Book Synopsis Variations in Abundance of Walleyes, Stizostedion Vitreum Vitreum (Mitchell), in Cedar and Moose Lakes, Manitoba by : A. J. Derksen
Download or read book Variations in Abundance of Walleyes, Stizostedion Vitreum Vitreum (Mitchell), in Cedar and Moose Lakes, Manitoba written by A. J. Derksen and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the summers of 1962 to 1964, experimental gill netting was conducted in Cedar and Moose Lakes, Manitoba. The age structure of walleyes caught in 9.5 and 10.8 cm experimental nets was examined to determine relative strengths of year classes in both populations. Age compositions of additional samples from the commercial fisheries on both lakes were also examined. Year classes were ranked in order of relative frequency of occurrence in the experimental catches. Estimates of year class strength for each population were correlated with annual fluctuations in walleye catches of the commercial fisheries six years after hatching. Strengths of year classes in Cedar and Moose Lakes were positively correlated with spring discharges from the Saskatchewan River during the first year of life of the year classes. This relationship was best for Cedar Lake walleyes in June and for Moose Lake walleyes in April. The manner in which high discharges may have promoted the success of walleye year classes is discussed. The future abundance of Cedar and Moose Lakes walleyes might be predicted on the basis of observations of spring discharges from the Saskatchewan River. Such information would permit effective management of the commercial walleye fisheries on these lakes.

Book Synopsis Tilapias: Biology and Exploitation by : M.C.M Beveridge
Download or read book Tilapias: Biology and Exploitation written by M.C.M Beveridge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Referred to in the Bible, pictured on the wall-friezes of ancient Egyptian tombs, and a subject of fascination for generations of scientists, the tilapias (Cichlidae: Tilapiini) have featured in the diet and culture of humankind for thousands of years. The present century has seen their spread from Africa throughout the tropics and sub-tropics, largely for food and fisheries purposes. This book attempts to pull together our knowledge of this important group - their biology and fisheries and aquaculture - in a single volume, something that has not been done comprehensively for nearly two decades. A succession of chapters by acknowledged authorities covers evolution, phylogenetic relationships and biogeography, reproductive biology, mating systems and parental care, diet, feeding and digestive physiology, environmental physiology and energetics, the role of tilapias in ecosystems, population dynamics and management, genetics, seed production, nutrition, farming, economics and marketing. The book is aimed at biologists, fisheries scientists, aquaculturists, and all interested in aquatic ecology.
Download or read book The Fry Site written by David M. Stothers and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2006-12-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fry site (33Lu165) was an Ottawa (Odawa) farmstead on the lower Maumee River of Ohio that existed A.D. 1814-1832. Excavations revealed an Ottawa bark burial with trade goods, a cabin or shack, and an animal pen or compound. The material culture consisted of a wide variety of Native and Euro-American manufactured artifacts, including trade silver. The bark burial with trade goods is dated A.D. 1780-1809, slightly earlier than the farmstead occupation. The farmstead is connected with the Roche de Boeuf and Wolf Rapids bands of Ottawa that were removed to Kansas Territory in 1832. The Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma are the descendants of these Maumee River Ottawa.
Book Synopsis Copepods in Aquaculture by : Cheng-Sheng Lee

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of copepods in aquaculture has long been recognized, especially in the larval rearing of many marine fishes. This timely publication provides a single source of information on copepod biology, culture methods and practical use in marine finfish hatcheries. Originating out of a workshop held on copepods by the Oceanic Institute in Hawaii, this proceedings includes review articles and papers presented by leading international experts in copepod biology and aquaculture. It is a seminal work that integrates the most up-to-date information on selecting copepod species, effects of algal species on reproduction, ways to increase production, the nutritional value of copepods, behavioral characteristics of copepods, potential use of copepod nauplii and eggs, and their application to larval rearing of various marine finfish species.
