Book excerpt: Military history buffs and scholars will revel in Wiley Sword's exciting narrative, the first comprehensive history of the United States-Indian war of 1790-1795. The struggle for the Old Northwest Territory (modern-day Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan) was as vicious and bitter a conflict as any war in our history. Indeed, the very survival of the new nation was in doubt. The years from 1790 to 1795 may have been the turning point in Indian white relations on the North American continent. At this time the Indians of the Ohio country-tribes such as the Miamis, the Shawnees, and the Ottawas-engaged in a last-ditch effort to stop the settlers who were moving west into the "Black Forest" wilderness of mid America. They were aided by British agents, based in Detroit, who manipulated the Indian confederacy in an attempt to recoup some of their losses from the Revolutionary War. Josiah Harmar and Arthur St. Clair led early disastrous campaigns, including possibly the worst defeat of a United States army at the hands of Indians. Ultimately, President George Washington assigned "Mad Anthony" Wayne to rebuild and expand the army, despite considerable domestic opposition. This is the most detailed history yet published of the battles and skirmishes, the futile treaty negotiations with the Indians, and the tribes' intrigues among themselves and with the British, leading to Wayne's final victory 'over the Indian confederacy at Fallen Timbers. Most impressive is the extent and depth of the author's research in primary and secondary sources. With extraordinary vividness Sword recounts the battles and the life in the American and Indian encampments, quoting from diaries, letters, and statements by American officers and soldiers as well as the accounts of their enemies, such as Little Turtle of the Miamis, Blue Jacket of the Shawnees, and Joseph Brant of the Iroquois. Nor does Sword neglect the activities and life-ways of Britain's traders, agents, and haughty commandants.

Book excerpt: American history books often fail to give accolades to Native Americans, deciding rather to highlight colonial accomplishments while covering up the atrocities committed against the continent's first peoples. St. Clair's Defeat during the Northwest Indian War, known as the largest triumph for Native American forces against the United States Army, serves as an example. When the American Revolution ended, the United States and Britain reached an impressively comprehensive peace in the Treaty of Paris. Among the important terms of the treaty, Britain recognized the colonies as free and relinquished territorial claims to them. The two sides then negotiated the boundaries that separated the United States from the British colonies in present-day Canada. Additionally, the British and Americans strove to share certain waters, including the Mississippi River and the fishing waters off Newfoundland. Finally, the two sides made mutual promises regarding paying debts and returning property that had been confiscated during the war, including slaves...

Book excerpt: Eyewitnesses to the Indian Wars, 1865-1890: The Wars for the Pacific Northwest is the second in a planned five-volume series that will tell the saga of the military struggle for the American West in the words of the soldiers, noncombatants, and Native Americans who shaped it. Patterned after the classic Battles and Leaders of the Civil War, the series will represent the most comprehensive work on the Indian Wars in the West yet published. Volume II: The Wars for the Pacific Northwest covers five distinct conflicts and their aftermaths: The Snake-Paiute War and After (1866-72), The Modoc War (1872-73), The Nez Perce Campaign (1877), The Bannock War (1878), and The Sheepeater Campaign (1879). It contains accounts from participants on both sides of the conflict, including George Crook, Charles King, and Nelson A. Miles, as well as Chuslum Moxmox (Yellow Bull), Young Two Moon, and Heinmot Tooyalakekt (Chief Joseph).

Book excerpt: St. Clair, Governor of the Northwest Territory, remarks on war with the Indians: In my public letter of this day I have taken the Liberty to mention my Ideas on the manner in which a War should be carried on against the Indians- I do most sincerely wish it may not be necessary tho were it not for the State of public affairs, it would be both more reputable and little more expensive than the present dubious situation, when presents must be made them, and expenses incurred that would go a good Way in a Campaign against them, and, were it conducted with prudence and vigor would, set us at rest. Comments on the military leadership needed to launch a campaign against the Indians: ... if the Ragamuffins of Militia are to command, I have seen few in my life that would be fit for it... it is of very great Consequence that the Government get into motion with as few external embarrassments as possible. Refers to the qualifications of key military leaders in the west, such as General [Josiah] Harmar, [John] Doughty, and [John] Hamtramck. Praises Alexander Hamilton. Discusses the possibility of gaining more land for the Territory in the future.
