The cause of this war was the invasion of Luxemburg and Belgium. We declared war because we were bound by treaty to declare war. We have been pledged to protect the integrity of Belgium since the kingdom of Belgium has existed. If the Germans had not broken the guarantees they shared with us to respect the neutrality of these little States we should certainly not be at war at the present time. The fortified eastern frontier of France could have been held against any attack without any help from us. We had no obligations and no interests there. We were pledged to France simply to protect her from a naval attack by sea, but the Germans had already given us an undertaking not to make such an attack. It was our Belgian treaty and the sudden outrage on Luxemburg that precipitated us into this conflict. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The End of the War As I write this postscript, which is also an introduction, the fate of the world is being decided upon the fields of Picardy. Hundreds of millions in all the Allied countries are praying for the success of the British, French and American soldiers, who are seeking to stem the tide of German invasion and end for all time the dream of a German world-dominion. While that battle rages all other pre-occupations are thrust from our minds. If, by evil chance, the German arms are crowned with success, the end of the war will be one that we cannot contemplate except with horror. The Allies must hold, must fling back this gigantic onrush, or the power of decision will pass from them and will rest with their German conquerors. The book to which this is a postscript is based upon the assumption that the Allies can hold their own and can thus exert a decisive influence upon peace and upon the diplomacy that leads to peace. The book is an appeal to America to assume leadership in that diplomacy, to eliminate imperialistic elements from the demands of our Allies, and to attempt a settlement based on internationalism. No Power in the world would have respected our Flag or accepted our national word again if we had not fought. So much for the immediate cause of the war.But now we come to the object of this war. We began to fight because our honour and our pledge obliged us; but so soon as we are embarked upon the fighting we have to ask ourselves what is the end at which our fighting aims. We cannot simply put the Germans back over the Belgian border and tell them not to do it again. We find ourselves at war with that huge military empire with which we have been doing our best to keep the peace since first it rose upon the ruins of French Imperialism in 1871. And war is mortal conflict. We have now either to destroy or be destroyed. We have not sought this reckoning, we have done our utmost to avoid it; but now that it has been forced upon us it is imperative that it should be a thorough reckoning. This is a war that touches every man and every home in each of the combatant countries. It is a war, as Mr. Sidney Low has said, not of soldiers but of whole peoples. And it is a war that must be fought to such a finish that every man in each of the nations engaged understands what has happened. There can be no diplomatic settlement that will leave German Imperialism free to explain away its failure to its people and start new preparations. We have to go on until we are absolutely done for, or until the Germans as a people know that they are beaten, and are convinced that they have had enough of war.

In the countries of all the great Allied Powers there have been found those who answered 1t to their own satisfaction as patriots, because it is easy to demonstrate that the war would not have been won, as and 'when it was won, had any of those countries failed to do what it actually achieved. Most of us, however, are agreed that victory was the result of combination, and I am convinced that that opinion will grow stronger the better the story is known. During the struggle the news we received of the doings of the armies of our Allies was natur ally even more limited than was that of the doings of our own men, and it was not easy to allot to each its place in the general scheme. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the World War IT is impossible in a small volume to write the history of the World War in even a partially exhaustive manner. Nor is that the Object of the book. Rather than to deal with generalities, its purpose is to describe separate events of which I had intimate knowledge, and individuals with whom I came into close contact and could, therefore, Observe closely; in fact, to furnish a series of snapshots of the great drama. By this means the following pages may possibly pre sent a conception of the war as a whole, which may, nevertheless, differ in many respects from the hitherto recorded, and possibly faulty, history of the war. Every one regards people and events from his own point of View; it is inevitable. In my book, I speak of men with whom I was in Close touch; of others who crossed my path without leaving any personal im pression on me; and finally, of men with whom I was Often in grave dispute. I endeavor to judge of them all in Objective fashion, but I have to describe people and things as I saw them. Wherever the description appears to be at fault, the reason will not be due to a prematurely