Book excerpt: Corvis Rebaine is no hero. In his trademark suit of black armour and skull-like helm, armed with a demon-forged axe and with allies that include a bloodthirsty ogre, Rebaine has twice brought death and destruction to Imphallion in pursuit of a better, more equitable and just society. If he had to kill countless innocents in order to achieve that dream, so be it. At least that was the old Rebaine. Before he slew the mad warlord Audriss. Before he banished the demon Khanda. Before he lost his wife and children, who could neither forgive nor forget his violent crimes. Now, years later, Rebaine lives in a distant city, under a false name. He's a member of one of the Guilds he despises and trying to achieve change nonviolently, from within the power structure. But just because Corvis has changed doesn't mean everyone else has. When Imphallion is invaded the bickering Guilds once again prove unable to respond . . . but someone wearing Rebaine's trademark black armour, and bearing what appears to be his axe, does. Someone who is, if anything, even less careful of human life than Rebaine was. Worse, Rebaine's old nemesis Baron Jassion is hunting him once more, aided by a mysterious sorcerer named Kaleb, and a young woman who hates Corvis Rebaine more than anyone else: his own daughter, Mellorin. Suddenly Rebaine seems to have no choice. To clear his name, to protect his country, and to reconcile with his family, must he become the Terror of the East again?

Following the close of the Cold War era, Communism was no longer a pervasive force. Because Communist countries invested a significant amount of resources into military power, their economies became weak and neglected. Today, the nuclear arsenals created during the Cold War still exist, causing concern that these nuclear weapons will be used in the future. After the United States defeated the Soviet Union, it emerged as the preeminent world leader and became a strong influence on international politics. This book explores the political, economic, and technological impact of the Cold War on life today.

Book excerpt: Why al Qaeda is winning its war against the West—and America has been playing right into its hands In the decade since 9/11, the United States has grown weaker: It has been bogged down by costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It has spent billions of dollars on security to protect air travel and other transport, as well as the homeland more generally. Much of this money has been channeled into efforts that are inefficient by design and highly bureaucratic, a lack of coordination between and among the government and an array of contractors making it difficult to evaluate the return on the enormous investment that we have made in national security. Meanwhile, public morale has been sapped by measures ranging from color-coded terror alerts to full-body hand searches. Now counterterrorism expert Daveed Gartenstein-Ross details the strategic missteps the U.S. has made in the fight against al Qaeda, a group that U.S. planners never really took the time to understand. For this reason, America's responses to the terrorist threat have often unwittingly helped al Qaeda achieve its goals. Gartenstein-Ross's book explains what the country must do now to stem the bleeding. Explains in detail al Qaeda's strategy to sap and undermine the American economy, and shows how the United States played into the terrorist group's hands by expanding the battlefield and setting up an expensive homeland security bureaucracy that has difficulty dealing with a nimble, adaptive foe Outlines how al Qaeda's economic plans have evolved toward an ultimate "strategy of a thousand cuts," which involves smaller yet more frequent attacks against Western societies Shows how the domestic politicization of terrorism has weakened the United States, skewing its priorities and causing it to misallocate counterterrorism resources Offers a practical plan for building domestic resiliency against terrorist attacks, and escaping the mistakes that have undermined America's war against its jihadist foes Clearly written and powerfully argued by a prominent counterterrorism expert.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The military adventure that George W. Bush embarked on within months of his inauguration in 2001 was to eclipse everything else in his presidency. His name will forever be synonymous with the "war on terror." What started as a military response to al Qaeda's attacks in New York and Washington on 9/11, with the goal of neutralizing al Qaeda and its Taliban hosts in Afghanistan, quickly fused with the neo-conservative agenda to dominate and reshape the Middle East. Al Qaeda's terrorism was answered by the terror of American military power, which has destroyed or blighted the lives of millions in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan. Deepak Tripathi, a former BBC correspondent who has kept a keen eye on the region for more than three decades, identifies systematically the naive calculations, strategic and operational blunders, disregard for history and for other cultures, and even downright prejudice that have brought so much harm to so many. The legacy of Bush's foreign policy will take years to overcome, Tripathi argues. His war on terror provoked resentment and violent opposition, opened up sectarian divisions, and created Hobbesian conditions of war of all against all. The long-term price tag for America has been estimated at a colossal $3 trillion, but as Tripathi seeks to demonstrate, the overall cost, in human and economic terms, will be incalculable.

Recent proposals to revive the ancient Silk Road for the contemporary era and ongoing Western interest in China’s growth and development have led to increased attention to the concept of pan-Asianism. Most of that discussion, however, lacks any historical grounding in the thought of influential twentieth-century pan-Asianists. In this book, Viren Murthy offers an intellectual history of the writings of theorists, intellectuals, and activists—spanning leftist, conservative, and right-wing thinkers—who proposed new ways of thinking about Asia in their own historical and political contexts. Tracing pan-Asianist discourse across the twentieth century, Murthy reveals a stronger tradition of resistance and alternative visions than the contemporary discourse on pan-Asianism would suggest. At the heart of pan-Asianist thinking, Murthy shows, were the notions of a unity of Asian nations, of weak nations becoming powerful, and of the Third World confronting the “advanced world” on equal terms—an idea that grew to include non-Asian countries into the global community of Asian nations. But pan-Asianists also had larger aims, imagining a future beyond both imperialism and capitalism. The fact that the resurgence of pan-Asianist discourse has emerged alongside the dominance of capitalism, Murthy argues, signals a profound misunderstanding of its roots, history, and potential.

