Book excerpt: Excerpt from The West in the Diplomacy of the American Revolution In this essay I have tried to show to what extent and in what respects the Mississippi Valley was a subject Of diplo matic negotiations in the American Revolution. Altho many different views have been advanced on this question, I do not believe that any American scholar has, as yet, made any considerable use Of the material available in this coun try and Europe for the purpose Of getting at the exact truth. Boniol did not appreciate the importance Of the West in the diplomacy of the American Revolution, and, altho he quotes many important documents bearing on the subject, he omits many of the most valuable, and in no sense does he attempt to explain the whole question. Gerard to Ver-gennes, March 3. (E. U., VII, no. 67, fol. 131.) The debates on the question of the boundaries and the navigation of the Mississippi continued from the 1st of March to the 19th. On the question of the Mississippi important interests in the West and South united to demand the right of navigation. Those interested in the Northwest Territory pictured the great advantages to the South of controlling the trade of this region. If our people do not get this trade, they argued, the English will get it, and thus become powerful in a region where it is to the interest of both Spain and the United States to keep them out.35 So powerful did the opposition to giving up the Mississippi become that Gerard felt it necessary to interfere. Through one of his partisans he learned that...

Book excerpt: This valuable book provides a succinct, readable account of an oft-neglected topic in the historiography of the American Revolution: the role of Native Americans in the Revolution's outbreak, progress, and conclusion. There has not been an all-encompassing narrative of the Native American experience during the American Revolutionary War period—until now. Native Americans in the American Revolution: How the War Divided, Devastated, and Transformed the Early American Indian World fills that gap in the literature, provides full coverage of the Revolution's effects on Native Americans, and details how Native Americans were critical to the Revolution's outbreak, its progress, and its conclusion. The work covers the experiences of specific Native American groups such as the Abenaki, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Delaware, Iroquois, Seminole, and Shawnee peoples with information presented by chronological period and geographic area. The first part of the book examines the effects of the Imperial Crisis of the 1760s and early 1770s on Native peoples in the Northern colonies, Southern colonies, and Ohio Valley respectively. The second section focuses on the effects of the Revolutionary War itself on these three regions during the years of ongoing conflict, and the final section concentrates on the postwar years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years from 1775 to 1815 could be called the ôcritical periodö of American foreign relations. At no time in American history was the existence of the republic in greater physical peril. Questions of foreign policy dominated American public life in a way unequalled until World War II. From the American Revolution through the War of 1812, the United States was a small power confronted by great powers hostile to one another and to the United States. Furthermore, the era was dominated by two revolutions that reshaped the Atlantic world. The problem for American diplomats and foreign policymakers was to preserve the United States, both as an independent nation and as a republic, in a decidedly unequal contest with the great powers. According to historian Robert W. Smith, the question of American power lay at the heart of the debate over independence. The radicals believed that the American spirit and market were enough, so they favored rapid independence and an aggressive promotion of neutral rights. The moderates doubted American power and were inclined to move slowly and only with assured French assistance. By the end of the American Revolution, the moderates had won the argument. But their victory masked the defects of the confederation until the diplomatic humiliations of the 1780s forced the United States to create a government that could properly harness American economic and military power. The controversy over the power of the United States to reshape a hostile world remains as central today as in 1776.
