This book was released on 1998-02-04 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 101. High pressure-tempertatur research is vital to understanding the formation and evolution of the Earth and planetary interiors. Recent advances in research techniques have enabled mineral physicists to simulate conditions prevailing throughout the Earth's interior. This volume presents new laboratory data as well as geophysical and geochemical field observations and their implications describing the nature and composition of the Earth and planetary interiors. These advances in state-of-the-art high pressure-temperature research and applications will interest mineral physicists, petrologists, geochemists, and planetologists.

Book Synopsis Volcanic Seismology by : Paolo Gasparini
Download or read book Volcanic Seismology written by Paolo Gasparini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many centuries people living on volcanoes have known that the outset of seismic activity is often a forerunner of a volcanic eruption. This understand ing allowed people living close to the sites of the Mt. Nuovo 1538 eruption at Campi Flegrei, Italy, and of the Mt. Usu 1663 eruption, in Hokkaido, Japan (to quote only two examples) to flee before the eruptions started. During the second half of the 19th century seismographs were installed on some volcanoes, and the link between seismic and eruptive activity started to be assessed on a firmer scientific basis. The first systematic observations of the correlations existing between seismic activity and volcanic eruptions were probably those carried out at Mt. Vesuvius by Luigi Palmieri in 1856. Palmieri was the Director of Osservatorio Vesuviano and built an electromagnetic seismograph with the aim of "making visible the smallest ground motions by recording them on paper and indicating direction, intensity and duration". He was able to show the relationship between earthquakes and the different phases of volcanic activity. He identified the harmonic tremor which he indicated was a precursor of volcanic activity: "the characteristic feature of the ground mo tions preceding eruption is its continuity . . . (before the eruption of 1861) the electromagnetic seismograph began to show a continuous tremor". The Palmieri seismograph was also utilized in Japan until 1883, when it was replaced by the new Gray-Milne seismographs, and, later, by the Omori in struments.
Book Synopsis Mass Transport in Magmatic Systems by : Bjorn Mysen
Download or read book Mass Transport in Magmatic Systems written by Bjorn Mysen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2022-10-09 with total page 908 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mass Transport in Magmatic Systems describes the properties and processes of these natural occurrences, including a description and discussions of how properties can be used for quantitative description of mass and energy transport on, and in, Earth and terrestrial planets. As the experimentally obtained chemical and physical properties of magma is scattered across literature, this book provides a comprehensive volume on the topic. Moreover, links between properties and processes are rarely appreciated. This makes it challenging for a non-experimentalist to access, evaluate, and apply such data. - Incorporates information from a range of subdisciplines, from materials science to geology, geophysics and geochemistry - Highlights links between properties and processes of magmatic systems - Presents chapters that can stand on their own, with practical applications and a section for non-expert readers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 26 of Reviews in Mineralogy provides a multidisciplinary review of our current knowledge of contact metamorphism. As in any field of endeavor, we are provided with new questions, thereby dictating future directions of study. Hopefully, this volume will provide inspiration and direction for future research on contact metamorphism. The Mineralogical Society of America sponsored the short course on Contact Metamorphism, October 17-19, 1991, at the Pala Mesa Resort, Fallbrook, California, prior to its annual meeting with the Geological Society of America.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Structural Geology by : David D. Pollard
Download or read book Fundamentals of Structural Geology written by David D. Pollard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-01 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Structural Geology provides a new framework for the investigation of geological structures by integrating field mapping and mechanical analysis. Assuming a basic knowledge of physical geology, introductory calculus and physics, it emphasizes the observational data, modern mapping technology, principles of continuum mechanics, and the mathematical and computational skills, necessary to quantitatively map, describe, model, and explain deformation in Earth's lithosphere. By starting from the fundamental conservation laws of mass and momentum, the constitutive laws of material behavior, and the kinematic relationships for strain and rate of deformation, the authors demonstrate the relevance of solid and fluid mechanics to structural geology. This book offers a modern quantitative approach to structural geology for advanced students and researchers in structural geology and tectonics. It is supported by a website hosting images from the book, additional colour images, student exercises and MATLAB scripts. Solutions to the exercises are available to instructors.
