Book excerpt: Dive into the Profound Wisdom of Thirukkural: A Guide to Virtue, Wealth, and Love Thirukkural, also known as the Kural, is a classic Tamil text revered for its insightful verses on ethics, morality, and practical living. This ancient literary gem, composed of 1,330 couplets, offers timeless wisdom that continues to resonate with readers across cultures and generations. Unveiling the Three Books of Thirukkural: The work is divided into three distinct sections, each exploring a fundamental aspect of human experience: Aram (Virtue): This first book lays the foundation for a good life. It emphasizes virtues like righteousness, compassion, truthfulness, and self-control. Chapters delve into concepts like the importance of rain, the role of asceticism, and the qualities of a just king. Porul (Wealth): The second book focuses on the pursuit of wealth and success in a righteous manner. It offers guidance on various aspects like agriculture, governance, and the importance of wise counsel. Inbam (Love): The final book explores the realm of love and relationships. It delves into the importance of a happy marriage, cultivating genuine friendships, and the value of knowledge. Exploring the Depths of Virtue in the First Book: The opening chapters of Thirukkural establish the significance of virtue as the cornerstone of a meaningful life. They explore the concept of aram, emphasizing its connection to inner peace, social harmony, and a life well-lived. Chapter 1: Virtue (Aram): This foundational chapter sets the stage for the entire work. It highlights the importance of living virtuously and explores the qualities that contribute to a good character. Chapter 2: Rain (Mazhai): Moving beyond individual virtue, this chapter emphasizes the importance of rain for sustaining life and the interconnectedness of nature. Chapter 3: Asceticism (Thuravu): This chapter delves into the concept of renouncing worldly possessions and explores the potential benefits of an ascetic lifestyle. Chapter 4: Kingship (Arasiyal): Shifting focus to societal well-being, this chapter explores the qualities of a good king and the principles of just and effective governance. Chapter 5: Ministers (Amaichar): Recognizing the importance of wise counsel, this chapter highlights the crucial role of capable ministers in supporting a good king. Chapter 6: Agriculture (Vivasaayam): Emphasizing the foundation of a prosperous society, this chapter explores the importance of agriculture and the role of farmers. Chapter 7: Married Life (Kappiyal): Moving to personal relationships, this chapter explores the duties, expectations, and ideals of a happy and fulfilling marriage. Chapter 8: Chastity (Karpu): Reflecting the social norms of its time, this chapter focuses on the concept of fidelity within marriage, particularly emphasizing societal expectations placed upon women. Chapter 9: Friendship (Natpu): Celebrating the importance of genuine connection, this chapter explores the qualities of a true friend and the importance of maintaining healthy friendships. Chapter 10: Knowledge (Arivu): Concluding the first part of Thirukkural, this chapter emphasizes the importance of acquiring and applying knowledge for a fulfilling life. Embark on a Journey of Self-Discovery with Thirukkural: Whether you're seeking guidance on living a virtuous life, navigating relationships, or achieving success, Thirukkural offers valuable insights that transcend time and culture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thiruvalluvar, the author of the Tamil treatise Thirukkural is considered to have lived sometime between 3rd century BC and 1st century AD. Thirukkural perhaps was a fitting reply to a host of conflicting and competing views that existed in Tamil speaking countries of the period on the right way of living, family, religion and governance, supported by various religions that reached the Tamil soil as well as those of indigenous ones and by philosophers who accompanied traders from far off countries. But unfortunately Thiruvalluvar himself did not give interpretation to his tersest couplets. The interpretations presented in 13nth century and earlier, in spite of the noble intention and extraordinary scholarship of the interpreters, I am afraid, understated its universality. Several centuries later, claims and counterclaims were made by the proponents of different religions including Christianity and the latest from atheists. I tried to remove the guise and achieved considerable success in this attempt. Fresh interpretations, which I believe truthfully reflect the thought of Thiruvalluvar, are provided in this book for nearly 360 couplets out of 1330 couplets. This conviction stems from my fresh look at Thirukkural that successfully shed away all the contradictions and unacceptable and unviable constructs it had to live with through the earlier interpretation(s). Thirukkural consists of 133 chapters with 10 couplets in each chapter. Each chapter is a life skill coaching material. They show how to live a soul-evolving life in the three arenas namely family, work and love. A soul which achieves full evolvement through numerous reincarnations reaches puthezhir ulagam (celestial abode). Thank you for buying this book. Contact me if you may at [email protected].

Book excerpt: Though management as a practice is very old, as a subject it has evolved in a big way only in the last fifty years. Today, there are a number of management gurus who have extensively studied this subject and evolved a number of theories relating to it. However, we do not find many ancient books that have codified thoughts pertaining to management. The Thirukural is an exception, despite being two thousand years old. Considered the Tamil Veda, the Thirukural is a treatise on the art of living. Its eternal and universal appeal lies in its secular character, clarity of thought, depth of understanding and penetrating insights into the fundamentals of human thought and behaviour. In this book, the author gives examples from his varied global experiences and explains how he has drawn inspiration from the Thirukural to deal with everyday business situations. In what is a fascinating analysis, the author also shows how the thoughts of contemporary management gurus compare with the timeless wisdom contained in the Thirukural. The book is an indispensable guide for managers, corporate executives, entrepreneurs, students of management and those who aspire to be leaders.

Book excerpt: A celebrated work by the greatest poet of classical Tamil literature Tiruvalluvar probably lived and wrote between the second century BC and the eighth century AD though his dates have not been conclusively established. The work by which he is known, the Kural, comprises 1,330 couplets and is divided into three sections—Virtue, Wealth and Love—and is based on the first three of the four supreme aims prescribed by Hindu tradition: dharma (virtue), artha (wealth), kama (love) and moksha (salvation). Taken together, the three books of the Kural inform, criticize and teach the reader, in brilliantly styled and pithy verse, about life, love and the ways of the world. Translated and edited with an introduction by P.S. Sundaram

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirukkural is a life science scripture. It describes the three essentials of life. Viz dharma, artha and kama. Or righteousness, wealth and bliss. For some reason the fourth purushartha - moksham [salvation] is not described.13 sections discuss about renunciation - but here also the salvation is not directly discussed. One section discusses fate or destiny -- the power of the inescapable happenings.Justice Gokulakrishnan feels that if one follows the ideals of dharma enunciated one can obtain moksham, and therefore it was not written. Some feel he has not written about moksham as he has no personal knowledge about it. Also it is very difficult to explain it to others - as words are not enough to express the personal bliss. In tamil there is a couplet " kandavar vindilar, vindavar kandilar" - meaning " those who have seen have not returned, those who have returned have not seen"The people who have experienced the brahmananda are in a different plane; and cannot return to the worldly plane. They were completely transformed. Those who have returned to this worldly plane have not experienced bliss.
