Book Synopsis Historic Sites in Virginia's Northern Neck and Essex County by : Thomas A. Wolf
Download or read book Historic Sites in Virginia's Northern Neck and Essex County written by Thomas A. Wolf and published by Preservation Virginia. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historic Sites in Virginia's Northern Neck and Essex County is an indispensible guide for those who have an active or potential interest in the rich history of the Northern Neck region of Virginia and its historic sites. This six-county Tidewater region includes the birthplaces of George Washington, James Madison, James Monroe, and Robert E. Lee. The guide includes a brief history of the region beginning with the exploratory voyages of Captain John Smith up the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers in 1608, and his encounters with various local Native American tribes. The 460 historic sites described here range from grand plantations such as Stratford Hall, to the modest early homes of middling planters, to early churches, schools, and courthouses. Most of these sites still exist, but some "lost" sites are also included because of their historical significance, and as reminders of the continuing need for active preservation efforts. The book contains 445 photos together with 36 maps showing the location of these historic sites. The general cutoff date for inclusion was the Civil War, but the guide contains descriptions of some later sites as well, including many early African American schools and churches, and important sites involving the steamboat and fishing industries. Distributed for Preservation Virginia, Northern Neck Branch

Book Synopsis The Architecture of Historic Rockbridge by : J. Daniel Pezzoni
Download or read book The Architecture of Historic Rockbridge written by J. Daniel Pezzoni and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This abundantly illustrated, wide-ranging volume captures the rich and diverse architectural history of Rockbridge County, Virginia, including the two cities of Lexington and Buena Vista. While recent books have documented the area's social history, this book fills a long-recognized void by tracing the area's architectural heritage, from the eighteenth century to the post-World War II period. Beginning with early log and stone structures on what was once Virginia's frontier, the discussion moves on to the brick construction of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries that produced some of the finest Federal homes in the Valley of Virginia. The book covers the many styles that would follow, often with their own vernacular interpretation. T he Architecture of Historic Rockbridge is an enormously useful companion to The Architecture of Historic Lexington, itself an invaluable resource now for forty years. Including discussions of towns, schools, churches, resorts, and industrial buildings, the new volume will satisfy the scholarly, while presenting architectural analysis in an engaging manner accessible to a general readership. The book is richly illustrated throughout, with over two hundred color and black-and-white photographs (including the work of internationally recognized photographer Sally Mann), line drawings, and historic maps. Distributed for the Historic Lexington Foundation

Book Synopsis The Making of Virginia Architecture by : Charles E. Brownell
Download or read book The Making of Virginia Architecture written by Charles E. Brownell and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long tradition of architecture in Virginia begins with the earliest structures at the Jamestown settlement in 1607, and continues today with some of the most advanced buildings yet completed anywhere. In its legendary landmarks -- Mount Vernon, Monticello, the Virginia Capitol building in Richmond, the James River plantation mansions, the Reynolds Metals headquarters building in Richmond, Washington National Airport, and Dulles International Airport -- as well as in homes, churches, stores, and office buildings across the state, Virginia's architecture is a mirror of the many expressions of America's built environments. This book invites the readers on a journey through the eye and mind of the architect, from the very drawings that give shape and form to the idea, through the tracks and traces found in long lost letters, office records, and other primary sources. You will never see the buildings around you, anywhere, in the same way again. -- From publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Crafting Preservation Criteria by : John H. Sprinkle, Jr.
Download or read book Crafting Preservation Criteria written by John H. Sprinkle, Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1966, American historic preservation was transformed by the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act, which created a National Register of Historic Places. Now comprising more than 1.4 million historic properties across the country, the National Register is the official federal list of places in the United States thought to be worthy of preservation. One of the fundamental principles of the National Register is that every property is evaluated according to a standard set of criteria that provide the framework for understanding why a property is significant in American history. The origins of these criteria are important because they provide the threshold for consideration by a broad range of federal preservation programs, from planning for continued adaptive use, to eligibility for grants, and inclusion in heritage tourism and educational programs. Crafting Preservation Criteria sets out these preservation criteria for students, explaining how they got added to the equation, and elucidating the test cases that allowed for their use. From artworks to churches, from 'the fifty year rule' to 'the historic scene', students will learn how places have been historically evaluated to be placed on the National Register, and how the criteria evolved over time.
