Book excerpt: Aboard a long-range research vessel, in the vast reaches of the South Pacific, the cast and crew of the reality show Sealife believe they have found a ratings bonanza. For a director dying for drama, a distress call from Henders Island—a mere blip on any radar—might be just the ticket. Until the first scientist sets foot on Henders—and the ultimate test of survival begins. For when they reach the island’s shores, the scientists are utterly unprepared for what they find—creatures unlike any ever recorded in natural history. This is not a lost world frozen in time; this is Earth as it might have looked after evolving on a separate path for half a billion years—a fragment of a lost continent, with an ecosystem that could topple ours like a house of cards.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Watsons The manuscript of Jane Austen's unfinished, it might almost be called inchoate, tale which her nephew appended to the second edition of his Memoir in 1871 with the title of The Watsons, bears the watermarks of 1803 and 1804, and is believed to have been written before she left Bath in 1805 and after the composition of Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice. It would be uncritical to compare an apparently unrevised fragment with either of these masterpieces. And yet, artistry apart, the three works obviously have elements in common. The first of these is the social scheme: the relation of a modest household of sisters with contrasted temperaments to the great (as Jane Austen herself used the word great) family of the neighbourhood. What the Middletons are to the Dashwoods and the Bingleys, with their still "greater" friend Darcy, to the Bennets, that the Osbornes are to the Watsons: a constant preoccupation, a standard to be accepted or criticised but never ignored, for good or ill a permanent influence. Book excerpt: What happens when the writer loses the plot? Emma Watson is nineteen and new in town. She's been cut off by her rich aunt and dumped back in the family home. Emma and her sisters must marry, fast. If not, they face poverty, spinsterhood, or worse: an eternity with their boorish brother and his awful wife. Luckily there are plenty of potential suitors to dance with, from flirtatious Tom Musgrave to castle-owning Lord Osborne, who's as awkward as he is rich. So far so familiar. But there's a problem: Jane Austen didn't finish the story. Who will write Emma's happy ending now? Based on her incomplete novel, this sparklingly witty play looks under the bonnet of Jane Austen and asks: what can characters do when their author abandons them?

Book excerpt: A stand-alone novel of magic and adventure by the renowned fantasy author Diana Wynne Jones, who also wrote Howl's Moving Castle and the Chrestomanci books. Almost finished upon her death in 2011, the manuscript was completed by Diana's sister Ursula Jones, an acclaimed novelist and actress. Publishers Weekly called The Islands of Chaldea "a story to cherish" in their starred review. Aileen comes from a long line of magic makers, and her aunt Beck is the most powerful magician on Skarr. But Aileen's magic has yet to reveal itself, even though she is old enough and it should have by now. When Aileen is sent over the sea on a mission for the King, she worries that she'll be useless and in the way. A powerful talking cat changes all of that—and with every obstacle Aileen faces, she becomes stronger and more confident, until her magic blooms. This stand-alone novel, by the beloved and acclaimed author of such classic fantasy novels as Howl's Moving Castle and the Chrestomanci books, will be welcomed by fans old and new. "Jones's imaginative vigor is unabated in this last, picaresque novel; her deft, fluid style and penchant for precise, characterful description are amply present," proclaimed The Horn Book.

This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unfinished Austen examines four texts that Jane Austen left incomplete: Catharine, or the Bower (1792–-3), Lady Susan (1795?), The Watsons (1803–-4?) and Sanditon (1817), none of them published till well after her death. Since very little in manuscript form survives from the six famous novels, these four manuscript texts offer insight into the novelist in the process of creation. They also problematize the romance plot prominent in the published novels by presenting this in a nebulous or incipient state that underlines its artificiality. These texts sometimes show how the romance plot is inflected by the financial condition in which young marriageable women can find themselves. Moreover, the stories (other than Catharine) have aroused the interest of many later writers—including writers for theatre and screen—who are eager to complete or to amplify them. They may do this through developing the stories to some kind of dénouement. Perhaps more intriguingly, however, these texts induce some writers to question the very enterprise of concluding an unfinished text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Austen wrote the untitled fragment that was later called The Watsons in 1803-5, and it was published posthumously in 1871. Joan Aiken, well known for her Jane Austen sequels and children's books, finishes the fragment, introducing a new hero and seamlessly continuing where Jane Austen left off to a satisfying ending for all Austen fans. Emma Watson returns home after 14 years spent with a beloved aunt, whose re-marriage has caused a significant change in Emma's circumstances. Used to a life of ease, warmth and intelligence, Emma is thrust back into a home where, with one exception, her sisters are petty and jealous, if not vulgar, her father is ill and weak, and her brothers are not men of fine minds. This is a poignant exploration of a young lady's endurance in the face of reduced circumstances, and in true Jane Austen fashion, there is an admirable hero to make all right in the end.

