Book excerpt: Describing the variables of composition, offering researchers a methodology with which to investigate how the variables interact in specific writing strategies, and suggesting how teachers might make use of the variables of revision to help students learn successful writing strategies appropriate to a business setting, this book reports a research study designed to (1) extend the analysis of revision into a "real world" context by examining the revising practices of proposal writers in a management consulting firm; (2) describe writers' motives and intentions in generating and revising a text; and (3) achieve a balanced perspective by examining both the processes and products of composition. Chapters 1 and 2 describe the research methodology, including the seven-variable taxonomy for analyzing the composing and revising process. Chapter 3 applies this taxonomy by describing the institutional procedures, values, and constraints characteristic of the "real world" environment selected for the study: a large management-consulting firm. Chapter 4 analyzes and compares in detail the rhetorical choices made in proposals written by two management consultants, providing further insight into the methodological and theoretical bases of the study. The final chapter summarizes the findings and presents implications for research and teaching. Material regarding the variables of revision, sentence structures, and statistical analyses of composing/revising processes are appended. (JD)

The authors conducted a study of the periphyton in Everglades National Park and the East Everglades 208 study area to: provide a quantitative description of the gross taxonomic composition of periphyton in various aquatic habitats; determine whether statistically significant differences in taxonomic composition between sites can be documented; relate variation in periphyton taxonomic composition to variation in environmental variables; and evaluate the relative potential value of various periphyton taxonomic compositions as a food source.

This is the first comprehensive textbook addressing these issues, as well as their practical implications with regard to software. The book is intended for scientists interested in statistically analyzing their compositional data. The subject enjoys relatively broad awareness in the geosciences and environmental sciences, but the spectrum of recent applications also covers areas like medicine, official statistics, and economics. Readers should be familiar with basic univariate and multivariate statistics. Knowledge of R is recommended but not required, as the book is self-contained.

Book excerpt: Scope and Purpose Although conductors based on the Al5 intermetallic compound Nb Sn 3 possess desirable high-field superconducting properties, manufacturing and handling difficulties, coupled with the tendency of their critical current densities to degrade rapidly under stress, have generally restricted their use to fairly straightforward, usually small-scale solenoidal-magnet applica tions. Likewise the Al5 compound VGa, which has a wider critical strain 3 window than NbSn but a uniformly lower upper critical field, has not 3 entered widespread service. Strain has been found to have no measurable influence on either the critical fields or the critical current densities of compound superconductors with BI and Cl5 crystal structures, but as yet they are still in the research and development stages. On the other hand, conductors using the binary alloy Ti-Nb or multi component alloys based on it, because of their relative ease of manufacture, excellent mechanical properties, and relatively low strain sensitivities, are now being pressed into service in numerous large-scale devices.
