Book excerpt: President of the African National Congress in South Africa between 1941-49, Alfred B. Xuma was one of the most influential black South Africans of his generation. In this biography of Dr. Xuma, the first of its kind, the author explores the impact of African-American ideas on African nationalism, the debates within the anti-apartheid movement in the 1940s and 1950s, and the often rocky relationship that existed between white liberals and African nationalists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1940s, a violent African criminal society known as the Marashea has operated in and around South Africa’s gold mining areas. With thousands of members involved in drug smuggling, extortion, and kidnapping, the Marashea was more influential in the day-to-day lives of many black South Africans under apartheid than were agents of the state. These gangs remain active in South Africa. In We Are Fighting the World: A History of the Marashea Gangs in South Africa, 1947–1999, Gary Kynoch points to the combination of coercive force and administrative weakness that characterized the apartheid state. As long as crime and violence were contained within black townships and did not threaten adjacent white areas, township residents were largely left to fend for themselves. The Marashea’s ability to prosper during the apartheid era and its involvement in political conflict led directly to the violent crime epidemic that today plagues South Africa. Highly readable and solidly researched, We Are Fighting the World is critical to an understanding of South African society, past and present. This pioneering study challenges previous social history research on resistance, ethnicity, urban spaces, and gender in South Africa. Kynoch’s interviews with many current and former gang members give We Are Fighting the World an energy and a realism that are unparalleled in any other published work on gang violence in southern Africa.

Book excerpt: When the history of Christianity in the 20th Century is written Trevor Huddleston will certainly occupy much space. A major figure in the battle against Apartheid in South Africa, his book Naught for Your Comfort (1956) changed the perception of liberal Westerners about what was really going on in that tortured land. Huddleston was an Anglican monk and thus subject to the rule of obedience. He was called back from South Africa when he was at the height of his intellectual and physical powers. He was made Bishop of Stepney but like too many clergyman was tainted by accusations of sexual impropriety as a result suffered to the limits of human endurance. In his retirement, he lived at the mother house of his order in Mirfield, Yorkshire but his last years were not happy ones as he faded from public attention and underwent periods of deep depression and uncertainty about his fundamental beliefs. Piers McGrandle's new biography of Huddleston is ground breaking in its analysis of what makes men great. But it also brings the reader down to earth with a thud in showing how profoundly complex are the motivations of Christians who have wide influence. As a study in human psychology, McGrandle raises issues which may be applied to many so called 'saints'. After the collapse of Apartheid, Huddleston was able to return to South Africa but never received the recognition that he thought he deserved and this also tortured him.

Book excerpt: The foundations of apartheid are not shaken by people sitting together on park benches, or eating together in multiracial restaurants, or playing together in 'international' sports. But they would be shaken by the absence from the 'white areas' of those blacks whose labour is needed there and by the presence in those areas of blacks who are 'superfluous'. The resettlement policy is the cornerstone of the whole edifice of apartheid. The Surplus People Project has amply demonstrated this and it is to be hoped that as a result there will be not only an increased concern for the victims of that policy but also a concerted attack on the cause of the problem.

Book excerpt: Since Christianity is an ethical as well as a mystical religion and since individuals live in communities, the church is bound to be involved in politics and other social action that determines the quality of human life. So argues Trevor Beeson in this study of how the Church of England’s leaders responded to the radical social changes that transformed life in Britain during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Their response was never prompt and rarely enthusiastic, and all too often the bishops resisted change in society as well as in the church. Nonetheless there were always a few prophets who recognised the need for reform and sometimes led the way to its realisation. Trevor Beeson traces the course of a fascinating period of history, starting from the time when church and state were bonded in an all-embracing unity, then moving through turbulent and and sometimes violent times in which the church struggled to discover a new vocation. Trevor Beeson analyses 18 key issues of the period in his usual robust style together with pen-portraits of the leading figures involved.. He ends with a critical evalualtion of the performances of some recent church leaders and outlines what he believes to be the appropriate basis for the intervention of bishops and other clergy in an increasingly secularised society that no longer recognises their authority. The duty to make pronouncements of Christian principle remains but these must normally point decision-makers in constructive directions rather than offering directives for the solutions of complex social and economic problems.

Book excerpt: For more than 300 years Chinese have been part of the fascinating mix of people who make up the inhabitants of the southern tip of Africa. One of the smallest and most identifiable minority groups in arguably the most race-conscious country in the world, they have not up to now been the focus of serious historical attention. This detailed and descriptive chronological account aims to fill a gap in available histories by providing a comprehensive record of the Chinese in South Africa from the earliest times to the mid-1990s.