formed opinion, but rather, probably, to a prevailing lack Of the capacity for judging. Not everything could be revealed. Much was not explained, although it could have been. Too short a period still separates us from those events to justify the lifting of the veil from all that happened. But what remains unspoken can in no way change the whole picture which I describe exactly as imprinted on my mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War, and How to End It The anti-slavery principles laid down in the Chicago Platform, though not in all respects such as many earnest men desired to see put forth by a great party, were the best the people at that time could be induced to accept; and, as such, practical men, who preferred to secure something really good, rather than lose all by maintaining an unpopular though indisputably just theory, acquiesced in and gave them a cordial support. The people (at the East, if not in this State, ) are now prepared to take another step in advance; but the Administration seem to act as if bound by the party platform, although that platform was made for a time of peace, and the war has put an entirely different face upon public affairs. The people, however, are not bound by any effete party theory, and the people, when convinced of the desirability of a new course of action, always compel the Government to change its policy. To assist in convincing them that a change is not merely desirable, but that the sooner it is effected the better, the following pages were written. Public opinion (not always an enlightened public opinion by any means, ) rules, in this country, and often directs the course of Government before it finds expression through the ballot-box. Public opinion is ripening in favor of the abolition of slavery, but information is required to remove many prejudices. The writer believes Emancipation must be proclaimed - either soon, as a laudable object to be obtained by the war, or later, as an unavoidable necessity resulting from it; and as delay must be productive of great evil, he believes immediate and complete Emancipation is our best policy, and hopes this pamphlet may be the means of directing the public mind to the investigation of a subject which must ultimately force itself upon us, and perhaps in a manner less agreeable than now, when we have time to give it a cordial welcome and a careful study. During the past twenty years great interest has been taken in the matter of war and peace, and thousands of good men and women have discussed the question of whether war can be abolished, and a reign of universal peace ushered in within a short time. For generations, yes for centuries, men have dreamed of peace on earth, but wars and rumors of wars have continued, and within the past six years we have witnessed perhaps the greatest and most costly war that the world has ever seen; a war that has involved nearly all the nations of the earth, and has cost the lives of millions of men, and billions of dollars, and has left in its train so much woe and evil that it seems to have cursed the nations of the earth for years, perhaps for generations to come. In the face of all this loss and destruction, certainly no sane man can deny the frightful evils of war, and no sincere well-wisher of the human race can avoid the hope that some way may be found to put an end to a system of settling disputes among nations that causes so much misery and loss to all the parties involved therein. This book is devoted to the task of showing that since the people are opposed to war the logical way to end it is to take the power to declare war from minorities who misuse it and vest it in the people who may be depended upon not to use it at all. Public sentiment in favor of peace can be of little practical value so long as a minority in each nation control the war-making machinery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winning a Cause, World War Stories Lest We Forget, the first volume of World War stories, gave an outline of the struggle up to the time of the signing of the armistice, November 1918, and contained in general, chronological order most of the stories that to children from ten to sixteen years of age would be' of greatest interest, and give the clearest understanding of the titanic contest. This, the second volume of the same series, contains the stories of the war of the character described, that were not included in Lest We Forget, stories of the United States naval heroes, of the Americans landed in France, of the concluding events of the war, of the visit of President Wilson to Europe, and of the Peace Conference. In a word, emphasis is placed upon America's part in the struggle. This volume should be of even greater interest to American children than the first, for it tells the story of America's greatest achievement, of a nation under taking a tremendous and terrible task not for material gain, but for an ideal. Book excerpt: The 1942 Japanese invasion of two of the Aleutian Islands, the thousand-milerchipelago west of Alaska, represents the only time in modern history thatmerican territory has been occupied by a foreign power. The ensuingifteen-month campaign, memorialised in John Huston's extraordinaryocumentary film, was 'the weirdest war ever waged': a terrible, elementalnd always three-sided battle, between the Americans, the Japanese and theeather. Frozen puddies of oil could be lifted like boards. Servicementurned summer clothing for fuel. Aircrews flew amidst icy rain, drivenpside-down by gales. The eventual liberation of the island of Attu wasecond only to Iwo Jima in the percentage of American casualties. Brianarfield's book, never before published in the UK, is the definitive historyf this 'Forgotten War'.