Reptiles are especially diverse in this region, and are a very important component of the biota, from a biological as well as a cultural perspective. Venomous snakes are the most studied group of reptiles in Mexico and Central America, as they are of great ecological and medical importance. Nevertheless, our understanding of the evolutionary relationships of many groups of venomous snakes is superficial. Understanding these relationships is no trivial matter as it is fundamental to appropriately address broader evolutionary questions. Herein I examine the systematic relationships of the two most diverse lineages of venomous snakes in Middle America, the rattlesnakes (genus Crotalus) and the coralsnakes (genus Micrurus). In particular, I studied the phylogenetic relationships of an obscure lineage of rattlesnakes, the longtailed rattlesnakes, as well as the phylogeny and species limits of coralsnakes in the diastema species complex of the genus Micrurus. I used nuclear and mitochondrial genes to test if the longtailed rattlesnakes form a monophyletic group and to estimate their closest relatives within the genus. By doing so, I provide the most robust molecular phylogeny for the rattlesnakes to date. Relationships among coralsnakes are known to be difficult to estimate with the use of DNA markers obtained from traditional sequencing techniques. Therefore, I use a combination of traditional sequencing of mitochondrial DNA and next generation sequencing (in the form of double digest restriction associated DNA sequencing, ddradseq), to elucidate evolutionary relationships and species limits within the diastema species complex of coralsnakes. Lastly, I made use of the Burmese python genome as a proxy to understand how non-venom genes became recruited into venom systems in the most recent ancestor of both coralsnakes and rattlesnakes.

Book excerpt: A coral snake may be small, but don’t be fooled. This colorful little reptile carries a lethal weapon—one of the deadliest snake venoms in the world! The coral snake’s magnificent colors serve as a warning to other animals to stay away or risk being attacked by a poisonous killer. Certain folk rhymes, in fact, were invented to help people learn to identify these snakes. For example, "Red and yellow, kill a fellow; red and black, venom lack." Packed with fascinating facts and large, colorful photos, Coral Snakes: Beware the Colors! introduces young readers to the natural habitat, physical characteristics, diet, and behavior of these colorful creatures.

Book excerpt: 125 million years ago on the floodplains of North America, a burrowing lizard started down the long evolutionary path of shedding its limbs. The 60-plus species of snakes found in Sean P. Graham's American Snakes have this ancestral journey to thank for their ubiquity, diversity, and beauty. Although many people fear them, snakes are as much a part of America's rich natural heritage as redwoods, bald eagles, and grizzly bears. Neither a typical field guide nor an exhaustive reference, American Snakes is instead a fascinating study of the suborder Serpentes. Brimming with intriguing and unusual stories- of hognose snakes that roll over and play dead, blindsnakes with tiny vestigial lungs, rainbow-hued dipsadines, and wave-surfing sea-snakes- the text is interspersed with scores of gorgeous full-color images of snakes, from the scary to the sublime.
