Book excerpt: "I'm obsessed with abandoned things." Siena's obsession began a year and a half ago, around the time her two-year-old brother Lucca stopped talking. Now Mom and Dad are moving the family from Brooklyn to Maine hoping that it will mean a whole new start for Lucca and Siena. She soon realizes that their wonderful old house on the beach holds secrets. When Siena writes in her diary with an old pen she found in her closet, the pen writes its own story, of Sarah and Joshua, a brother and sister who lived in the same house during World War II. As the two stories unfold, amazing parallels begin to appear, and Siena senses that Sarah and Joshua's story might contain the key to unlocking Lucca's voice.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author of Secret Service Dogs and Soldier Dogs delivers the incredible, true story of K-9 Marine hero Lucca, and the handlers who fought alongside her through two bloody wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. "Maria Goodavage knocks it out of the park in this fast paced, spell binding page turner" --John W. Pilley, co-author of Chaser: Unlocking the Genius of the Dog Who Knows a Thousand Words Maria Goodavage takes readers into the life of Lucca K458, a decorated and highly skilled military working dog. An extraordinary bond develops between Lucca and Marine Corps dog handlers Chris Willingham and Juan Rodriguez, in what would become a legendary 400-mission career. A specialized search dog, Lucca belongs to an elite group trained to work off-leash at long distances from her handler to sniff out deadly explosives. She served alongside both Special Forces and regular infantry, and became so sought-after that platoons frequently requested her by name. Here, in gritty detail, is the gripping account of Lucca's adventures on and off the battlefields, including tense, lifesaving explosives finds and rooftop firefights, as well as the bravery of fellow handlers and dogs they served with. Ultimately we see how the bond between Lucca and her handlers overcame the endless brutalities of war and the traumas such violence can inflict. Top Dog is a portrait of modern warfare with a heartwarming and inspiring conclusion that will touch dog lovers and the toughest military readers.

Download or read book Altared written by Kyle Tackwell Ball and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Kyle Tackwell Ball’s search for a quaint country home near Florence, Italy, in move-in condition somehow led to the purchase of an abandoned church in a small borgo near Greve-in-Chianti called Le Convertoie, she ended up with much more than a project to overcome her newly contracted “empty nest syndrome.” Ball soon found herself starring in a “Stones and Bones Classic”; the ruin she’d purchased would require years of renovation and an endless amount of money before it would become habitable. But her journey had unexpected rewards, too: she reconnected with some wonderful friends, made new ones, learned the language of her newly adopted home country, and became experienced in the Italian knack of getting around the system. Most importantly, she learned to appreciate Italian culture, food and wine, and how rewarding it is to give new life to a beautiful old building. Ball’s renovation was featured in the March 2010 “Before & After” issue of Architectural Digest, beautifully documented by Kim Sargent of Sargent Architectural Photography.

CHAPTER IX The Churches, Walls, and Towers of Lucca "lo vidi Santa Zita, e il Volto Santo Ed udii come, al priego di Frediano II Serchio s'era volta dall' un canto." Fazio Degli Uberti, Distamondo, lib. iii. cap. vi. in. ' Approaching unto it, it looked like a pure Low Country Town with its Brick Walls, large ramparts set round with Trees, and deep Moats round about the Walls, It hath eleven Bastions well guarded by the Townsmen, and well furnished with Cannons of a large size." Richard Lassels, Gent. The Voyage of Italy, lz$ (1670). "'"THE very walls are more eloquent than the men of other States," says Erasmus of Italy, and his words can be applied with perfect fitness to the basilica of S. Frediano. No other church in Lucca can approach it in architectural beauty or historical interest. It stands very happily in an open space near the walls on the most picturesque side of the city, and one could not desire a more beautiful vision than that of its majestic campanile and severe apse framed in the branches of the plane trees on the ramparts. So straight and lofty is the campanile that it actually seems to shoot up into the sky like an arrow, and gives a welcome touch of the imaginative to the rather prosaic little town. Seen from the other side it betrays a singular and rather sprawling facade--simple in its design as an early Christian basilica--with an unusually lofty gable and extremely wide aisles. The whole surface is divided into five panels by flat pilasters, and the ornamentation is of the simplest. Besides the great mosaic in the gable with a single row of columns beneath it there is little to break the monotony but a few pointed and round windows, and the three doorways with stilted arches and fine reliefs of foliage on the...
