Book Synopsis Excavations at Hulton Abbey, Staffordshire 1987-1994 by : William D. Klemperer
Download or read book Excavations at Hulton Abbey, Staffordshire 1987-1994 written by William D. Klemperer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hulton Abbey was a minor Cistercian monastery in north Staffordshire (England), founded in 1219 and finally dissolved in 1538. This is the final report on the archaeological excavations undertaken there between 1987 and 1994. In particular, the chapter house was uncovered and re-assessed and the eastern part of the church and north aisle were completely excavated, together with the eastern half of the nave. The excavations are described by area and chronological phase with detailed specialist reports including architectural stonework and decorated floor tiles. An extensive programme of sampling and analysis of pollen remains from burials was also completed. The remains of 91 individuals, mainly men but also women and children, are reported on in detail, with sections on abnormalities and pathology as well as medieval burial goods such as a wax chalice and wooden wands. Comparisons with other published monastic sites in the region help to place Hulton into a wider context. An important element of the project was education and community involvement and today the site lies in a small urban park in Stoke-on-Trent."

Book Synopsis Public Sculpture of Staffordshire and the Black Country by : George Thomas Noszlopy
Download or read book Public Sculpture of Staffordshire and the Black Country written by George Thomas Noszlopy and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Black Country" is an area historically known as the cradle of the Industrial Revolution—a thriving regioin built around deep coal seams, conjuring up images of fiery red furnaces by night and black, sooty citadels by day. Yet today the resource-rich region also features many striking public sculptures. This volume provides a comprehensive catalog to all of the historic sculptures and public monuments in Staffordshire and the Black Country. George Noszlopy and Fiona Waterhouse catalog each individual sculpture in detail, including information about the sculptor, the sculpture's historical and artistic significance, the commissioning agent, and the date of installation. The volume also features 350 black-and-white photographs that document the diverse and rich beauty of the region's public monuments. The ninth volume in the widely acclaimed, award-winning Public Sculpture of Britain series, Public Sculpture of Staffordshire and the Black Country is an invaluable resource for British historians, art scholars, and travelers alike.

Book Synopsis Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Aging in Nineteenth-Century Culture by : Anne-Julia Zwierlein
Download or read book Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Aging in Nineteenth-Century Culture written by Anne-Julia Zwierlein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay collection develops new perspectives on constructions of old age in literary, legal, scientific and periodical cultures of the nineteenth century. Rigorously interdisciplinary, the book places leading researchers of old age in nineteenth-century literature in dialogue with experts from the fields of cultural, legal and social history. It revisits the origins of many modern debates about aging in the nineteenth century – a period that saw the emergence of cultural and scientific frameworks for the understanding of old age that continue to be influential today. The contributors provide fresh readings of canonical texts by Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, Anthony Trollope, Thomas Hardy, Henry James and others. The volume builds momentum in the burgeoning field of aging studies. It argues that the study of old age in the nineteenth century has entered a new and distinctly interdisciplinary phase that is characterized by a set of research interests that are currently shared across a range of disciplines and that explore conceptions of old age in the nineteenth century by privileging, respectively, questions of agency, of place, of gender and sexuality, and of narrative and aesthetic form.

Book Synopsis Social Mobility in Nineteenth- and Early Twentieth-Century England by : A. Miles
Download or read book Social Mobility in Nineteenth- and Early Twentieth-Century England written by A. Miles and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999-04-12 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering book provides the first systematic historical analysis of occupational and social mobility in England. Using a collection of over 10,000 marriage certificates to examine inter-generational change, and almost 500 autobiographical texts and abstracts to explore the dynamics of career mobility, it shows how the development of the nineteenth-century economy was accompanied by rising rates of mobility, which made English society more 'open' while at the same encouraging a distinct process of working-class formation.
