Book excerpt: Certain species considered provincially rare in the Lake Simcoe watershed including some listed as threatened or endangered under Ontario's Endangered Species Act (Statutes of Ontario 2007), may be at risk of extirpation due to adverse effects of natural and/or anthropogenic stressors. Climate change, acting alone or in combination with other stressors, may pose an important emerging threat for many of these species. Several tools to assess climate change effects are being developed for use by resource managers to categorize the relative vulnerability of selected species to climate change. In response to the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan, Ontario's Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan: 2011-2014, and the Ministry of Natural Resources' Climate Change Strategy, vulnerability assessments have been completed for selected natural assests in the Lake Simcoe watershed. By testing the model against a subset of high priority provincially rare species found within the Lake Simcoe watershed the authors objectives were to: categorize the relative vulnerability of each species; identify species-level indicators that are useful for assessing vulnerability to climate change; identify the key factors causing species vulnerability.--Document.

Book excerpt: In this report, the authors document the development and application of a vulnerability assessment that can be used with other tools and techniques to assess wildlife vulnerabilities to climate change and inform an adaptive strategic planning process. The authors selected four wildlife indicators to assess the ecological condition of the Lake Simcoe Watershed and to identify potential vulnerabilities to climate change and land use practices. The four indicators are avian guild species richness, anuran calling and breeding phenology, mammal species richness, and landscape fragmentation. These indicators were selected because they describe local biodiversity, community and range boundary dynamics, population size, and landscape fragmentation all of which are affected by or interact with climate to influence wildlife populations.--Document.

Book excerpt: "Climate change presents several challenges to planners and those responsible for managing natural heritage areas and providing nature-based recreational opportunities. We explore the vulnerability of natural heritage areas and nature-based recreation to climate change in the Lake Simcoe watershed in two ways. First, we examine the vulnerability of natural heritage areas to climate change using habitat projections for selected tree species. Second, we explore the vulnerability of nature-based tourism to climate change using ice fishing, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, and snowmobiling season lengths and provincial park visitation patterns."--publisher.

Reflecting these purposes, Environment and Climate Change Canada is developing a suite of SARA policies to support its implementation of the Act and its provisions. The suite of policies is being shaped by the following guiding principles ..."--p. 1.

In Canada, has been found only rarely in lakes Erie and Ontario. This report provides information on the fish's geographic distribution, protection status, and population sizes and trends. It concludes with an evaluation of the future of the species in Canada and a recommended conservation designation.

Surface water temperatures of the Great Lakes, inland lakes and streams are on the rise, water levels are in decline, and the composition of plant and animal communities in wetlands are changing. The objectives of this study were to assess the vulnerability of different indicators; wetland vulnerability to drying, wetland bird species habitat, stream temperatures, stream thermal habitat, inland lake surface temperatures, and walleye biomass, to inform the development of a climate change adaptation strategy for aquatic ecosystems within the GLB of Ontario. Climate models forecast a 4 to 6 degrees C warming of mean annual air temperatures and regional changes in precipitation by the end of the century."--Summary.

Book excerpt: COSEWIC determines the national status of wild species, subspecies, varieties, or other designatable units that are considered to be at risk in Canada. This report presents the Committee's status designations on native species including the following taxonomic groups: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, arthropods, mollusks, and plants. The report includes summary tables as well as tables in the following categories: species with designated status, current geographical occurrence & date listed; species examined & designated in the not at risk category; and species examined & designated in the data deficient category because of insufficient scientific information. It also provides a short history of each species that has been reassessed by COSEWIC and a record of changes in common & scientific names of species.
