Book excerpt: Fiction. Spanning two decades, BREATH LIKE THE WIND AT DAWN tells the epic story of the Tamplin family of outlaw-twins Quinn and Irving; their brother Edward, who is on the run from a dark past; and their mother Annora, who has been left to defend their haunted Minnesota homestead. Yet at the center of the novel is Les, patriarch of the Tamplins, Civil War veteran, and sheriff of Utica, who is possessed by an indelible lust to strangle his victims. Only when the brothers set about to rob Utica's bank will the family at last converge in an unforgettable finale when blood will be met with blood. Combining the multi-perspective family drama of As I Lay Dying with the violent lyricism of Blood Meridian, BREATH LIKE THE WIND AT DAWN brings a brave new voice to American fiction.

Download or read book Portrait of Elgar written by Michael Kennedy and published by London ; New York, [etc.] : Oxford U.P.. This book was released on 1968 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public image of Elgar as patriotic country squire was established in his lifetime, but, in reality, it concealed a highly complex, sometimes baffling, private individual. Although acquaintances found him a man of endless curiosity and good humour, his family and close friends knew him to be rather different: a prey to despair, neurotically mistrustful both of himself and of those who loved him and so damaged by the condescension and neglect of his early years that emotionally he never recovered. This is a reissue of the third edition of Michael Kenedy's portrait of this complexman - not an analytical survey of the music but a faithful likeness of the composer, recognizable, but at the same time a thoroughly individual interpretation of the subject.

Download or read book Command at Dawn written by Mel Carney and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: June 1, 1968, Vietnam -- Bravo company was on a mountaintop, two kilometers from Laos. At 1430 hours, mortar rounds moved across their perimeter like the wind. Twenty rounds into the attack, Lt. Scott Ledbetter ran to the command post. The carnage stopped him cold. The commander and several others were lying wounded on the ground and the forward observer was sitting dead against a stone wall. With mortar rounds exploding around him, he started calling in artillery. After thirty rounds, the mortars stopped and small arms probes began. Knowing an attack was imminent, he pounded the enemy with rounds long into the night. In the morning, the new commanding officer Scott walked forty-four men off the mountain and into the rest of the war. The attack cost five men their lives. Twenty-seven were wounded and medevac'd. In eighteen months, Scott had gone from a civilian in a strife-torn America to a battle-hardened infantry commander. Upon his return, he found that soldiers were hated and to stay sane, he started to write. Command at Dawn is the product of that writing.
