This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puerto Rico, Hawai'i, and California share the experiences of conquest and annexation to the United States in the nineteenth century and mass organizational struggles by rural workers in the twentieth. Organized Agriculture and the Labor Movement before the UFW offers a comparative examination of those struggles, which were the era's longest and most protracted campaigns by agricultural workers, supported by organized labor, to establish a collective presence and realize the fruits of democracy. Dionicio Nodín Valdés examines critical links between the earlier conquests and the later organizing campaigns while he corrects a number of popular misconceptions about agriculture, farmworkers, and organized labor. He shows that agricultural workers have engaged in continuous efforts to gain a place in the institutional life of the nation, that unions succeeded before the United Farm Workers and César Chávez, and that the labor movement played a major role in those efforts. He also offers a window into understanding crucial limitations of institutional democracy in the United States, and demonstrates that the widespread lack of participation in the nation's institutions by agricultural workers has not been due to a lack of volition, but rather to employers' continuous efforts to prevent worker empowerment. Organized Agriculture and the Labor Movement before the UFW demonstrates how employers benefitted not only from power and wealth, but also from imperialism in both its domestic and international manifestations. It also demonstrates how workers at times successfully overcame growers' advantages, although they were ultimately unable to sustain movements and gain a permanent institutional presence in Puerto Rico and California.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have always made major contributions to the success of agribusiness and farm operations, but until now there has been little scholarship on the business characteristics, roles, and organizations and activities of farm women in farms and ranches in the United States. This is the first study to deal with farm women as entrepreneurs. Its focus is on demographic and entrepreneurial characteristics, opportunities of leadership and networking provided through the agricultural, business, and community organizations to which the women belonged. The author developed and administered a questionnaire to over 1,000 statistically-selected individuals from three national agricultural women's organizations. The basic design of this unique study was to explore the literature from both a historical and a contemporary perspective on entrepreneurship, on women as entrepreneurs, and on farm women, and then gather primary data from a national survey of farm women. This study compares the characteristics of farm women with non-farm women entrepreneurs. Based on the findings, recommendations are made to policymakers and economic development specialists with interest in entrepreneurship, revitalization of rural America, and women's studies. Historical information is presented on women's organizations, their leaders, and the impact of these organizations; and major federal legislation impacting women and women business owners is provided in the appendices.

One of its most compelling stories is the New Farmers of America (NFA), which was a national organization of Black farm boys studying vocational agriculture in the public schools throughout 18 states in the eastern and southern United States from 1927 to 1965. The organization was started at the suggestion of Dr. H.O. Sargent, federal agent for agricultural education for Blacks, who felt the time was ripe for an organization of Black agricultural students. Operating within the auspices of the Separate but Equal Doctrine, the NFA started at Virginia State University in May 1927 with a few chapters and members and concluded in 1965 with more than 1,000 chapters and more than 58,000 active members, merging with the Future Farmers of America (FFA) as a result of the Civil Rights Act of 1964."--Back cover.
