Book excerpt: Fran Berkell-Rafferty was in college when she first saw the quote by Dag Hammarskjold, “If only I may grow: firmer, simpler, quieter, warmer.” Throughout the next four decades while busy pursuing degrees, marrying, and raising a family, she would often pause and question whether she was growing in direction of that mantra. In a collection of philosophical musings based on her personal experiences, Berkell-Rafferty reflects on her determination to grow firmer, simpler, quieter, and warmer as she aged while helping others to see how the simplest offerings of nature’s bounty can connect us to understanding the absolute complexities that we face day-to-day. Throughout her gems of hard-earned wisdom and observations of the natural world around her, she invites others to refill their spiritual wells and reflect on their own remarkable journey through life. A Seeker’s Journey shares thoughtful writings and wisdom that encourage those in search of inner peace to seek light from the darkness to grow firmer, simpler, quieter, and warmer.

This kit is a Tarot classic, combining inspiring, luminous illustrations that make the symbolism of the cards easy to grasp with a guidebook that clarifies the mysteries and symbolism of the Tarot and encourages users as they embark on their own journey of self-discovery with the cards. Author David Fontana's twin perspectives as Tarot expert and psychologist make this deck the most accessible and useful on the market. A highly respected psychologist with an abiding interest in the connection between symbols and the deeper levels of the unconscious, he was captivated by the way in which the Tarot communicates through universal visual symbolism. In the guidebook, he explains how focusing on Tarot symbols can provide us with keys to the vast amount of instinctive patterns of thought and behaviour that is normally inaccessible to our conscious minds, but which determines much of who we are and what we can become. Thus, accessing our unconscious through the Tarot can play a crucial role in our psychological and spiritual development. The kit contains: * The 22 Major Arcana cards and 56 Minor Arcana cards * An 80pp guidebook that gives insight into the history, symbolism and psychology of the Tarot, explains how to integrate the Tarot into your own life for self-discovery and positive change, and provides traditional layouts to guide you in your journey

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirituality is distinct from religion. Religion is a collective concept designed to ensure peaceful co-existence of the community as a whole. Religion, thus, is very much focused on the life in the physical world with only a peripheral regard to after-life, basically as a carrot/stick to control individual behaviour.Spirituality, on the contrary, is an individual pursuit, an inward journey towards self discovery or self-realization. It is a recognition of the impermanence and unimportance of the physical world and a recognition of the real and the eternal phenomenon that is before and after the physical creation, the spirit. It, therefore, goes without saying that spiritual pursuit has nothing to do with organised religions as they exist today. The ultimate aim of spiritual pursuit is liberation from the repeated cycles of birth and death and it cannot be achieved until one truly believes that one has had enough of this physical world founded on duality. Spiritual pursuit consists of a fundamental transformation of the seeker's attitude towards life in this world. It entails gradual and progressive reduction of one's interest in the physical world so that the mental space so vacated can be taken over by the spirit. This book presents the various facets of the above core philosophy. It advocates a spiritual pursuit which is practical as regards its adoption by an ordinary seeker who may still be a common householder. It puts across the typical Indian traditional non-dual spiritual philosophy. It starts with the non-dual theory of creation and explains the author's understanding of the concept of god too in that context. The other key concepts that are explained in the book are as follows –• Mind is simply a software program designed to give the embodied soul a fulfilling experience of this duality-based creation.• Desires are essential for a full experience of the fascinating play of duality during the first half of one's life in this physical world. However, in the second half, one should gradually withdraw his mind from the worldly life so that he can be prepared to leave this world in peace, not wanting to return in another life of more of the same thing.• The theory of karma with the core concept of doing your duty but not being attached to the fruit of it.• Pain (physical and egoic) is an essential part of the duality that this physical world is founded on. It is the non-acceptance of this reality that causes suffering.• A guru as a spiritual guide is of great help to a sincere spiritual seeker. However, a guru need not be sought because then one may land up with phony gurus. If a seeker sincerely pursues some suitable spiritual practice, a real guru will find him and guide him.• Accepting the tremendous variety in the creation without being judgmental.• A spiritual seeker should aim at a true feeling that he has nothing more to get from the world. He then lives totally in the present moment.• Faith is a critical pre-requisite for a sustained spiritual pursuit. Without strong faith, a seeker is very likely to give up his spiritual pursuit, especially if he expects some worldly benefit from his spiritual pursuit that often may not accrue.• Living in awareness of what human life is all about in a spiritual sense and not a mechanical living driven by worldly conditioning is an essential part of the spiritual pursuit.• Thoughtless state is a natural outcome of spiritual maturity and not an aim of meditation. Meditation is simply a way of letting the mind play itself out gradually while observing its games in a detached manner.• We see a dream and experience everything in the dream as if it is “real”. But when we wake up, everything simple vanishes. Similarly, our “real” life may be just a dream of the Creator. So do not take this life seriously!