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War to End Only When the Rebellion Ceases It is very little to our credit that we surpass the very best of foreign nations in morals and piety. We might as well boast of the larger products of our fat Western soil! The question for us is - and God is putting it now with fearful distinctness - are we in any fair degree equal in our morals and piety, as a people, to our talents, opportunities, and privileges? If we are not, we are sure to suffer by laws as inexorable as those that govern the stars in their courses. Privileges of all kinds involve relative responsibilities. Light must illumine or blind; liberty turn to law or license; knowledge expand or puff up; wealth refine or soften and betray. Religion, if it does not make saints, makes hypocrites or atheists! This American people must either be the best or the guiltiest people on God's earth. There is no middle place for it. Its gifts, endowments, historic and physical position, political, economical, educational, and religious circumstances and opportunities are, in character and sum, so vast, peculiar, emphatic, and providential, that they must either prove a mighty pedestal, lifting America to an unparalleled glory, or a stone of wrath, falling upon our heads and grinding us to powder. There can be no doubt that for five and twenty years past, to say the least, the American people have been making greater progress in every thing else rather than in morals and piety. They have advanced immensely in area, agriculture, manufactures, commerce, wealth, and power! The triumphs of their ships and their iron-roads, their canals and their intercommunications of all kind; the discovery of the mines of California; the invention of telegraphy; the vast growth of the planting interest - these have been kept full pace with by their improved systems of popular education; their rapid advances in the arts and sciences; in the application of machinery to tillage; in the extra ordinary improvement in the character, style, and comfort of dwellings, the architecture of public buildings, and the decoration of cities. Church-building itself, within that period, has made a notable improvement. Meanwhile, the popularization of music, of painting and sculpture, of photographic art, of landscape gardening, and rural cemeteries and public parks, has thrown a cultivated and refined air about our civilization, which has been similarly marked in costume and domestic elegance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War Since the President's proclamation of August 20, 1866, referring to the great rebellion, declared the, insurrection at an end, a vast number of those who were intelligent observers or actors in the events of that period have passed away, and a new generation of men has appeared on the stage of action. To them the rebellion and its stirring incidents are matters of history, of which they know nothing from observation, or from information acquired during that eventful period. Whatever will throw light on these must be of deep interest to thoughtful minds at present, and for all future time. They impart lessons, and are fraught with results, which should be understood by every citizen of the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World War: Who Is Responsible; Who Will Win; The Date It Will End, the United States of America Will Not Enter Conflict The red dragon is symbolical of emperialistic des potism which crushes individuality and personal priv ilege under the iron shod heel of militarism. It is the emblem of the Emperor of Germany. In the third verse above quoted, it is spoken of as having seven heads. These seven heads are identified as will be shown. Woman, the spirit of Liberty, has existed long and secretly among the people of king-ridden countries, but now in this age of broad enlightenment and education of the masses, has dared to show itself too menaceingly to the dragon, hence his watchfulness to destroy her offspring. Shall the world settle down to the faith that there is no redemption from an everlasting round of pride, war, poverty, peace, prosperity, pride, and war again? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonfiction master Russell Freedman illuminates for young readers the complex and rarely discussed subject of World War I. The tangled relationships and alliances of many nations, the introduction of modern weaponry, and top-level military decisions that resulted in thousands upon thousands of casualties all contributed to the "great war," which people hoped and believed would be the only conflict of its kind. In this clear and authoritative account, the Newbery Medal-winning author shows the ways in which the seeds of a second world war were sown in the first. Numerous archival photographs give the often disturbing subject matter a moving visual counterpart. Includes source notes, a bibliography, and an index.
