Book excerpt: There are a number of different techniques capable of being used to measure corrosion within equipment. The most simple, the use of metal coupons, usually causes the process to be shut down, is manpower intensive, and has a time delay in getting the required corrosion information. Electrical Resistance (ER) techniques are often used but their response is very sensitive to temperature and they cannot differentiate between general and localized corrosion. Electrochemical techniques, such as linear polarization resistance (LPR), electrochemical noise (EN), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), harmonic distortion analysis (HDA), and electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM), have the capability of solving most of those drawbacks. Electrochemical probes can be mounted permanently in most equipment, give regular measurements of the intensity of corrosion, and some can detect localized corrosion. Of all of the electrochemical techniques, EN has the most potential for being used successfully to measure general and localized corrosion rates of equipment. The EN technique was studied in the late 1970s and early 80s as a means of detecting localized (stochastic) corrosion phenomena, such as occurs with pitting, crevice and cavitation attack. EN measurements are based on fluctuations in electrochemical potential and corrosion current that occur during corrosion. Electrochemical potential is related to the driving force (thermodynamics) of the reaction, while corrosion current is related to the rate of reaction (kinetics) of the reaction. The idea is that random electrochemical events on the surface of a corroding metal will generate noise in the overall potential and current signals. Each type of corrosion (for example general corrosion, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking) will have a characteristic "fingerprint" or "signature" in the signal noise. This "fingerprint" can be used to predict the type and severity of corrosion that is occurring. By comparison, conventional electrochemical techniques such as LPR, EIS, HDA and EFM rely on a steady-state analogy for the determination of general corrosion rates. Early studies were carried out using potential EN measurements, using time domain, statistical and frequency domain analyses to characterise the electrochemical response of systems undergoing localised corrosion. Current EN measurements followed quickly using zero resistance ammetry to study the current noise between two identical electrodes. For general corrosion processes, EN has been demonstrated independently by several workers to provide information similar to LPR. Noise technology has been used to study systems undergoing very low to very high rates of corrosion, for example, coatings performance, passive systems undergoing pit initiation/propagation, condensing systems, systems undergoing stress corrosion cracking, and general corrosion through to the very high corrosion rates experienced during chemical cleaning processes. This review will describe: state of the art methods and probes used to measure EN, data acquisition requirements, theory to analyze the signal and to relate the signal to corrosion rates and types, the results of EN field trials, and laboratory results in environments similar to gaspipelines.

Book excerpt: This book offers a review of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and its application in online condition monitoring of electrochemical devices, focusing on the practicalities of performing fast and accurate EIS. The first part of the book addresses the theoretical aspects of the fast EIS technique, including stochastic excitation signals, time-frequency signal processing, and statistical analysis of impedance measurements. The second part presents an application of the fast EIS technique for condition monitoring and evaluates the performance of the proposed fast EIS methodology in three different types of electrochemical devices: a Li-ion battery, a Li-S cell, and a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell. Uniquely, in addition to theoretical aspects the book provides practical guidelines for implementation, commissioning, and exploitation of EIS for condition monitoring of electrochemical devices, making it a valuable resource for practicing engineers as well as researchers.

Book excerpt: Impedance analysis and many other electrochemical corrosion monitoring techniques are primarily used for uniform corrosion, where the corrosion patterns occur uniformly over the exposed surface. In order to map localised corrosion, where the corrosion is typically concentrated within a small area, a wire beam electrode can be used. A wire beam electrode is a surface that is divided into a matrix of mini-electrodes so that the corrosion rate at different points can be monitored. However, manual connection of each mini-electrode to the measurement device can prove cumbersome. The final chapter of this thesis describes the design and testing of specialised multiplexing hardware to automate the process. In general, the thesis shows that by careful conditioning of the electrochemical noise prior to analysis, many of the problems with the technique of impedance estimation from the electrochemical noise data can be overcome. It is shown that the electrochemical noise impedance estimation can be extended to encompass a time varying, frequency dependent quantity for studying dynamic systems; that phase information can be recovered from electrochemical noise for the purpose of constructing Nyquist impedance diagrams; and that asymmetric electrodes can be detected without requiring additional measurements.time varying syste.

