But it is the difcriminating badge of the profefi'ors of Chrifiianity through all the world, to celebrate the firfl day of the week, being Chrill's refnrreeiion-day, and hence called the Lord's day. Now, though the Jews and fame few others plead that the fevernh day from the crea tion is unalterable by virtue of the fourth command, it is lhewed in this treatife, that the words of the fourth com mand are fo framed, that they may be applied to any day of the week that God doth pleali: to pitch upon for the Sabbath, whether it be the firfi or lafi of the feven days. For when it is faid, The feventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God 5 it doth not mean the feventb day from the Creation, but any feventh day after fix days la hour which God pitches on; upon which account it is not called that feventh day, but the feventh day. Neither is the feventh day mentioned in the firfi words of the com. Mand, which contain the fubfiance of it; for it is faid only, 9 Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy, not the feventh day. Nor is the feventh day mentioned in the lafi words of the command, which contain the for mal reafon of it; for it is (aid only, The Lord blefi'ed the Sabbath day and hallowed it, not the feventh day. An Example of Plain Catechising Upon the Assembly's Shorter Catechism For our directory for public worship declares, That the Lord's supper is frequently to be celebrated. Our reformers appointed it to be administered in parishes three or four times in the year, and that ministers who were slothful in the administration of it should be censured, as appears from the Acts of Ass. 1562, and 15965 which are also approven by Ass. 1638, who further ap point, That some course be taken for furnishing of the elements, where the minister of the parish hath allowance only for once in the year 5 that so the want of a fund for communion-elements might not hinder the frequent administration of this ordinance. Again, lest the multiplicity of preaching, or ministers assisting at it, should hinder its frequency, the General Assembly, anno 1645, 'did appoint, That ministers should have, at this work, but two assis tants, who were to provide their own parishes at home with preach ing 5 and that there be but one preparation-sermon on the Satur day; only one sermon 'on the Sabbath morning before serving of the tables, and one thanksgiving-sermon after the communion.
