This is sometimes referred to as a mission statement or company vision. It's essentially the company's operational blueprint. The business philosophy explains the company's overall goals and its purpose. It's important to remember you're playing a long game, and that even when you want to give up, if you push yourself just a little harder, you'll achieve incredible results. Book excerpt: The founder of Four Seasons Hotels shares the philosophy and values that have made his legendary brand How did a child of immigrants, starting with no background in the hotel business, create the world's most admired and successful hotel chain? And how has Four Seasons grown dramatically, over nearly a half century, without losing its focus on exceptional quality and unparalleled service? Isadore Sharp answers these questions in his engaging memoir, which doubles as a powerful guide for leaders in any field. He recalls the surprising history of his company, starting with its roots in his father's small construction business, which Sharp joined after getting a degree in architecture. Shifting into hotels wasn't easy, and he learned by trial and error. His breakthrough was a vision for a new kind of hotel, featuring superior design, top-quality amenities, and, above all, a deep commitment to service. Sharp realized that customers would gladly pay extra for a "home away from home" experience. But that would be possible only if everyone-from managers and supervisors to bellmen, servers, and housekeepers-was fully engaged. The front-line staff, who have the most contact with guests, can make or break a five-star reputation. Readers will be fascinated to learn how Four Seasons does it, year after year, in more than thirty countries around the world.

Book excerpt: Olivofonics (Oh-Lee-Vo-Fawn-Ecks) Small Business Management & Philosophy for Beginners. Small business management is nothing more than philosophies. It covers business ethics, business reality, marketing philosophies, logic, and much more. As individuals, the only thing that we own is our beliefs. If you believe something to be true, you consider it to be your knowledge. If, however, you don't believe something to be true, you have very little knowledge of it. So knowledge is power, but only if you believe it to be true. If one side of the coin says, "Man has no guarantees in life," then it's safe to assume that the opposite side of the coin guarantees man one thing, "No individual can live forever." Yet, people flip the coin every day. Even though I cannot offer you any guarantees, we already have our guarantee. Let me say that if you believe the philosophies in this book, then my philosophies will become your knowledge. If, however, you don't believe the philosophies in this book, you'll have very little knowledge of small business management. Regards, Frank.

Book excerpt: Ken Blanchard’s Leading at a Higher Level techniques are inspiring thousands of leaders to build high-performing organizations that make life better for everyone. Now, in Helping People Win at Work, Blanchard and WD-40 Company leader Garry Ridge reveal how WD-40 has used Blanchard’s techniques of Partnering for Performance with every employee--achieving levels of engagement and commitment that have fortified the bottom line. Ridge introduces WD-40 Company’s year-round performance review system, explaining its goals, features, and the cultural changes it requires. Next, he shares his leadership point of view: what he expects of people, what they can expect of him, and where his beliefs about leadership and motivation come from. Finally, Blanchard explains why WD-40 Company’s Partnering for Performance system works so well--and how to leverage its high-value techniques in your organization. In this book, you’ll learn how to: · Stop building failure into your mentoring of employees · Set goals using the SMART approach: specific, motivational, attainable, relevant and trackable · Help people move through all four stages of mastery · Create a culture that shares knowledge and encourages nonstop learning “I’m thrilled that the first book in our Leading at a Higher Level series is with Garry Ridge, president of WD-40 Company. For years I’ve been concerned about how people’s performance is evaluated. People are often forced into a normal distribution curve, or even worse, rank ordered. Not only does this not build trust, it also does not hold managers responsible for coaching people and helping them win. The manager’s responsibility is focused on sorting people out. When I was a college professor, I always gave my students the final exam at the beginning of the course and spent the rest of the semester helping them answer the questions so that they could get an A. Life is all about getting As, not some stupid normal distribution curve. Garry Ridge got this, and wow! What a difference it has made in WD-40 Company’s performance.” --Ken Blanchard “When I first heard Ken talk about giving his final exam at the beginning of the course and then teaching students the answers so they could get an A, it blew me away. Why don’t we do that in business? So that’s exactly what I did at WD-40 Company when we set up our ‘Don’t Mark My Paper, Help Me Get an A’ performance management system. Has it made a difference? You’d better believe it. Ever since we began the system, our company’s annual sales have more than tripled, from $100 million to more than $339 million. And we’ve accomplished this feat while making the company a great place to work.” --Garry Ridge

This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a selection of articles with focus on the theoretical foundations of business ethics, and in particular on the philosophy of management and on human rights and business. This implies identifying and discussing conflicts as well as agreement with regard to the philosophical and other foundations of business and management. Despite the general interest in corporate social responsibility and business ethics, the contemporary discussion rarely touches upon the normative core and philosophical foundations of business. There is a need to discuss the theoretical basis of business ethics and of business and human rights. Even though the actions and activities of business may be discussed from a moral perspective, not least in the media, the judgments and opinions relating to business and management often lack deeper moral reflection and consistency. Partly for this reason, business ethicists are constantly challenged to provide such moral and philosophical foundations for business ethics and for business and human rights, and to communicate them in an understandable manner. Such a challenge is also of scientific kind. Positions and opinions in the academic field need to be substantiated by thorough moral and theoretical reflection to underpin normative approaches. Far too often, business ethicists may agree on matters, which they approach from different and sometimes irreconcilable philosophical standpoints, resulting in superficial agreement but deeper-lying disagreement. In other cases, it may be of high relevance to identify philosophical standpoints that despite conflicting fundamentals may arrive at conclusions acceptable to everyone.

Book excerpt: Canada’s most engaging banker shares his strategies for operating in a radically different way in our ever-changing business world. Nothing is average or normal at Tangerine (formerly ING Direct)—not the name, not the style of banking, not the leadership. And Peter Aceto is not your average executive. The president and CEO of Tangerine runs his business in an unorthodox and intuitively human way. The bank has no tellers, no lineups, no bricks-and-mortar branches for its customers to visit. But people are at the core of the operation: loyal, happy and engaged employees who help thousands of customers save their money, buy homes and enjoy a healthy financial life. Weology provides an in-depth look into the “people-first” leadership strategies that have made Tangerine Canada’s leading direct bank, with more than 1.9 million clients and close to $40 billion in total assets. As the company’s guiding hand for more than six years, Aceto thrives in his role by relying strongly on transparency, trust and accessibility. He doesn’t have a luxurious corner office (instead, he sits among the other employees), and he often responds to calls and emails from customers directly. Aceto’s relentless focus is on driving a type of radical thinking that delivers superior and unparalleled results for Tangerine and the financial well-being of Canadians, and that demonstrates largely how business will be led in the future. In Weology, Aceto shares many stories that show how his philosophy and strategies have made him and his business so successful.
