Book excerpt: Into Action is the story of the Irish Defence Forces’ role as international peacekeepers since 1960. While primarily posted to uphold the transition towards peace in overseas conflicts, they have at times inevitably been forced to fight back against often aggressive opposition. Dan Harvey’s fascinating and accessible history follows the major military incidents in the peacekeepers’ sixty-year campaign, from Niemba, the Siege at Jadotville, and Elizabethville in the Congo to At-Tiri in Lebanon, and Durbol in Syria. These are to name just a few of the military engagements that involved supreme bravery on behalf of the Irish Defence Forces and, at times, ended in terrible tragedy. Dan Harvey’s detailed account of the military operations they were involved in reveal the defence forces’ effective responses to crisis and conflict; how they stood firm during ethnically-motivated rioting in Gracancia or intervened in the midst of a clash between Chadian government forces and rebel attackers, and how the Irish nation was halted into mourning in November 1960 by news that nine soldiers of the 33rd Irish Battalion had been killed by Baluba warriors near Niemba in the Congo. These are the deeds and tragedies that have come to define Ireland’s role in international peacekeeping. Into Action reveals the true story of this role and the immense courage that have underlined its operations from the beginning.

To maintain the nation's high quality of life, prosperity must increase while remaining sustainable. Combining Tom Brzustowski's extensive knowledge of government, industry, and academia, The Way Ahead, articulates a strategy for moving the Canadian economy towards higher-value products based on research and development, describing the practical steps government, industry and academia must take to improve things in the short term and prepare strategically for the long term. He recommends increasing productivity growth by embracing an economy based on innovation, prioritizing research and development, marketing Canadian products internationally, and encouraging entrepreneurial activities in all sectors. Ultimately, increasing prosperity will require a new level of understanding, strategic coherence, and mutual support between the private and public sectors in Canada, a challenge that the author feels Canada is prepared to and absolutely must face.

Addressing the dynamic nature of process drama, it provides a clear and rigorous explanation of the theory of process drama and links it to practice. Drawing on a wide range of detailed examples from the authors’ international and cross-cultural practice, it demonstrates how an effective process drama operates in action. Written to help practitioners and students produce powerful, artistic and educative experiences, chapters cover: pedagogy and the improvised nature of the art form; the structural framework and making shifts in the drama; the role of actor, director, playwright and teacher; monitoring emotional range; progression and the importance of reflection; the spiral of creative exchange and the complexities of co-creativity. Putting Process Drama into Action will be an essential guide for students undertaking initial teacher training at primary level, in addition to those studying both Drama and English at secondary level. It will also prove to be essential reading for specialist and non-specialist teachers in the primary and secondary sectors who teach, or wish to teach, process drama.

Book excerpt: As he navigates a strange new world, Edwin weighs forming alliances and deciding who to trust, in the fourth book of this smart, entertaining fantasy series. Ever since Edwin Maxlin literally fell out of the sky and landed in Joriah, life has been a little bit complicated. For one thing, he's adapting to a new world that's nothing like Earth. For another, he's learning magic, leveling up skills, and adjusting his scientific knowledge to a whole new set of natural rules. Plus, he's an outsider maneuvering the dangerous politics of an empire he knows zilch about. No wonder he hasn't had much time to rest. Having devoted himself to training and studying (when he's not building incredible new inventions!), Edwin's finally starting to get somewhat of a handle on all his new abilities—with the help of fellow adventurer Lefi and water naiad Inion. But as his quest for improvement brings him closer to the mysterious and mystically powerful Rillah, he's faced with a new set of obstacles. Because in a world where his very existence could make him a target, Edwin must be very careful about who he lets get close . . . Effortlessly combining elements of high fantasy, character-driven storytelling, and the scientific method, The Way Ahead 4 is the fun, funny, and fantastically addictive next chapter of a remarkable quest. The fourth volume of the hit LitRPG adventure series—with more than 3.5 million views on Royal Road—now available on Audible and wherever ebooks are sold!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Action Learning is the brain-child of Professor Reginald (Reg) Revans. Revans believed that management was a practical subject carried out by practical people in the real world of work, not an academic subject to be taught by University Professors who had no experience of the real world of work. Action learning uses the participant's actual job to identify and satisfy real learning needs; the specific Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Behavior appropriate to the situation. Unlike training It provides a 'holistic' framework through which all four aspects of our behavioral 'package' are objectively assessed by the facilitator and 'comrades in adversity' to help participants identify the things they need to change to be successful. These needs once identified are met through a development program created and monitored with the help and support of the facilitator and colleagues in the set. This book; 1. Explains the philosophy of Action Learning 2. Describes the various models and their application. 3. Provides an objective analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the various options 4. Examines how Action Learning can help in today's world to develop organisations and their people. 5. Offers reference information for those who would like to learn more. Note. Whilst Reg's focus for Action Learning was on management development this process is equally applicable to any personal or organisational development need. We hope you will find this book useful and are happy to help interested readers with further information or advice on specific program design and management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, climate change adaptation and mitigation have been treated separately both in research and in the climate negotiations. However, a growing body of literature is now being developed that points to actual and potential synergies and trade-offs between responses to climate change and sustainability. This literature has evolved in a spontaneous way with diverse approaches and no common methodology to help practitioners explicitly plan for these synergies. This special issue of the Climate Policy journal addresses this gap between scientific knowledge and practitioners' needs by focussing on linkages between climate change and sustainable development at the level of conceptual framework and methods. In particular, the papers address in an integrated way local development options involving both adaptation and mitigation in order to promote resilience to climate change in human and natural systems. The special issue provides policy and methodological guidelines for linking local deveopment pathways with responses to climate change, based on collaboration between local practitioners, the public and scientists.

