Harper and Anthony Walton present the definitive collection of black verse in the United States--200 years of vision, struggle, power, beauty, and triumph from 52 outstanding poets. From the neoclassical stylings of slave-born Phillis Wheatley to the wistful lyricism of Paul Lawrence Dunbar . . . the rigorous wisdom of Gwendolyn Brooks...the chiseled modernism of Robert Hayden...the extraordinary prosody of Sterling A. Brown...the breathtaking, expansive narratives of Rita Dove...the plaintive rhapsodies of an imprisoned Elderidge Knight . . . The postmodern artistry of Yusef Komunyaka. Here, too, is a landmark exploration of lesser-known artists whose efforts birthed the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts movements--and changed forever our national literature and the course of America itself. Meticulously researched, thoughtfully structured, The Vintage Book of African-American Poetry is a collection of inestimable value to students, educators, and all those interested in the ever-evolving tradition that is American poetry.

The mystery of sacred places, The beauty of gigantic spaces, The vast and gorgeous house the Jew Had builded for the God he knew, The God of battle and of wrath Who scattered nations in His path But to whose furies would suffice The piteous blood of sacrifice! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vision of Judgement It hath been wisely said, that "One fool makes many;" and it hath been poetically observed, "That fools rush in, where angels fear to tread !" If Mr. Southey had not rushed in where he had no business, and where he never was before, and never will be again, the following poem would not have been written. Is it not impossible that it may be as good as his own, seeing that it cannot, by any species of stupidity, natural or acquired, be worse. The gross flattery, the dull impudence, the renegado intolerance, and impious cant of the poem by the author of Wat Tyler, are something so stupendous, as to form the sublime of himself - containing the quintessence of his own attributes. So much for his poem - a word or two on his preface. (a) In this preface it has pleased the magnanimous Laureate to draw the picture of a supposed "Satanic School," the which he doth recommend to the notice of the legislature, thereby adding to his other laurels the ambition of those of an informer. If there exists any where, excepting in his imagination, such a school, is he not sufficiently armed against it by his own intense vanity? The truth is, that there are certain writers whom Mr. S. imagines, like Scrub, to have "talked of him; for they laughed consumedly." I think I know enough of most of the writers to whom he is supposed to allude, to assert, that they, in their individual capacities, have done more good in the charities of life to their fellow creatures in any one year, than Mr. Southey has done harm to himself by his absurdities in his whole life; and this is saying a great deal. But I have a few questions to ask. 1st. Is Mr. Southey the author of Wat Tyler? 2ndly. Was he not refused a remedy at law by the highest judge of his beloved England, because it was a blasphemous and seditious publication? (b) 3rdly. Was he not entitled by William Smith, in full parliament, "a rancorous renegado?" (c) 4thly. Is he not poet laureate, with his own lines on Martin the regicide, staring him in the face? (d) And, 5thly. Putting the four preceding items together, with what conscience dare he call the attention of the laws to the publications of others, be they what they may? I say nothing of the cowardice of such a proceeding; its meanness speaks for itself, but I wish to touch upon the motive, which is neither more nor less, than that Mr. S. has been laughed at a little in some recent publications, as he was of yore in the "Antijacobin" by his present patrons. Hence all this "skimble scamble stuff" about "Satanic" and so forth. However, it is worthy of him - "Qualis A B Incepto." If there is anything obnoxious to the political opinions of a portion of the public, in the following poem, they may thank Mr. Southey. He might have written hexameters, as he has written everything else, for aught that the writer cared, had they been upon another subject. But to attempt to canonize a monarch, who, whatever were his household virtues, was neither a successful nor a patriot king inasmuch, as several years of his reign passed in war with America and Irelaud, to say nothing of the aggression upon France, - like all other exaggeration, necessarily begets opposition. In whatever manner he may be spoken of in this new "Vision," his public career will not be more favourably transmitted by history. Of his private virtues (although a little expensive to the nation) there can be no doubt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heaven and Hell: Or, a Vision of the Judgement Day, From an Orthodox Standpoint This little poem, written years ago, not for publication, but supply as an outburst of thought, upon the all-important subject of Heaven and Hell, or Man's Final Destiny - written when it was almost considered Treason against the law of Almighty God to let the light of reason shine upon the sacred pages of the Bible - written when the horrible terrors of the law were sounded from nearly every sactuary in the land, when the lash of tyranny was held daily over the heads of the people by satin-robed priests and broad-clothed clergy, commanding a feigned respect and obedience to a God whose character and designs they dared not question or try to investigate, lest they be considered Heretics or Lunatics; and not wishing to be branded as either, save a few public and parlor readings, I have kept my production incoy. But now, since this great tidal wave of freedom of thought and speech has come sweeping over the world, washing out the old ruts of prejudice and superstition. I have been induced to launch my little bark upon its waters. And I do it with a consciousness that if there is anything contained in these simple rhymes that will throw the least light upon this still dark and mysterious subject, I have no right to longer "hide them under a bushel." For, I believe, if we have one thing above another which we can call our own, it is our reasoning faculties. And, I also believe that it is a sin against our Maker not to exercise them to the fullest extent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vision of the Ages: An Epic Poem There is only one true gospel - the gospel of Jesus Christ. All others are counterfeit. During the course of time, this gospel received various shades of interpretation. To show the fallacy of these and to state the correct one, consistent with Revelation, is the duty of this volume. That the word gospel means "good news of great joy" no one of common intelligence will dispute. But to whom, according to present day theology, is it good news? Only to a few - the little flock. The rest of the world, is left in judgment to eternal torture. The theory of conscious suffering after death, seems to be so tenaciously held by many professing Christians, that it blots out of their minds the beauty of Gods character and the simplicity of his plan for the worlds redemption. The true gospel is incompatible with the doctrine of eternal torment. Is God mocking us? Has he proclaimed to the world good news of great joy, but instead is sending men to a place of torment to satisfy his fierce wrath and anger? O what a devilish thought! How men can entertain it and call themselves humane beings, is inconceivable. What we need above all else to-day, is a diligent search for truth, regardless of its cost. How can we get it? Only thro Revelation. Christ said: "Thy Word is truth." But what is that Word? The science and the only true science which solves the problem of redemption. Truth then, being Gods Word, is science. When we desire to study the divine science, we must lay aside all preconceived ideas and theological traditions, and approach in the spirit of humility for the ground upon which we are standing is holy and cannot be profaned by man-made theories.
