Book excerpt: In the late 1990s, Maryland’s deer management plan aimed to reduce and stabilize the state’s white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population. While attempting to achieve this goal through liberalized seasons and bag limits, managers estimated a decreasing fawn recruitment rate and sought to better understand causes for these declines, particularly in the western portion of the state. Fawn recruitment may be impacted by several factors: predation, disease, starvation, malnutrition, parasite-load, and collisions with vehicles and farm machinery. My study’s goal was to better understand the predator-prey relationship within western Maryland. One hypothesis is the predator community reducing the fawn recruitment. In western Maryland, black bear (Ursus americanus), bobcat ( Lynx rufus), and coyote (Canis latrans) are established, but the variation in abundance of these populations has not been well documented. I established 3 study areas focused on 3 publicly hunted state forests (Potomac-Garrett, Savage River, and Green Ridge State Forests). The first objective was to estimate the deer density and fawn recruitment at each study area. I used road-based distance sampling using a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) device to scan the landscape from August-October, 2015 and 2016. I replicated the FLIR survey 6 times on each study area in 2015 and 2016. Once collected, the data were analyzed using a uniform-key function within program DISTANCE. Neither deer density (Potomac-Garrett = 16 deer/km2, Savage River = 6 deer/km 2, Green Ridge = 12 deer/km2) nor fawn recruitment (Potomac-Garrett = 0.56 fawn/doe, Savage River = 0.54 fawn/doe, Green Ridge = 0.52 fawn/doe) changed between years.

Book excerpt: Quality deer management (QDM) is widely accepted as a principled management practice, yet QDM implications for population processes are unclear. Our research primarily focused on components of (1) dispersal ecology and (2) the genetic mating system of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) under QDM at Chesapeake Farms, Maryland. The objectives of our dispersal ecology research were: (1) to compare pre- and post-QDM dispersal parameter estimates, and (2) evaluate inbreeding avoidance and sexual-competition hypotheses as mechanisms of dispersal. Emigration of yearling males pre-QDM was 0.70 + 0.07, and post-QDM was 0.54 + 0.10. Genetic maternity analysis indicated that dispersal of orphans and non-orphans was similar. Dispersers exhibited breeding competition with other yearling males more often than nondispersers, and yearling male antler points appeared to be related to dispersal status in both pre- and post-QDM populations. Overall breeding behaviors of yearling males decreased from pre- to post-QDM. Our results fail to support inbreeding avoidance and support sexual-competition as a cause of fall dispersal at Chesapeake Farms. Through QDM, an older male age structure may have suppressed breeding competition in yearling males and decreased dispersal rates. The objectives of our genetic mating system research were to evaluate: (1) age-specific male breeding success; (2) relationships of weight and antler size with male breeding success; (3) instances of multiple paternity in single litters; and (4) male and female mate selection. Book excerpt: Despite extensive research on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) specific research on the impacts of seasonal changes and climatic factors on movement, activity, and habitat use of adult males managed under a Quality Deer Management (QDM) philosophy is lacking. This research focused on movement, activity, and habitat use of adult male white-tailed deer on a privately owned 1,330-ha agricultural/wildlife research farm under QDM since 1994. Eighteen adult males were fitted with global positioning system (GPS) radio telemetry collars that provided detailed data of movement, activity, and habitat use in relation to seasonal changes and climatic factors. I looked for changes in seasonal patterns of adult males during four 3-week intervals between September and December. Seasonal changes focused primarily on pre-breed, breed, and post-breed periods predetermined by fawning data. Impacts of climatic factors focused on precipitation, barometric pressure, temperature, and lunar cycles and were analyzed using multiple regression (PROC MIXED, SAS, 2001) with repeated measures and random effects. Habitat selection was determined from GPS positional data overlaid on geographic information system (GIS) maps of Chesapeake Farms and calculated using compositional analysis (Aebischer et al. 1993). Mean home range was 299.6 ha with breed (298.6 ha, F6, 80 = 3.95, P = 0.006) and pre-breed2 (285.5 ha, F6, 80 = 3.95, P = 0.007) ranges being significantly larger than summer (114.7 ha). Breed (46.9 ha, F6, 80 = 4.15, P = 0.014) and pre-breed2 (46.7 ha, F6, 80 = 3.95, P = 0.008) core areas were also significantly larger than summer (13.8 ha). Intensity of use ranged from 12% during summer to 16.7% during post-breed with a mean of 14.8%. Adult males increased movement and activity from summer to the breed season with a subsequent decrease during post-breed. Book excerpt: Maternal factors have the potential to influence the morphometrics of offspring; however, the magnitude and persistence of those influences are not well known. I investigated the extent to which maternal factors influenced offspring phenotype at the individual and population level for captive white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) originating from three distinct physiographic regions of Mississippi, USA. First, I tested whether male white-tailed deer displayed improvements in weaponry and body size after two generations of being released from nutritional restrictions. I found that improved nutrition positively influenced all morphometrics; however, we observed variation in magnitude of improvement. Antler size was most responsive to improved nutrition while body mass and skeletal structures were less responsive; potentially indicating an adaptive strategy allowing males to increase yearly reproductive success without jeopardizing lifetime reproductive success. Second, we assessed whether maternal characteristics, early life characteristics or a combination of both persistently influenced morphometrics throughout maturity. I found that late birth date positively influenced offspring body mass through three-years of age; indicating that late-born fawns over-compensated for a late start to life. I also identified an indirect silver-spoon effect as early-, heavy-born fawns were heavy juveniles. In turn, heavy juveniles were also heavy adults. Therefore, male white-tailed deer may gain reproductive opportunities by displaying one of two strategies to increase body mass. Lastly, I estimated heritability for six antler characteristics and quantified the influence of maternal factors such as parturition date and litter size on the predictability of antler size. All antler characteristics were highly heritable. Yearling antler size was a moderate predictor of antler size later in life, but accounting for maternal factors greatly improved predictability. The influence of maternal factors decreased with increasing male age suggesting that compensation for the negative influence of maternal factors may occur after an individual's first year of life. My results suggest that although antler characteristics are highly heritable, the large influence of maternal factors on predictability indicates that use of yearling antler size as selective harvest criteria may not achieve all management goals.

Book excerpt: 4.1.1 Demographic significance Confined populations grow more rapidly than populations from which dispersal is permitted (Lidicker, 1975; Krebs, 1979; Tamarin et at., 1984), and demography in island populations where dispersal is restricted differs greatly from nearby mainland populations (Lidicker, 1973; Tamarin, 1977, 1978; Gliwicz, 1980), clearly demonstrating the demographic signi ficance of dispersal. The prevalence of dispersal in rapidly expanding populations is held to be the best evidence for presaturation dispersal. Because dispersal reduces the growth rate of source populations, it is generally believed that emigration is not balanced by immigration, and that mortality of emigrants occurs as a result of movement into a 'sink' of unfavourable habitat. If such dispersal is age- or sex-biased, the demo graphy of the population is markedly affected, as a consequence of differ ences in mortality in the dispersive sex or age class. Habitat heterogeneity consequently underlies this interpretation of dispersal and its demographic consequences, although the spatial variability of environments is rarely assessed in dispersal studies.
