A fruitful methodological symmetry now prevails in the analysis of economic systems, emphasizing how their underlying institutions affect individual incentives. Most importantly, comparative work now includes traditionally non-economic spheres, such as politics, legal systems, and culture. While this approach represents a huge step forward from the institutional vacuums of earlier models, it has inherited the faulty economic anthropology of the market socialists that created those vacuums in the first place. Failure to account for differences in knowledge-generating properties between institutions has created several blind spots in this new literature. These essays examine the implications of taking knowledge seriously in modern comparative economics. The first argues that a pure rational choice approach that endogenizes institutions leaves no theoretical space for inefficiency, and that Hayekian knowledge problems must be the root cause of unrealized gains from trade. The second makes the case that market institutions provide tighter epistemic feedback than do democratic political institutions. The result is that markets generate the gains from trade automatically, while politics is reliant on mental models to substitute for institutional feedback. The third essay explores the relationship of this Austrian approach to heterodox social ontology. It makes the case that Austrians, by holding rational choice and knowledge problems side by side, get the best of both the heterodox and mainstream approaches to understanding social reality.

Some Reflections My first proposition is that if we are interested in analyzing the performance and dynamic properties of the world's economies, it is only at significant peril that comparative economists can overlook noneconomic or "political" factors. This is not to say that it is illegitimate to abstract from non-economic factors for particular purposes; rather, such abstraction should occur only with cogni zance of the influences being suppressed. I have argued elsewhere that the analytical compromise in suppressing noneconomic variables is greater for the study of planned than for market economies. [7] Borrowing from Polanyi [8], it is claimed that in market sys tems the economic sphere is disembedded from (separate and not subordinate to) the political, social and cultural spheres, while in planned systems the economic sphere is embedded in the noneconomic spheres. To be sure, market economies are strongly affected by political and cultural factors, but planned economies have and often exercise the potential to let political goals dominate in making production, allocational, or distributional choices. Indeed, it is difficult in practice to separate out what are political and what are economic decisions in planned systems.

It is generally accepted that the economist Calvin Bryce Hoover was the one who initiated the establishment. Prior to 1989, comparative economics was primarily concerned with the analysis of comparative economic systems. However, after that year, the field shifted its focus to a significant degree toward the comparison of the economic repercussions of the transition experience from socialism to capitalism. The field of economics, which is the study of acquiring knowledge concerning the production, consumption, and transfer of wealth, includes this discipline as one of its subfields. The economic system is originally established on the basis of the collective desires of the population as well as the resources that are accessible. The gross domestic product (GDP) is a metric that can be used to evaluate the performance of the economic system; more specifically, it would provide an indication of the growth rate of the country. It is also possible to arrive at normative judgments by asking questions such as whether or not there is a disparity in the distribution of wealth and income and whether or not there is social fairness. On a regular basis, theorists attempt to analyze both the positive and normative features of the economic system in general. In order to accomplish this, they make assumptions about the rules of the game that regulate utility-seeking. When the economic system of a country is either a perfect planning economic system or a perfect competition economic system, it is relatively straightforward to forecast the outcomes of the government's economic system.
