Book Synopsis The Vagaries of Life by : Joseph P Ainsley
Download or read book The Vagaries of Life written by Joseph P Ainsley and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my poem 'Life's Vagaries' I describe observations of a tattooed female, shuffling along in the market place with her boyfriend and the sign on a nearby church inviting people to 'light candles'. My emotional response is to juxtapose the meaning of love with religion. This book of poems expresses a wide range of experiences as I create responses to major themes in life such as birth, love and death. Covering over seventy years, the poems show how an early religious upbringing can leave its almost 'Freudian' imprint. This can be seen in 'Lessons of War' one of my early memories. My interest in philosophy is demonstrated in the poem 'Stages of Life in a Dressing Gown' where I reach a mid-life crisis and almost press the self destruct button...but thankfully recover to continue the journey. Hope you will join the journey with me and see life from a different perspective.
Book Synopsis Preaching in Jamaican Seasons by : Devon Dick
Download or read book Preaching in Jamaican Seasons written by Devon Dick and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “So, what am I hoping to accomplish with this publication of my sermons, Preaching in Jamaican Seasons?” Author and cleric Devon Dick hopes that readers will hear the prophetic voice, the therapeutic voice, and the teaching voice in these homiletical formulations and, more importantly, that readers will hear the voice of our Saviour Jesus, the Christ, speaking to our hearts and minds. Revd Dr Dick explains further that this compilation of his sermons is offered so that they may be a source of comfort to persons who are afflicted, confront those who need to change, and challenge all to a commitment to God as revealed in Jesus, the Christ, and empowered by the Spirit. The author’s desire is that these sermons deliver a clear message from God that can be applied to the lived experience; and that when read, they will come to life again, aided by the working of the Holy Spirit, and will not only teach and guide us into righteousness but plant a seed in our lives, knowing that it will accomplish that which God wills, as He gives it the increase beyond anything the author himself could dream of or envision.

Download or read book The Book of Life written by Jim Hester and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Life takes a fresh look at redemption and uses it as a guide for approaching both personal issues of spirituality and societal issues of politics. By stretching its embrace widely, it enables the reader to learn how individuals can get to heaven and how the people of the United States can solve their country's most persistent problems. By drawing on the imagery of runners in a race, following the example of Paul the apostle, Jim Hester looks at life as a contest between two ways: humanity's way and God's way. The line of thought in The Book of Life explores these two concepts, incorporating the six main sections of the Bible and the six days before Jesus's death and interpreting them in light of six different topics: problems, ideas, goals, attitudes, events and people.
Book Synopsis A Numerate Life by : John Allen Paulos
Download or read book A Numerate Life written by John Allen Paulos and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing intuitive ideas from mathematics, this quirky "meta-memoir" raises questions about our lives that most of us don't think to ask, but arguably should: What part of memory is reliable fact, what part creative embellishment? Which favorite presuppositions are unfounded, which statistically biased? By conjoining two opposing mindsets--the suspension of disbelief required in storytelling and the skepticism inherent in the scientific method--bestselling mathematician John Allen Paulos has created an unusual hybrid, a composite of personal memories and mathematical approaches to re-evaluating them. Entertaining vignettes from Paulos's biography abound--ranging from a bullying math teacher and a fabulous collection of baseball cards to romantic crushes, a grandmother’s petty larceny, and his quite unintended role in getting George Bush elected president in 2000. These vignettes serve as springboards to many telling perspectives: simple arithmetic puts life-long habits in a dubious new light; higher dimensional geometry helps us see that we're all rather peculiar; nonlinear dynamics explains the narcissism of small differences cascading into very different siblings; logarithms and exponentials yield insight on why we tend to become bored and jaded as we age; and there are tricks and jokes, probability and coincidences, and much more. For fans of Paulos or newcomers to his work, this witty commentary on his life--and yours--is fascinating reading.
Book Synopsis INVENTING THE TRUTH: Memory and Its Tricks - A Gay Life by : Lucien L Agosta PhD
Download or read book INVENTING THE TRUTH: Memory and Its Tricks - A Gay Life written by Lucien L Agosta PhD and published by BookLocker.com, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INVENTING THE TRUTH: MEMORY AND ITS TRICKS offers a collection of essays dealing with the author's life experiences as a gay man. Because exact accuracy is alien to the way memory works, the verifiable fictions in this book are, necessarily, inventions of the truth. Included essays examine the author's early cross-dressing and other childhood challenges to his birth gender, the important formative influences on him of his Catholic parish and school and the local public library, and his belated and complicated coming out as a gay man. Another essay offers a dialectic between lust and love. Defining himself as a "Promiscuous Hedonist" for most of his adult life, the author at long last discovered that love was real and that he could love another man in his own gay way. Subsequent essays investigate the influence on the author of his two immigrant grandfathers and the unsavory memories of a racist past growing up in Louisiana in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. A further essay explores the author's primal fears of darkness and death and how he achieved a satisfactory resolution of those fears. A final essay explores the reams of war-time letters that constituted the courtship of the author's parents who maintained their connection through letters for the nearly three years they were apart during WWII. These letters focus on the challenging beginnings of a 54-year love affair as well as on conditions during the war of a soldier overseas and his intended at home in Ohio whom he was courting by near-daily correspondence. The essays in this book offer accounts of seminal remembered experiences in the author's past now interpreted in a language unavailable to him at the time those experiences were occurring. In these reliable accounts, the author tells the truth about his gay life in the most honest way he knows how to invent it.

Book excerpt: Life Scripts: A Transactional Analysis of Unconscious Relational Patterns is an exciting collection of contemporary writings on Life Script theory and psychotherapeutic methods. Each chapter describes an evolution of Eric Berne's original theory and brings together a stimulating range of international perspectives, theoretical positions, clinical experiences and psychotherapy practices, as well as a psychotherapy story that illustrates the theory. The concept of Life Scripts has frequently been associated with the determinism represented in theoretical scripts, yet, this book offers some new and diverse perspectives. A few contributors address the significance of early childhood experiences in forming a Life Script, while others reflect the perspectives of post-modernism, constructivism, existential philosophy, neuroscience, developmental research, mythology and the importance of narrative. An illustrious group of authors has integrated a broad professional perspective into their understanding of a theory of mind, theories of personality and the methods of psychotherapy. Each chapter provides a unique theoretical perspective; some are provocative and challenge Berne's and others long held notions about Life Scripts.