Book excerpt: “In this extraordinary meditation, Eva Brann takes us to the fierce core of Heraclitus's vision and shows us the music of his language. The thought and beautiful prose in The Logos of Heraclitus are a delight.”—Barry Mazur, Harvard University “An engaged solitary, an inward-turned observer of the world, inventor of the first of philosophical genres, the thought-compacted aphorism,” “teasingly obscure in reputation, but hard-hittingly clear in fact,” “now tersely mordant, now generously humane.” Thus Eva Brann introduces Heraclitus—in her view, the West’s first philosopher. The collected work of Heraclitus comprises 131 passages. Eva Brann sets out to understand Heraclitus as he is found in these passages and particularly in his key word, Logos, the order that is the cosmos. “Whoever is captivated by the revelatory riddlings and brilliant obscurities of what remains of Heraclitus has to begin anew—accepting help, to be sure, from previous readings—in a spirit of receptivity and reserve. But essentially everyone must pester the supposed obscurantist until he opens up. Heraclitus is no less and no more pregnantly dark than an oracle…The upshot is that no interpretation has prevailed; every question is wide open.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yogavasistha or Yogavasistha Maharamayana has been a guide book to earnest Sadhakas, all over the country. The popularity of this book appears to be due to the fact, that it is a happy combination of terse Upanisadic thought clothed in the story form. A scripture becomes relevant, when it gives the truths of the Upanisads, using a common man's language with illustrative stories, helps a beginner as well as an advanced seeker. It is believed by some that Sage Valmiki wrote the Ramayana for the purification of mind and to create a mood of seeking in the society. It is well known, that the story of Sri Rama, gives an exemplary ethical and moral behaviour in an individual, and a glimpse into the ideal culture, through the description of Ayodhya. For only on a strong ethical and moral foundation can one hope to build the super-structure of spirituality. Attempt has been made to cover all the stories in six Prakaranas. This book is a study by a seeker, and an attempt to present the philosophy, and practical hints contained in the book, to fellow seekers who are not very familiar with Sanskrit. It is essentially meant for inspiring the seekers to take up the study of the original text, which is a mine of practical wisdom. The essays contained herein, are glimpses into the meditations on the golden verses and their connection and relevance in our day-to-day life. Consequently, the interpretation and the perspective is not really meant for scholastic pursuits.

Book excerpt: Researching Thoreau’s life, a grad student finds danger, dark secrets, and something haunting Walden Pond in this supernatural thriller. When graduate student Aine Cahill uncovers a journal proving that her aunt Bonnie was an intimate companion of Thoreau’s during his supposedly solitary sojourn at Walden Pond, she knows that she has found the perfect subject for her dissertation. She decides to travel to Walden Pond herself to hunker down and work on her writing, but it quickly becomes clear that all is not as it seems in Thoreau’s woodland retreat. The further Aine delves into Bonnie’s diary the more she finds herself wondering about her family’s sinister legacy and even her own sanity—is there really a young girl lurking in the woods? As tragedy strikes a nearby town and suspicion falls on Aine, she scrambles to find the truth behind Thoreau’s paradise.

Book excerpt: There lies an astounding spiritual depth in the teachings of the Sufi Mystics. The Sufi Mysticism consists in endeavoring to reconcile the doctrines of all religions of the world through the philosophy of love. This piece of art is founded upon the teachings of the Sufi Mystics. The current problem of terrorism, in the name of Jihad, has blighted the lives of many people. This book will reveal the true meaning of Jihad, as the doctrine of Sufism accentuated on inner Jihad, which means the closing of one's heart to the inner enemies of retaliation, envy and infidelity. This book also covers the foremost topics like the mystery of love, the status of women in Sufism, science of transformation, management lessons in Sufism, relevance of the Spiritual Master, controlling the Nafs and, most significantly, the Fifteen Fundamentals of life. The book covers the teachings of Persian Mystic "Jalaluddin Muhammad Rumi" (in the world of Sufis, Rumi is the Emperor) and many other Sufi Mystics from the past. This book is a gift, an experience of the divine and therefore; it is recommended to be read periodically to reinforce the key messages of the Sufi Mystics in one's life. Remember, the path of spirituality is not easy for those who seek temporary happiness. It is a journey of hardship, and one must keep an enormous amount of patience and blind faith in the master's teachings to pursue permanent peace and happiness. Note: The author makes no claim to being either an Islamic Scholar or a Spiritual Master. The author is merely a seeker of love through the teachings of the Sufi Mystics.