Book excerpt: "The Watsons" by Jane Austen is an unfinished novel that offers a tantalizing glimpse into the social intricacies and character dynamics that Austen fans cherish. Despite its incomplete status, the fragment provides a fascinating window into the world of the Watson family and showcases Austen's trademark wit, keen social observation, and nuanced character development. Set in the early 19th century, "The Watsons" centers around Emma Watson, a young woman who has been raised by a wealthy aunt and is suddenly returned to her modest family after her aunt remarries. Emma's re-entry into her family's life and the local society forms the crux of the story, and through her interactions, Austen explores themes of class, family duty, and romantic aspirations. The Watson family is portrayed with Austen's usual attention to detail and complexity. Emma's father is ailing, and her siblings each have distinct personalities and concerns. Her sisters, Elizabeth, Penelope, and Margaret, have their own romantic and social ambitions, adding layers of domestic tension and ambition to the narrative. Emma herself is a typical Austen heroine-intelligent, observant, and morally grounded. Her return to her family's more humble circumstances after living in relative luxury presents her with numerous challenges and social adjustments. Through Emma, Austen examines the limitations and expectations placed upon women in her society, as well as the opportunities for personal growth and resilience. The social milieu of "The Watsons" includes potential suitors and neighbors who enrich the narrative with their diverse backgrounds and intentions. Notably, Mr. Howard, a clergyman, and Tom Musgrave, a charming but insincere gentleman, emerge as central figures in the unfolding social dynamics. Their interactions with Emma and her sisters promise intriguing developments and romantic entanglements. Although Austen abandoned "The Watsons" after writing only a few chapters, the existing text brims with her characteristic irony and insight. Scholars and fans often speculate on how she might have continued the story, imagining the romantic and social resolutions she might have crafted for her characters. "The Watsons" is a testament to Jane Austen's enduring skill in creating vivid, believable characters and her sharp critique of the social structures of her time. While it remains unfinished, the fragment is a valuable piece of literature that invites readers to appreciate Austen's genius and ponder the possibilities of what might have been a completed novel. For those who admire Austen's completed works, "The Watsons" offers a unique and compelling look at her creative process and the themes she consistently explored. It remains a significant part of Austen's literary legacy, celebrated for its promise and the rich potential of its narrative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 20 December 1977, as Stanley Watson takes the slow train journey to family Christmas, memories from over 60 years ago play in his mind. He had been and still was a man of his time, as as steady, simple and direct as the railway lines he built. As an engineer in the 28th Signalling Company, recently wed and with a young child, he knew it to be his duty to enlist as soon as war broke out in 1914. He left for Egypt in October and he knows his wife is pregnant as he reaches Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, a participant in that fateful landing that is writ large in Australian history. He survived that landing to construct the first pier at Anzac Cove, from which the Anzacs withdrew on the nights of 18 and 19 December. For a long time, he was known as the last man to leave Gallipoli. Watson's Pier is a beautifully told story as seen through the eyes of Stanley Watson, one of the leaders of the escape from Gallipoli. It draws on Watson’s story, his writing, oral history and the official war records. While telling one man's remarkable experience of war for the first time, Watson's Pier challenges history on the final moments at ANZAC Cove and offers a new perspective on the meaning of Gallipoli.
