Book Synopsis Detection of Abandoned Underground Coal Mines by Geophysical Methods by : HRB-Singer, Inc. Environmental Sciences Branch
Download or read book Detection of Abandoned Underground Coal Mines by Geophysical Methods written by HRB-Singer, Inc. Environmental Sciences Branch and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acid drainage produced by abandoned coal mines continues to cause serious water pollution problems. Without knowing the exact location of the concealed openings and the extent of the mine, source abatement techniques are virtually impossible. Drilling is the only known method for accurately determining the location and extent of the mine voids, but this is extremely expensive. This project attacks the problem through field studies of the following geophysical methods: electrical resistivity, self-potential, infrared radiometry, total field and differential magnetometry, seismic refraction and reflection, very low frequency electromagnetic and induced polarization over well-documented, drift, coal mines. Airborne infrared radiometry proved to be an excellent tool for detecting and mapping acid mine/fresh water sources, acid mine/fresh water drainage, and fracture traces under selected conditions.

Book Synopsis Geological Hazards by : Fred G. Bell
Download or read book Geological Hazards written by Fred G. Bell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-02-25 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural hazards cost the global economy over $50,000 million per year. Two thirds of this is spent on damage repair, the remainder represents the cost of predicting, preventing and mitigating against disasters. Man-made hazards such as groundwater pollution, subsidence and soil erosion add to this figure. Geological Hazards presents a state-of-the-art survey and examines methods of assessing, evaluating and combating hazards, both natural and man-made.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2004 Claire P. Holdredge Award of the Association of Engineering Geologists (USA). The only book to concentrate on the relationship between geology and its implications for construction, this book covers the full scope of the subject from site investigation through to the complexities of reservoirs and dam sites. Features include international case studies throughout, and summaries of accepted practice, plus sections on waste disposal, and contaminated land.
Book Synopsis Mining and its Impact on the Environment by : Fred G. Bell
Download or read book Mining and its Impact on the Environment written by Fred G. Bell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2007 E.B. Burwell, Jr. Award of the Geological Society of America Mining activity has left a legacy of hazards to the environment, such as waste, unstable ground and contamination, which can be problematic when redeveloping land. This book highlights the effects of past mining and provides information on the types of problems it may cause in both urban and rural areas. By way of example, the book also demonstrates how such problems may be anticipated, investigated, predicted, prevented and controlled. Furthermore, it shows how sites already affected by mining problems and hazards can be remediated and rehabilitated. Covering subsidence, surface mining, disposal of waste, problems resulting from mine closure and mineral processing, Mining and its Impact on the Environment is an excellent reference for practising mining and geotechnical engineers, as well as students in this field.
Book Synopsis Geological Hazards in the UK by : D.P. Giles
Download or read book Geological Hazards in the UK written by D.P. Giles and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK is perhaps unique globally in that it presents the full spectrum of geological time, stratigraphy and associated lithologies within its boundaries. With this wide range of geological assemblages comes a wide range of geological hazards, whether they be geophysical (earthquakes, effects of volcanic eruptions, tsunami, landslides), geotechnical (collapsible, compressible, liquefiable, shearing, swelling and shrinking soils), geochemical (dissolution, radon and methane gas hazards) or georesource related (coal, chalk and other mineral extraction). An awareness of these hazards and the risks that they pose is a key requirement of the engineering geologist. The Geological Society considered that a Working Party Report would help to put the study and assessment of geohazards into the wider social context, helping the engineering geologist to better communicate the issues concerning geohazards in the UK to the client and the public. This volume sets out to define and explain these geohazards, to detail their detection, monitoring and management and to provide a basis for further research and understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of ground-penetrating radar surveys at three highway sites indicate that subsurface penetration varies widely with geologic material type and amount of cultural interference. Two highway sites were chosen over abandoned underground coal mines in eastern Ohio. A third site in western Ohio was chosen in an area known to be underlain by naturally occurring voids in limestone.

This book was released on 1983-10-31 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first phase of geophysical exploration is carried out on the subsurface. The subsurface in this phase is inaccessible to direct observation. D.W. Strangway presents an interesting and effective method: audiofrequency magnetotelluric (AMT) sounding. In the second phase where observations can be made, D.J Buchanan writes of fault detection in coal seams, and A. Hussain writes about of gravity surveys.Other contributions include, improvement of geophysical logs by filtering and a troublesome problem which can appear in either phase of exploration-discovery and exploration of caves and abandoned mine workings.'