Book excerpt: Featuring discussions and dialogue by prominent scientists and philosophers, this book explores the rich interface of contemporary physics and Whitehead-inspired process thought. The contributors share the conviction that quantum physics not only corroborates many of Whitehead's philosophical theses, but is also illuminated by them. Thus, though differing in perspective or emphasis, the contributions by Geoffrey Chew, David Finkelstein, Henry Stapp and other scientists conceptually dovetail with those of Philip Clayton, Jorge Nobo, Yutaka Tanaka and other process philosophers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As long as we live, the future is coming to pass. There it is, a promise or a specter. To one man it brings joy and the realization of his dreams–to another, tragedy. All your life you have seen such futures happening. Years ago, some intimate of yours gave evidence of splendid possibilities. Now he is a broken man, sick and discredited. An acquaintance you believed had little promise is wealthy and revered. How did it happen? No question is more important than this, none upon which you and I need more light. Here we are, working at our tasks, trying to save a little money, giving what love we have to our intimates, and hoping, always hoping, for a better tomorrow. But suppose we are working, saving, struggling to no avail? We need to do something about tomorrow NOW. What if we discover, years from now, that ignorance of certain laws and the neglect of important methods compromised our efforts and left us disappointed? That is our fear. You can’t build the future in the future. You can only plan for it by constructive programs and positive actions today. There is now something for you to take, and something for you to give. Your giving may be only a courteous attention to another man’s ideas, but that is something–in fact, much. When this act of giving and taking is wisely repeated you learn not only that you can produce a constantly unfolding life, but how–which is to some point. We must be ready to meet the ever changing scene. Surely this has always been true. Does not the art of planning one’s future begin with alert interest in how to overcome the obstacles of today? Tomorrow is new. New ways are necessary in the now if we are to be ready for the time to come. Suppose, instead of living in this century, you were a primitive man trying to lift a massive stone, tearing your bleeding fingers. Suppose someone came along with a crowbar, crying “Here, I’ve a lever, I’ll pry the rock out for you.” What would you do: go on tugging, or stand back and let him use his bar? If you saw him accomplish the task with ease would you let the man go away, leaving you to struggle with other rocks, or would you ask him how such levers work? Suppose that then, after you had learned all about this easier way of moving rocks, you discovered this stranger used other methods new to you. He could move things around on what he called “wheels.” He knew how to harness a waterfall and make it work for you. He could hollow out a log so that, in it, you could travel with ease on the water. Wouldn’t you become a little excited and want to find out more of what he knew? I have been excited a good many years now over what seems to me a most amazing fact. The discovery of how to control matter, to make physical life easier, came to mankind slowly. Insight into how a like transformation may take place in a man’s handling of his own life has come in one generation. Most people are not yet aware of it. Few realize what has been happening, for millions are toiling greedily and fighting bitterly everywhere. They know that science and mechanics have made over the face of the earth. They do not know that psychology and its sister sciences are making a like change for man’s handling of his own nature.

His company asked him to relocate from his Home Counties base to Austria. As a divorced father of two young children this meant a new approach to work, fatherhood and culture shock as he explores life in a new country. Little did he know that this was also the first step on his spiritual journey to enlightenment. The Tarot cards signpost his journey with the story following Roberts ups and downs as he tries to come to terms with a different lifestyle, long-distance parenting and the gradual revelation of another kind of life.
