Book excerpt: 2083 AD From the ashes of Earth to the terrifying murk of Cygnus Space, there is no escaping the Viridian Path. In a time of exploration and human ingenuity, mankind languishes captive to the Path's galactic web of tyranny, trapped behind Walls built as much from scorn as from synthetic concrete. To flee the enforced collective is to be hunted to the end of the Galaxy by the Federal Government's coldblooded Reclamation Army. On New America, while the Galaxy's ruling family plays god, their cloned son, Alex Halder, risks everything to bring an end to the Path's ruthless control. Employing the help of an insane Senator and an eclectic band of Freedom Fighters, Alex races to overthrow the Viridian Path even as a Chinese collection armada closes in on America's crumbling capital in search of money the establishment long ago spent. Eternally desperate for other people's money, President Quarterback and the elites of the Path wield cyborgs, trial lawyers and other agents of evil in a bid to maintain absolute power. As Senator Jack Wheeler fights his way back to Earth for a showdown with Washington's elite machine, Alex Halder learns the terrifying truth of the mysterious Kalban people and the sweeping Cygnus Sickness following them from the Void. A captive of his bureaucratic family and consumed by doubt for humanity's salvation, Alex Halder is haunted by the memory of a young girl he has never met and believes he has discovered the source of all human misery.

Book excerpt: Ngacida opposes unity of South Sudan with Sudan because he believed that Arabs are gadabout people with a grim language that would not be understood or learned properly. He fears that unity with Arabs will discourage teaching of English language and encourage their civilization. He opposes unity of the people by opting to train young men in ox ploughing and other menial works such as cobbling, gunsmithing, wrestling among others. Jabbari from Arab tribe heard about Ngacida and travels to South Sudan from Mujlad city in Kordofan along with his companions with a pious aim of coming to make unity of the people attractive. He believes that the country would be easily united into one but skin color, underdevelopment of South Sudan as well as carnage carried out by the imperial soldiers hinders his proposal for unity of the country. After grasping failure in his proposal, he travels to Nyaga village to establish Arabic schools because he felt that it would be easy for him to expand his unionist ideas using the language which he would teach himself. Ngacida stood up and opposed this and any formal education system by encouraging young men of Nyaga village to become cattle keepers and use bulls for farming which he calls community education system where every man goes to the farm on a communal basis which they called kutkut in Dinka. He demobilized and mobilized young men from attending formal education system through his friend his majesty chief Ngueng who was later elected as a community leader after defeating commander Yak in a very tied traditional election. Jabbari grew annoyed because of this development resulting into dissension, strife, and discord between the two sides. Imperial soldiers went to the side of Jabbari while those of John Igga, Capt. Paul and Sergeant Deng went along side Ngacida and caused unbearable conflict in the country.

Book excerpt: "El Paso artist Tom Lea was commissioned by Life Magazine to paint the war as it was being experienced by U.S. and Allied soldiers, sailors, and airmen. Along with his sketchbook, Lea carried on these assignments his "record of work", a notebook in which he recorded observations and details on the images he hoped to create from the events he had seen." "Brendan M. Greeley, Jr. has collected virtually all of Tom Lea's firsthand accounts of his assignments for Life, along with his powerful sketches and unforgettable paintings, and placed them in context, along with photographs and research focusing on the people, places, and wartime events encountered by Tom Lea. Drawing on previously unpublished sources - the artist's diary, letters to the Texas historian J. Frank. Dobie, oral interviews, and archival materials from Texas and national collections - Greeley presents in The Two Thousand Yard Stare a uniquely comprehensive and sustained treatment of Lea's creative accomplishments during World War II." "This well-documented and astonishingly illustrated volume will fascinate those interested in the realistic depiction of war, in both images and words. Also a must-read for students, scholars, and collectors of the artist's work, The Two Thousand Yard Stare: Tom Lea's World War II is a brilliant compendium of the work and thought of one of America's most compelling painters and writers."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Trevor Chamberlain's watercolour paintings are a celebration of light and atmosphere, and his skill in painting directly from nature to capture the mood of his subjects has earned him an enviable reputation among both amateur and professional artists. Here Trevor Chamberlain offers a fascinating glimpse over his shoulder as he describes his approach to interpreting the effects of light and weather using the limited watercolourist's palette. Mood in nature is his constant source of inspiration and his favoured subjects are marine, town and landscape. He particularly enjoys capturing the transient aspects of the English weather but he has also travelled extensively and enjoys the challenge of confronting the unfamiliar light and surroundings in exotic locations such as Egypt, Iran and India. An artist of the plein air tradition, he always paints directly from nature at first hand, an approach which he enthusiastically recommends to readers of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic later novel by Anna Kavan. A largely autobiographical account of an unhappy childhood, this daring synthesis of memoir and surrealist experimentation chronicles the subject's gradual withdrawal from the daylight world of received reality. Brief flashes of daily experience from childhood, adolescence, and youth are described in what is defined as "nighttime language"—a heightened, decorative prose that frees these events from their gloomy associations. The novel suggests we have all spoken this dialect in childhood and in our dreams, but these thoughts can only be sharpened or decoded by contemplation in the dark. Revealing that side of life which is never seen by the waking eye but which dreams and drugs can suddenly emphasize, this startling discovery illustrates how these nighttime illuminations reveal the narrator's joy for the living world.
