt his honour was at stake. Yet, he was also an active Member of Parliament and a respected soldier, who learnt his trade on the Continent during the Dutch Wars, and put his expertise to good use in support of the royalist cause during the English Civil War. In this, the first modern biography of Goring, the main events of his life are interwoven with the wider history of his age. Beginning with his family background in Sussex, it charts his successes at court and exploits in the service of the Dutch, culminating in his experiences at the siege of Breda in 1637, and his role in the Bishops' Wars. However, it is his key role as a royalist general during the Civil War that is the major focus of this book, which concludes with Goring's years of exile during the Republic. This fascinating and illuminating account of Goring's life, character and actions, provides not only a fresh examination of this contentious figure, but also reveals much about English society and culture in the first half of the seventeenth century.

Book Synopsis The World of the Tavern by : Beat Kümin
Download or read book The World of the Tavern written by Beat Kümin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of drink received a great deal of attention from early modern Europeans. Preachers, physicians, authorities, artists and travellers all addressed it from a range of different perspectives. At the same time, inns, taverns and alehouses served as multifunctional centres in towns and villages throughout Europe. This combination resulted in a wealth of sources, both institutional and cultural, which are only now beginning to be explored. This anthology features new research on public houses in England, Russia and the German lands. In a series of general, thematic and regional studies, contributors engage with broader debates in early modern history, shedding light on such key issues as consumption, travel and communication, state building, confessional identity, fiscal practice, gender and household relations, and the use of public spaces. The result is a volume that should appeal to anybody with an interest in early modern cultural history.

Book Synopsis A Village in Sussex by : Charles Cooper
Download or read book A Village in Sussex written by Charles Cooper and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2006-02-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the heart of Sussex, below the South Downs Way, lies Kingston-near-Lewes, dominated by downlands and surrounded by vast sweeping fields. How has its medieval past shaped the borders and boundaries of its present? How did the village adapt as its institutions, organisation and technology developed with time? In this beautifully written history, Charles Cooper explores the development of the village from the time of the Norman Conquest to the end of the nineteenth century. This is a fascinating micro-history of a place that mirrors many of the changes taking place in wider England. Cooper charts the transformation of the village under its Norman overlords, the rise of yeomen and gentlemen in the sixteenth century, and the final ascendancy of the Goring family of Wiston, who by the nineteenth century had become the dominant landowners in the area. He brings the people of the village alive through the ages in a fascinating blend of economic and cultural history, uncovering the lives of ordinary men and women as well as those of priests, gentlemen and peers. "A Village in Sussex" is a masterly entry point into the history of rural England and the life of one of its most attractively situated villages.
