Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book described vibration reduction for flexible structures by the command smoothing techniques. The Command smoothing technique is a kind of open-loop controller. The operator's commands filter through a piecewise continuous function, called smoother, to produce smoothed commands. Smoothed commands move flexible dynamic systems toward desired positions with minimal oscillations. Five types of command smoother were reported including one-piece, two-pieces, three-pieces, and four-pieces smoothers, and the smoother for multi-mode Duffing oscillators. All smoothers are robust to changes in the system parameters and working conditions. The command smoothing technique has been successfully applied to industrial cranes, sloshing suppression, flexible manipulators, high-speed cam and follower systems, and helicopter slung loads.

Book excerpt: This open access book addresses the current technical problems of low efficiency of emergency site information collection, lack of flexibility of emergency information interaction, lack of fusion analysis technology and disaster loss prediction model, and low intelligence of emergency auxiliary decision making. The content contains research on multiple information collection technology of power grid disaster loss, fusion analysis and prediction technology of power grid disaster loss information, and real-time information interaction technology between emergency site and command center in this work. This book illustrates the process of developing a prototype system for grid disaster perception and emergency command, which realizes the functions of grid disaster perception and emergency auxiliary decision-making and visualization command. The prototype intelligent perception and emergency command system for power grid disasters has been piloted in several units. It provided support for disaster loss prediction, disaster damage perception, and emergency command auxiliary decision-making in the earthquake in Sichuan, China, as well as the heavy rainfall in Zhejiang, China and Typhoon No. 9 "Lupi" that registered in Fujian, China, which significantly improved the emergency disposal Work efficiency.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1966. Professor Rescher’s aim is to develop a "logic of commands" in exactly the same general way which standard logic has already developed a "logic of truth-functional statement compounds" or a "logic of quantifiers". The object is to present a tolerably accurate and precise account of the logically relevant facets of a command, to study the nature of "inference" in reasonings involving commands, and above all to establish a viable concept of validity in command inference, so that the logical relationships among commands can be studied with something of the rigour to which one is accustomed in other branches of logic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The storys time frame is set in the late 1700s, nearing the end of the regions Spanish monopoly on trade with increased competition for dominance among France, England and the Dutch. The time was wrought with complex and multiple world conflicts among the various and dominant world powers of the time. The American colonists had declared their independence from England. In support, and for self interests, other countries including Spain (with troops and supplies from Cuba and Puerto Rico) and France provided aid and logistics to the American colonists in their fight for independence. The political and economic strife in France had positioned it for upheaval and revolution. The Spanish monarchy had declared the Americas to be free and open to trade by all nations and the Caribbean Sea as well as the Atlantic sea routes had become a competitive arena among the major world powers of the time striving for dominance and economic opportunity. The story is presented in third person narrative form as it was the authors intent to also incorporate historical facts of the time into the sequence of events, and sailors in particular may empathize as it utilizes many nautical terms and tactics in depicting many of the events at sea. In light of such, the various nautical terms and maneuvers that are introduced throughout are clarified in the appendices as an aid to readers not familiar with the tactics of sailing. It is the authors hope that sailors and non sailors alike will find the incorporation of historical facts of the era with plausible fictional events a pleasant reading experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this grand history of naval warfare, Palmer observes five centuries of dramatic encounters under sail and steam. From reliance on signal flags in the seventeenth century to satellite communications in the twenty-first, admirals looked to the next advance in technology as the one that would allow them to control their forces. But while abilities to communicate improved, Palmer shows how other technologies simultaneously shrank admirals' windows of decision. The result was simple, if not obvious: naval commanders have never had sufficient means or time to direct subordinates in battle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of The Commands of Jesus presents a companion volume exploring 120 commands from the New Testament’s epistles and apostolic writings. Most studies of the epistles of the New Testament emphasize theology. In The Commands of the Apostles, noted devotional author Michael Phillips instead puts the focus of the practical commands of the Apostolic writers—and how we might follow them in our daily lives. Considering the important command found in Hebrews 6 1 2—“Let us go on to maturity”—Phillips suggests that spiritual maturity requires nothing more or less that attaining Christlikeness through obedience to commands. He therefore asks readers to put elementary doctrines aside and focus instead on the commands we as Christians are called upon to obey.
