Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collected volume of essays focuses on two complementary themes: firstly, the theoretical approaches to the study of European Political Cooperation; and secondly, the empirical analysis of EPC activity. The volume does not argue one particular approach to the study of EPC, but rather presents competing, and often conflicting, theoretical perspectives. At the empirical level, a future research agenda is suggested and it is argued that EPC research should become comparative in nature.

Book Synopsis Rethinking European Union foreign policy by : Ben Tonra
Download or read book Rethinking European Union foreign policy written by Ben Tonra and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This book reviews a variety of approaches to the study of the European Union’s foreign policy. Much analysis of EU foreign policy contains theoretical assumptions about the nature of the EU and its member states, their inter-relationships, the international system in which they operate and the nature of European integration. Such assumptions, when not discussed openly, often curtail debate. This book opens up this field of enquiry so students, observers and analysts of EU foreign policy can review a range of tools and theoretical templates from which the development and the trajectory of the EU’s foreign policy can be studied. Situated at the interface between European studies and international relations, the book outlines how the EU relates to the rest of the world, explaining its effort towards creating a credible, effective and principled foreign, security and defence policy.
Book Synopsis New Approaches to EU Foreign Policy by : Maciej Wilga
Download or read book New Approaches to EU Foreign Policy written by Maciej Wilga and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EU foreign policy once existed in the form of the European Political Cooperation with only a limited political leverage and symbolic institutional underpinnings. In recent years rapid changes have occurred, including an expanding institutional apparatus, increased responsibility and growing demand for action. This book examines new approaches to the EU’s foreign policy that address its rapidly changing character, presenting the newest theoretical perspectives and dealing with novel empirical developments. Rather than simply considering structural variations and changes in the agency of the EU, it explores the new complexity in EU foreign policy. The authors offer new theoretical perspectives and new empirical studies dealing, among others, with issues such as: Power delegation to the Commission. EU diplomacy. Parliamentarisation and constitutionalisation. Committees’ involvement in foreign policy process. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of European politics, European foreign policy and European integration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking the European Union draws together contributors from across Europe to reflect upon methods of conceptualising the European Union within both changing global and European contexts. The outcome is a text that goes beyond an exploration of the existing methods of conceptualising the European integration process and reflects upon the nature of the EU itself.

Book Synopsis European Foreign and Security Policy by : Catherine Gegout
Download or read book European Foreign and Security Policy written by Catherine Gegout and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2010-05-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union's (EU) Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) stipulates that all member states must unanimously ratify policy proposals through their representatives on the EU Council. Intergovernmentalism, or the need for equal agreement from all member nations, is used by many political scientists and policy analysts to study how the EU achieves its CFSP. However, in European Foreign and Security Policy, Catherine Gegout modifies this theory, arguing instead for analyses based on what she terms 'constrained intergovernmentalism.' Gegout's theory of constrained intergovernmentalism allows for member states, in particular France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, to bargain with one another and to make rational decisions but also takes into account the constraints imposed by the United States, the European Commission, and the precedents set by past decisions. Three in-depth case studies of CFSP decision-making support her argument, as she examines the EU position on China's human rights record, EU sanctions against Serbia, and EU relations with NATO.

Download or read book Explaining Euro-Paralysis written by J. Zielonka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about Europe's apparent inability to cope with the complex international environment. Why does the Union fail to create a workable (sound) Common Foreign and Security Policy? Five distinct explanations for Euro-paralysis are considered, focusing on power politics, the assertion of national interests, misguided institutional designs, a crisis of modern democracy, and the post-Cold War conceptual confusion.
Book Synopsis The European Union's Foreign and Security Policy by : Ramses A. Wessel
Download or read book The European Union's Foreign and Security Policy written by Ramses A. Wessel and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1999-08-11 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common foreign and security policy (CFSP) of the European Union and its member states reflects an unprecedented form of international cooperation on the borderline between international law and European Community law. While more 'supranational' European community, CFSP in this book is presented as a form of legal cooperation that is far from informal. The former diplomatic European Political Cooperation has developed into a policy in which the states still play an important role, but where their competences are shared with the international organisation called the European Union. Conclusions on the interpretation of the 'CFSP legal order' and on the legal status of the European Union are based on a thorough analysis of the purposes and scope of CFSP, the decision-making procedures, the nature of the CFSP decisions, the existing supervisory mechanisms and the competences of the European Union. The book addresses the key issues of international institutional law in an original and clarifying manner. This makes the book not only a valuable source for academics working in European Union law and international institutional law in general, but also for practitioners involved in national and European foreign policy making. The book contains an extensive bibliography as well as a list of adopted CFSP decisions.
Book Synopsis The Political Economy of European Integration by : Finn Laursen
Download or read book The Political Economy of European Integration written by Finn Laursen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of European integration produced much scholarly debate in the 1950s and '60s. The following two decades saw few works on European integration that included more elaborate discussions of theory and methodology; most studies in that period were fairly descriptive. In recent years there has been renewed theoretical interest in European integration. This book, however, is one of the first to discuss and apply various political-economy approaches explicitly to integration, including classical integration theory and modern public choice theories. Areas covered include common policies and decision making, as well as the external relations of the EU. The influence of the European Parliament, the concept of subsidiarity, trade policy, Economic and Monetary Union, reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, relations with EFTA and Eastern European countries, as well as enlargement, are all discussed. Audience: Of interest to both scholars and policy makers concerned with these issues.
Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of the European Union by : Finn Laursen
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the European Union written by Finn Laursen and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current European Union (EU) has existed since 1 November 1993. It emerged from the Treaty of Maastricht largely negotiated during 1991. But the history of European integration goes further back. The Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950 led to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951, and in 1957 the two Treaties of Rome created the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (EAEC or EURATOM), which started operating from 1 January 1958. For some years the EEC was often referred to as the Common Market. The Merger Treaty of 1965 (in force since 1967) created a single executive, the European Commission, and a single Council of Ministers. The three Communities from the beginning in 1958 shared the Parliamentary Assembly and European Court of Justice (ECJ). Although these Communities still had separate treaties, they were increasingly seen as the European Community (EC). This new edition of Historical Dictionary of the European Union has a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 400 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, member states, internal policies, external relations, basic theories, treaties, and law. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the European Union.
