Book excerpt: On the Wings of a Dove, sub-titled, Grandmother Tales is a charming little children's book beautifully illustrated and elegantly written. This enchanting collection of folk tales from South India is based on South Indian oral tradition, passed down from generation to generation, by word of mouth and told to the author when he was a young boy by his mother.. On the Wings of a Dove is inspired by the Eastern tradition of story telling and written for the enjoyment of children all over the world. The refreshing descriptions of nature: woodlands, meadows, animals, birds and insects are designed to bring children closer to nature and to make them appreciative of things around them that are unique in color and design. In the first story, the author tells the tale of two dove sisters, Kutty and Kuttathy who lived in the beautiful dove kingdom, Kanaka Puri. The bond between them is a perfect example of sisterly love. Unfortunately, an action in a hurry without foresight, severed the bond of love and affection and plunged the sisters into sorrow. The Firefly imagines the geneses of one of nature's simple wonders, one that has fascinated children through the ages. The story is replete with an original FIREFLY song. Manu the Wicked Fisherman is an unforgettable story about the struggle between good and evil, and how good triumphs. The last story, The Village School Teacher is a light and hilarious and will help the children close the book with a happy smile.

Book excerpt: By the Wing of a Dove is poetry written and illustrated by Kristian Brockmann, with a brief introduction explaining the background to the poems within. On a beautiful spring day in mid-October, he released two heavenly doves on the Balmain peninsula overlooking Sydney Harbour. This was mainly in recognition of Sri Lankan colleagues he had met through work as an Engineer. Colleagues both Sinhalese and Tamil were recent migrants to Australia, as are many Australians, and the doves symbolise the end of the civil confl ict in Sri Lanka in 2009. The poetry is much more than just a symbol of peace though. Dedicated to family and friends, part one was written in hospital recovering from a diffi cult illness. He recovered in 2008 in the Hunter Valley with family support. The second part of the poetry is compiled from various other times in his life. Each of the poems is illustrated with a photograph from places around Australia and from a holiday in Europe in 2004. Following his recovery, he worked in Sydney for several years before returning to the Hunter Valley where he currently resides, writing poetry in his spare time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry James criticized the impressionism that was revolutionizing French painting and fiction. He satirized the British aesthetic movement whose keystone was impressionist criticism. So why, time and again in important parts of his literary work, did James use the word 'impression'? Henry James and the Art of Impressions argues that James tried to wrest the impression from the impressionists and to recast it in his own art of the novel. Interdisciplinary in its range, philosophical and literary in its focus, the book shows the place of James's work within the wider cultural history of impressionism. It draws on painting, philosophy, psychology, literature, and critical theory to examine James's art criticism, early literary criticism, travel writing, reflections on his own fiction, and the three great novels of his major phase, The Ambassadors, The Wings of the Dove, and The Golden Bowl. It shows how the language of impressions enables James to represent the most intense moments of consciousness of his characters. It argues that the Jamesian impression is best understood as a family of related ideas bound together by James's attempt to reconcile the novel's value as a mimetic form with its value as a transformative creative activity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what Jesus saw, heard, and did during his so-called “silent years” between his birth in Bethlehem, after his trip to Egypt, and before his baptism at the Jordan River? The only mentioned event in the Gospels from that time frame was being forgotten in Jerusalem by his parents at the age of twelve, as recorded by Luke. Barry Blackstone takes you on an imaginative journey, an inspiring jaunt into those days of Jesus as he remembers his own boyhood and early childhood experiences in the tiny farming village of Perham, Maine, a hamlet similar in size and nature to the Nazareth of Jesus’ day. After visiting an archeological site in Nazareth in 2010, Blackstone realized the parallels between his obscure upbringing and the quiet years of the Savior in his boyhood home. It is the wish of the author that his reader might see through a morning dew, a blossoming flower, a blue sky, a gentle rain, a brilliant rainbow, a crowing rooster, a loving sister, and a father’s carpenter’s shop into the life of the boy Jesus. Blackstone attempts to fill in some of the gaps in the story of Jesus by sharing his barnyard memories with an application to the teaching of the adult Jesus. Can one see insights into what Jesus experienced in the lessons, parables, and teachings of his adult ministry?

Book excerpt: After reading "Walking Through The Watermelon Patch", it is my hope that you were able to find comfort in the poetic stories, a warm remembrance of past loves, a dream of new love, a hope for solutions to some problem you may have, a laugh at a quirky poem or just plain found enjoyment in the words. By no means should this book be taken as gospel to life's situations, but rather an outward, inward look at oneself, sparking the ability to decipher what is best for one's needs at that very moment. The Note Pages are for things and ideas you may want to remember, to contemplate or to question at a later time. The Thought Pages are for your reflections and visions, aspirations to be consulted at a later time. These are the wishes, hopes and dreams for a better you. If by some reason you happen to start with this summary it is the place where you are to be at that moment. "Watermelon Patch" has no index, just open the book and start to read. It is the moment of time and need of purpose where you the reader have been guided. Finally, pass along this "journal" of You (wisdom, attitude, guidance) to someone special; children, grandchildren, it is a wonderful legacy for those who shall follow in your footsteps. It may be a perfect opportunity to "impart and share knowledge that sometimes does not want to be heard!"

Book excerpt: Henry James (1843-1916) has been championed as an historian of social conscience and attacked as a spokesman for social privilege. His Americanness has been questioned by nativists and defended by Brahmins. Critics took issue with his lucidly complex style. "It's not that he bites off more than he can chew, but that he chews more than he bites off," a contemporary complained. Although he was an acknowledged master in his final years, James' narrow readership has dwindled in the century since his death. This book examines allusions, sources and affinities in James' vast body of work to interpret his literary intentions. Chapters provide close analysis of Daisy Miller, The American, The Beast in the Jungle and The Wings of the Dove. His fascination with poet Robert Browning is discussed, along with his complicated relationship with Marian "Clover" Adams and her husband, Henry, who was the author of The Education of Henry Adams.
