Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War Book Many of our homes must furnish their young men for the army and navy. This involves a large sacrifice and we may depend upon such homes to do all that they can to assist their boys in accomplishing a victory. Everyone, however, must be led to be equally willing to sacrifice for the country's welfare. This can only come about when our boys and girls and their parents come to understand and appreciate the fact that this war is not the concern of any class or group. When we are called upon to endure inconveniences in order that we may save food or fuel it is not for the purpose of helping a food or fuel administrator who may be located in Washington or in our state capital. It is, first of all, to assure that Vermont boys and others who have been called to the colors shall have proper food and sufficient equipment, and then to assist in preventing the starvation of those people who are fighting with us in this great cause. It is therefore necessary for everyone to know how our armies are raised and cared for. We should also understand why we must produce and conserve every possible bit of food and fuel. This book has been written for the sole purpose of furnishing this information to Vermont boys and girls. Its purpose is merely to gather in concise form the more significant phases of the war, so that these may be taught in the schools of Texas. A heavy responsibility rests upon all teachers in our present crisis, for their instruction will have great in uence upon the opinions of their pupils. Amid the bitterness and hatred that war develops, it becomes increasingly necessary for as many people as possible to keep clearly in mind the main issues of this con ict. Disloyalty and intrigue are abroad, and Ameri cans should one and all so understand our part in this war that no doubt or faintheartedness can turn us aside from what we have undertaken to do. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and America This book discusses the essential factors and issues in the European war and their meaning and import for America. The hour for an im personal account of the war has certainly not yet come, and may not come for a long while. What our time can contribute is the reflection of the great war in the minds of individuals. A story of memories and impressions, of fears and hopes, has to-day more inner truth than any history of the struggle apparently written with an historian 's coolness. This diary, therefore, views the events as they unfold themselves from week to week, from the angle of personal experiences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the World War IT is impossible in a small volume to write the history of the World War in even a partially exhaustive manner. Nor is that the Object of the book. Rather than to deal with generalities, its purpose is to describe separate events of which I had intimate knowledge, and individuals with whom I came into close contact and could, therefore, Observe closely; in fact, to furnish a series of snapshots of the great drama. By this means the following pages may possibly pre sent a conception of the war as a whole, which may, nevertheless, differ in many respects from the hitherto recorded, and possibly faulty, history of the war. Every one regards people and events from his own point of View; it is inevitable. In my book, I speak of men with whom I was in Close touch; of others who crossed my path without leaving any personal im pression on me; and finally, of men with whom I was Often in grave dispute. I endeavor to judge of them all in Objective fashion, but I have to describe people and things as I saw them. Wherever the description appears to be at fault, the reason will not be due to a prematurely formed opinion, but rather, probably, to a prevailing lack Of the capacity for judging. Not everything could be revealed. Much was not explained, although it could have been. Too short a period still separates us from those events to justify the lifting of the veil from all that happened. But what remains unspoken can in no way change the whole picture which I describe exactly as imprinted on my mind. Book excerpt: There are two ways of looking at the war: one as a journalist, the other as a theologian. The journalist tells you what happens; the theologian not only why it happens, but also what matters. If we look at this war through the eyes of a journalist or a commentator, it will he only a succession of events without any remote causes in the past, or any great purpose in the future. But if we look at the war through the eyes of God, then the war is not meaningless, though we may not presently understand its details. It may very well be a purposeful purging of the world’s evil that the world may have a rebirth of freedom under His Holy Law, for: Every human path leads on to God, He holds a myriad finer threads than gold, And strong as holy wishes, drawing us With delicate tension upward to Himself. Our approach is from the divine point of view, first of all, because it is the only explanation which fits the facts; secondly because the American people who have been confused by catchwords and slogans are seeking an inspiration for a total surrender of their great potentialities for sacrifice, both for God and country. The great mass of the American people are frankly dissatisfied with the ephemeral and superficial commentaries on what is happening. Being endowed with intelligence, they want to know why it is happening. We all know what we are fighting against; we want to know what we are fighting for. We all know that we are in a war; we want to know what we must do to make a lasting peace. We know whom we hate; but we want to know what we ought to love. We know we are fighting against a barbarism that is intrinsically wicked; we want to know what we have to do to make the resurrection of that wickedness impossible.