Book excerpt: Potential and current noise data have been collected for pure iron foils exposed to 0.5N sodium chloride (NaCl) that was aerated, deaerated, or aerated with sodium nitrite (NaNO2) added as inhibitor. Potential and current noise data were obtained at the beginning of each hour over a 24-h period either sequentially or simultaneously. Statistical and spectral analyses were performed resulting in noise resistance values. For the noise resistance Rn = ?V/?I, where ?V and ?I are the standard deviation values of potential and current, respectively, similar values as for the polarization resistance Rp determined with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) at the end of the tests were obtained. The spectral noise resistance Rosn obtained from spectral analysis of simultaneously collected current and potential data agreed satisfactorily with Rp and Rn for aerated and inhibited solutions. Electrochemical noise and impedance data have also been obtained for two polymer coatings on cold-rolled steel during immersion in 0.5N NaCl for five months. The two types of measurements clearly distinguished between the relatively poor performance of the alkyd system and the excellent performance of the epoxy polyamide system. Similar trends with exposure time were observed for the pore resistance Rpo and Rp, on the one hand, and Rn and Rosn on the other hand. However, the numerical values of the parameters obtained with EIS were different from those obtained with electrochemical noise analysis (ENA).

It is therefore necessary to develop methods that can provide information concerning the corrosion reactions occurring under biofilms. Electrochemical techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), electrochemical noise analysis (ENA), and measurements of pit propagation rates for thin metal foils have been evaluated as tools for the study of localized corrosion in MIC. Initial studies have been carried out in abiotic NaCl solutions. Software has been prepared for collection and analysis of electrochemical noise data. It has been found that use of potential noise alone can lead to erroneous conclusions concerning the occurrence of pitting for Al alloys and the inhibition of corrosion of iron. However, current noise seems to be directly related to the extent of pitting. EIS has been used to detect the initiation and propagation of localized corrosion and to confirm the conclusions reached for the ENA-data. For iron in NaCl, the noise resistance had similar values as the polarization resistance determined by EIS. In thin foil tests, penetration of Al and nickel foils has been measured during exposure to 0.5 N NaCl.

Book excerpt: Corrosion and the associated maintenance cost the United States Navy an estimated amount of over $4 billion annually [1]. The primary protective measure against corrosion in seafaring vessels is anti-corrosive paint coatings, and therefore monitoring the health of these coatings would allow more productive and cost-effective maintenance. Using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) testing, breakdown of painted coatings can be detected before it becomes visually apparent. Due to this, thin-film Ag/AgCl electrodes along with a small potentiostat and computer interface would allow for effective, modular corrosion-detecting devices. These sensors could be used to monitor the health of the anti-corrosive coatings on Navy Ships, which would reduce maintenance time and costs, and increase the safety and lifespan of these vessels. To determine whether these sensors would be able to collect usable data, a small, corrosion-resistant fixture was developed on which to mount panels coated in Army Chemical Agent Resistant Coating (CARC) with thin-film Ag/AgCl electrodes attached. Atmospheric corrosion data collected during rural atmospheric exposure in the Pennsylvania State University Atmospheric Corrosion Testing Site and marine atmospheric exposure in Redington Beach, Florida was used to determine the reliability of these applique sensors over time. A variety of corrosion-monitoring metrics were also evaluated to determine useful metrics for evaluating the health of these coatings. It was found that the applique electrodes were able to perform consistently with respect to control testing, and the metrics determined to be the most useful for determining the health of coatings using EIS were: low-frequency (~50 mHz) impedance, difference in magnitude of impedance over various frequency ranges, and, when zinc is present in a coating, open circuit potential.
