This social problem challenges the field of social work to develop interventions that support and honor military families for their sacrifices both in deployment and the aftermath of war. The Veteran and Family Reintegration Program is a proposed pilot program to respond to the reintegration/reunification challenges that military families experience when they have been impacted by trauma that follows the insurgency of war. The proposed pilot program aims to assist OIF/OEF military families to cope, heal, and thrive in the reunification process. If funded, this 2 year pilot program will be implemented as a subcomponent program to the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) program of the Veterans Affairs (VA) of Long Beach, and will assist unserved OIF/OEF military family units in the post-deployment phase.

Family members provide support to service members while they serve or when they have difficulties; family problems can interfere with the ability of service members to deploy or remain in theater; and family members are central influences on whether members continue to serve. In addition, rising family diversity and complexity will likely increase the difficulty of creating military policies, programs and practices that adequately support families in the performance of military duties. Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society examines the challenges and opportunities facing military families and what is known about effective strategies for supporting and protecting military children and families, as well as lessons to be learned from these experiences. This report offers recommendations regarding what is needed to strengthen the support system for military families.

Shortly after troops started returning from their deployments, some active-duty service members and veterans began experiencing mental health problems. Given the stressors associated with war, it is not surprising that some service members developed such mental health conditions as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorder. Subsequent epidemiologic studies conducted on military and veteran populations that served in the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq provided scientific evidence that those who fought were in fact being diagnosed with mental illnesses and experiencing mental healthâ€"related outcomesâ€"in particular, suicideâ€"at a higher rate than the general population. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality, capacity, and access to mental health care services for veterans who served in the Armed Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn. It includes an analysis of not only the quality and capacity of mental health care services within the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also barriers faced by patients in utilizing those services.

The book is organized in three sections.* The first section looks at the need for the proper treatment of veterans and military personnel who have experienced different forms of trauma, such as moral injury. Book excerpt: An analysis of homeless veterans participating in the Homeless Veteran Reintegration Program The purpose of this study was to conduct an analysis on ex post facto data of the federal grant supported Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) administered at Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina. Pre-existing data on variables such as performance goals, training activities, support services, and demographics from program years 2006-2008 were used as data sources for the study. A descriptive statistics method of program analysis was employed and results were used to determine if performance outcomes met initial performance goals. The results from the study revealed that in order to successfully reintegrate into the workforce, HVRP participants required basic employability and entry-level technical skills training, and access to support systems that would allow them to meet the needs of their families while they concentrated on gaining new competencies.
