Book excerpt: Book Excerpt: ...denly, the reality with which we have supposed them endowed, and although we may still bravely believe we find ourselves crying out passionately for help in our unbelief. There certainly are the verities; not one of them can possibly fall to the ground; yet these very verities are never quite in our experience.Still the world has its thoroughly confident people. Every one of us has met some of those estimable beings to whom doubt seems wholly foreign, people who assert with trembling voice and sacred vow that their convictions, political perhaps or religious, are unassailable, and that they must hold them to the grave. But, whatever may be said of political convictions, religious convictions have often been [p.009] regarded as a contradiction of terms. How can one be sure and religious at the same time? Moreover, positive people under any standard are notoriously as fearful as they are dogmatic. Fear is often, if not always, the chief motive of dogmatism, and fear is hardly the most natural companion...

Book excerpt: Doubt is a habit. You aren't born a doubter. You learn to doubt over time, after being hit with the injustices and instability of this world. In this book, I'm going to try to help you go back in time?and regain what you lost. The wonder of faith is a pure thing-a childlike thing-and it's the only thing that works to access God and draw in what you really want. He doesn't respond to need. He doesn't respond to begging or pleading or wishing. God responds to faith. Doubt has roots. From the beginning of my walk with God in 1974, I decided that if I was going to be a "believer," then I was going to believe. I had a lifetime of doubting people behind me-but I learned in the Bible that God is not a man that He should lie. I also learned that the roots of doubt must be pulled up in order to make way to receive from God. I began a new way of thinking all those years ago that I am still using today. It's brought me joy. It's brought me success over the many challenges I've had. And it's brought me great favor and full peace in a world filled with trouble. Doubt isn't what you think. It's not a passing thought. It's not pondering the Word of God or reasoning with God, or even with others. Doubt is an inner-lifestyle choice-a bad habit of taking your own word over God's, your thoughts over God's, and putting more stock in the words of others over God's, too. That's not what living a successful life as a believer is all about! In this book, I hope to help you shut doubt down and develop a mindset that sees God's truth as bigger than the doubts of the mind?or anything else. Develop a habit of never learning to doubt!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have long acknowledged a deep connection between evangelical religion and democracy in the early days of the republic. This is a widely accepted narrative that is maintained as a matter of fact and tradition—and in spite of evangelicalism’s more authoritarian and reactionary aspects. In Conceived in Doubt, Amanda Porterfield challenges this standard interpretation of evangelicalism’s relation to democracy and describes the intertwined relationship between religion and partisan politics that emerged in the formative era of the early republic. In the 1790s, religious doubt became common in the young republic as the culture shifted from mere skepticism toward darker expressions of suspicion and fear. But by the end of that decade, Porterfield shows, economic instability, disruption of traditional forms of community, rampant ambition, and greed for land worked to undermine heady optimism about American political and religious independence. Evangelicals managed and manipulated doubt, reaching out to disenfranchised citizens as well as to those seeking political influence, blaming religious skeptics for immorality and social distress, and demanding affirmation of biblical authority as the foundation of the new American national identity. As the fledgling nation took shape, evangelicals organized aggressively, exploiting the fissures of partisan politics by offering a coherent hierarchy in which God was king and governance righteous. By laying out this narrative, Porterfield demolishes the idea that evangelical growth in the early republic was the cheerful product of enthusiasm for democracy, and she creates for us a very different narrative of influence and ideals in the young republic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wisdom to Doubt is a major contribution to the contemporary literature on the epistemology of religious belief. Continuing the inquiry begun in his previous book, Prolegomena to a Philosophy of Religion, J. L. Schellenberg here argues that given our limitations and especially our immaturity as a species, there is no reasonable choice but to withhold judgment about the existence of an ultimate salvific reality. Schellenberg defends this conclusion against arguments from religious experience and naturalistic arguments that might seem to make either religious belief or religious disbelief preferable to his skeptical stance. In so doing, he canvasses virtually all of the important recent work on the epistemology of religion. Of particular interest is his call for at least skepticism about theism, the most common religious claim among philosophers. The Wisdom to Doubt expands the author's well-known hiddenness argument against theism and situates it within a larger atheistic argument, itself made to serve the purposes of his broader skeptical case. That case need not, on Schellenberg's view, lead to a dead end but rather functions as a gateway to important new insights about intellectual tasks and religious possibilities.

Book excerpt: Pastoral reflections on doubt from an internationally respected theologian In this book celebrated theologian Anthony Thiselton provides clarity on three complicated and long-misunderstood theological concepts that raise urgent practical, pastoral problems for Christians: doubt, faith, and certainty. According to Thiselton, doubt is not always bad, faith can have different meanings in different circumstances, and certainty is fragile. Drawing on his expertise in the fields of exegesis and hermeneutics, biblical studies, and the history of Christian thought, Thiselton works his way through the labyrinth of past definitions while offering better, more nuanced theological understandings of doubt, faith, and certainty. The result is a book that speaks profoundly to existential concerns.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of grand sweeping histories such as From Dawn To Decadence, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, and A History of God, Hecht champions doubt and questioning as one of the great and noble, if unheralded, intellectual traditions that distinguish the Western mind especially-from Socrates to Galileo and Darwin to Wittgenstein and Hawking. This is an account of the world's greatest ‘intellectual virtuosos,' who are also humanity's greatest doubters and disbelievers, from the ancient Greek philosophers, Jesus, and the Eastern religions, to modern secular equivalents Marx, Freud and Darwin—and their attempts to reconcile the seeming meaninglessness of the universe with the human need for meaning, This remarkable book ranges from the early Greeks, Hebrew figures such as Job and Ecclesiastes, Eastern critical wisdom, Roman stoicism, Jesus as a man of doubt, Gnosticism and Christian mystics, medieval Islamic, Jewish and Christian skeptics, secularism, the rise of science, modern and contemporary critical thinkers such as Schopenhauer, Darwin, Marx, Freud, Nietzsche, the existentialists.

"Wray's poems are wry luxury items of intelligence, sheathed in the latent double of speech, where a word like family might mean, in the queer parlance, refuge, but also, refutation. This is an interrogative, primal, mythic collection, a poetry of privacy and disclosure, of contradiction, a disabused landscape under 'razor-wire stars.'"--Randall Mann "NO DOUBT I WILL RETURN A DIFFERENT MAN explores how complicated relationships between fathers and sons cast long shadows over the future self. In Wray's poems, eros shades at times uncomfortably into social violence and self-abnegation, making this book both love song and elegy to masculinity and its performances, to queerness, and to self-invention. Wray's sharp-eared lyrics move between the darkly campy and the sublime, proving that paternal elegies themselves are 'queer things' whose shifting modes allow him to investigate the limits of fatherhood itself."--Paisley Rekdal "Situated in the long posterity of one of the most infamously shattered queer lives, this tense excavation of Alan Turing, this careful and sumptuous overlay of men's secrecies and assignations seventy years apart, is fascinating. NO DOUBT I WILL RETURN A DIFFERENT MAN delves for origins, stirs encryption with erotics, and makes 'caught looking' palpable in its thrill and thrall."--Brian Blanchfield

Book excerpt: "The Value of Philosophy" is one of the most important chapters of Bertrand's Russell's magnum Opus, The Problems of Philosophy. As a whole, Russell focuses on problems he believes will provoke positive and constructive discussion, Russell concentrates on knowledge rather than metaphysics: If it is uncertain that external objects exist, how can we then have knowledge of them but by probability. There is no reason to doubt the existence of external objects simply because of sense data.
