Holmes decodes a cipher warning from Moriarty's organization for "Douglas" in "Birlstone", but a corpse is there already. When Mr. Douglas blows the head off his American assassin, he dresses the body as himself, and hides, to throw off the chase for good. Holmes guesses the missing dumb-bell weighted down the killer's clothes in the moat. The calling card left, VV341, is Vermissa Valley Lodge 341. Decades ago for Pinkerton, he went months undercover, first with Freemen in Chicago, then west to desolate mountain coal mine area, to take down corrupt murderers who ran the Valley Freemen Lodge, but criminals pursued. Holmes warns Douglas, when acquitted, to flee England. But Moriarty prevails. The second Mrs. Douglas telegrams that her husband was lost overboard on his way to South Africa on a ship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Valley of Fear is a cracking detective novel, a masterclass in how it's done by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is Holmes at his best, in a format that's unusual and incredibly interesting when coupled with the genre. The second half of the novel is set twenty years after the first half, in which Holmes is presented with an unusual case – he's asked to investigate the apparent death of a man called Douglas, who appears to have shot himself in the head with an American-style sawed-off shotgun. However, not everything is as it seems, and the conclusion of Holmes' investigation leads you in to the second half of the adventure. That was the best part, following a young man named McMurdo through a giant conspiracy.

Book Synopsis Sherlock Holmes by : Arthur Conan Doyle
Download or read book Sherlock Holmes written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published by Wordsworth Editions. This book was released on 1996-04-29 with total page 1136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is more than a century since the ascetic, gaunt and enigmatic detective, Sherlock Holmes, made his first appearance in A Study in Scarlet. From 1891, beginning with The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the now legendary and pioneering Strand Magazine began serialising Arthur Conan Doyle's matchless tales of detection, featuring the incomparable sleuth patiently assisted by his doggedly loyal and lovably pedantic friend and companion, Dr Watson. The stories are illustrated by the remarkable Sydney Paget from whom our images of Sherlock Holmes and his world derive and who first equipped Holmes with his famous deerstalker hat. The literary cult of Sherlock Holmes shows no sign of fading with time as each new generation comes to love and revere the penetrating mind and ruthless logic which were the undoing of so many Victorian master criminals.
