Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of the Kindergarten Gifts It has been my earnest desire in the following pages to show the educational principles advanced as immanent in the methods used with the kindergarten gifts, and to show the methods used as principles in practice. The purpose of the volume is not to develop specific methods and devices for the imitative use of kindergartners. The procedures presented are but illustrations or embodiments of universal principles which may be applied in a thousand varied ways. If the reader grasps the laws of growth and education which are here made concrete, and feels inspired and informed to make her own applications in the kindergarten, then the aim of this book is achieved. As I re-read these chapters, I feel the limitations of the printed word in expressing the thought of one who has long relied on the more intimate and more adequate opportunities of classroom discussion to present and clarify pedagogical thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Froebels Gifts The three little volumes on that Republic of Childhood, the kindergarten, of Which this hand book, dealing with the gifts, forms the initial number, might well be called Chips from a Kin dergarten Workshop. They are the outcome of talks and conferences on Froebel's educational principles with successive groups of earnest young women here, there, and everywhere, for fifteen years, and represent as much practical work at the bench as a carpenter could show in a similar length of time. They are the result of mutual give and take, of question and answer, of efiort and experience, of the friction of minds against one another, of ideas struck out in the heat of argument, and of varied experience With many hundred little children of all nationalities and conditions. They are not theories, Written in the seclusion of the study and if perchance they have the defects, so should they have the virtues. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunday Kindergarten Game Gift and Story: A Manual for Use in the Sunday, Schools and in the Home In placing The Sunday Kindergarten: Game, Gift and Story in this series of textbooks for the graded Sunday school, a few words of explanation seem necessary. To accomplish its purpose as a textbook it was necessary to make this volume in such a way that it would be easily adapted to varying conditions. Very few schools, relatively speaking, have as yet reached the stage of advancement where a trained kindergartner can be employed for the instruction of the children from three to six years of age. In the majority of schools this will always be impractical because no such persons are available in small communities. There are nevertheless many elements of the kindergarten helpful in themselves which can be appreciated and intelligently handled by those who are not trained kindergartners, provided directions are sufficiently explicit. The foundation of kindergarten education is no longer a mystery to the world in general. Periodical literature, the widespread interest in education on scientific principles, many books on child-study, have brought to the general public a point of view which coincides with the general principles of kindergarten work. For this reason, therefore, much work that has formerly been performed only by trained kindergartners can now be done by amateurs with some degree of success. To kindergartners, the present book may seem unnecessarily explicit and because of that feature to limit the natural free expression of the teacher's own personality. Such is not the intention. Those who are able to develop on sound principles lessons better adapted to the particular children under their charge, should use the lessons in this book only as a starting-point for their own thinking, not a programme. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Practice of the Kindergarten The young woman who has finished her course in kindergarten training and is about to begin the business of teaching often finds it difficult to adjust herself to the new relation; difficult to bring to bear upon the problems which she now meets the various phases of knowledge which she has been acquiring in/the past two years. It is possible that she has been surfeited with new ideas and facts, and many salient points in rela tion to child-training, and in relation to the agencies at her command, have strayed from her memory. She will have frequent recourse to her notebook; but even this repository of informa tion will sometimes be found lacking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Froebel's Play-Gifts Finally there is the middle or mediating class, which insists upon being neither stationary nor revolutionary, but evolutionary, unfolding with the progress of the time, keeping step to the spirit of the age, whose watchword is evolution in its widest and worthiest meaning. Here we place ourselves, worshiping neither the fetich on the one hand nor the fiend on the other. Our belief is that Froebel has given to the world a seed-thought which is to be developed into its fullness by and in the great kindergarden organ ism, whose principle of existence must be growth, not being crystallized on the one hand, not being destructive on the other.