Book excerpt: 'The Legacy of Iraq' critically reflects on the abject failure of the 2003 intervention to turn Iraq into a liberal democracy, underpinned by free-market capitalism, its citizens free to live in peace and prosperity. It argues that mistakes made by the coalition and the Iraqi political elite set a sequence of events in motion that have had devastating consequences for Iraq, the Middle East and for the rest of the world. Today, as the nation faces perhaps its greatest challenge in the wake of the devastating advance of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and another US-led coalition undertakes renewed military action in Iraq, understanding the complex and difficult legacies of the 2003 war could not be more urgent. Ignoring the legacies of the Iraq war and denying their connection to contemporary events could means that vital lessons are ignored and the same mistakes made again.

Book excerpt: In November 2019 three prime ministers gathered at the Rosewood hotel, a five-star hotel in England, and offered the world's wealthiest people 'golden passports' and citizenship of their countries in return for hundreds of thousands of pounds of investment or flat "contributions". Allen Chastanet, the prime minister of the Caribbean island of St Lucia, told about 300 members of the super-rich elite that his country's mission was 'going after high net-worth individuals and giving them a comfortable place to live'... Malta, which is also an EU member state, has sold citizenship to five people charged with criminal offences overseas. They include Anatoly Hurgin, an Israeli citizen charged by the US and Israeli authorities with fraud, smuggling and money-laundering. This prestigious event was organised by Henley & Partners, a London-based firm that acts as matchmaker between the super-rich and countries selling their citizenships. Henley has made tens of millions of dollars in commission from selling citizenship.

Book excerpt: With Qaboos bin Said al Said becoming the self-appointed leader of Oman in 1970 (after overthrowing his father in a palace coup) Oman's human rights situation is among the worst in the world. Human rights violations in Oman seem to include abductions and arbitrary arrests; as well as severe restrictions on freedom of press with many journalists and activists being arrested under penal code provisions which criminalize insulting the Sultan; hence the current status quo of severe restrictions of public freedoms in the country. Critical, but also deeply sensitive and humane, this book endeavours to improve public policy in Oman. Social challenges - such as gender inequality and press freedom violations - are also explored in this work. Highly innovative and profound, this book explores social scientific-, ethical and Islamic approaches, so that human rights, social equality and public freedoms can be improved in Oman.

Book excerpt: US President Trump's withdrawal of the remaining 1,000 US special forces from Kurdish-held Syria means Moscow and Ankara have emerged as the two main foreign players in Syria's long war. Russia has emerged as Syria's major powerbroker, with powerful sway on all sides. Turkey has suggested it wants Moscow to persuade Damascus to cede it control over a major chunk of territory in the north-east, which would break up Kurdish control. Kurdish officials, however, are hoping Russia can negotiate with Assad to help preserve some of the autonomy they have carved out for themselves during Syria's civil war. Despite the ceasefire, intermittent fighting between the SDF and Ankara's Syrian rebel proxies has continued; with at least 140 civilians having died in recent weeks... Hence it is imperative that a just peace is finally manifested in Syria as soon as possible, and that the Kurdish people will be treated fairly; through the process of constructive mediation and peacebuilding.

Book excerpt: With Bulgaria's right-wing populist government orchestrating rule of law violations in the EU's backyard - including the violation of democracy, media freedom and refugee rights - Bulgaria's political leaders need to improve and reinvent themselves; especially the leader of the ruling GERB Party, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov. Otherwise Bulgaria must be expelled from the European Union; which would give Bulgaria's government the privilege of receiving their marching orders from Moscow again; like in the old days, when Bulgaria was part of the Soviet Union. Critical, but also deeply sensitive and humane, this book explores social scientific and ethical approaches, so that public freedoms can be restored in Bulgaria. Social challenges - such as press freedom violations and political corruption - are also explored in this work; as corruption still highlights one of Bulgaria's main problems; Bulgaria being the most corrupt country in the EU, and also having the lowest score on press freedom in the European Union.

Book excerpt: A young kid with a cool hairstyle, Kim Jong-un seems to have pledged his undying loyalty to Comrade Stalin's ghost; gambling with the lives of an entire nation just to win a game of chicken against the U.S.; policies of militarism and nuclear armament which are not only counterproductive to the global peace movement, but also a very considerable waste of money and effort, distorting national spending priorities in North Korea, with millions of North Koreans living in extreme poverty. This book also studies human rights abuses in North Korea, such as politically motivated incarceration of people in internment- and reeducation camps; often just normal peace loving North Korean people who merely wish to exercise their basic human rights, such as freedom of speech and expression. These and other issues Dr. O'Doherty explores, offering an intelligent social-scientific analysis on these matters, so that a positive collective consciencousness can be manifested between North Korea and the International Community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unexpected end of the protracted conflict has been a sobering experience for scholars. No theory had anticipated how the Cold War would be terminated, and none should also be relied upon to explicate its legacy. But instead of relying on preconceived formulas to project past developments, taking a historical perspective to explain their causes and consequences allows one to better understand trends and their long-term significance. The present book takes such perspective, focusing on the evolution of security, its substance as well as its perception, the concurrent development of alliances and other cooperative structures for security, and their effectiveness in managing conflicts. In The Legacy of the Cold War Vojtech Mastny and Zhu Liqun bring together scholars to examine the worldwide effects of the Cold War on international security. Focusing on regions where the Cold War made the most enduring impact―the Euro-Atlantic area and East Asia―historians, political scientists, and international relations scholars explore alliances and other security measures during the Cold War and how they carry over into the twenty-first century.
