Book excerpt: When horses outlive their usefulness to humans, they are often treated as disposable -- auctioned off and sent to the slaughterhouse. But thanks to the work of rescue organizations and horse sanctuaries, many of these formerly unwanted horses are enjoying genuine appreciation and newfound freedom. The horses in this book were abused, neglected, abandoned, rejected. They are lame, old, blind, or just unattractive according to some notions of beauty. Some are crossbreeds with no clearly defined bloodline. Others are wild horses forced off public lands. All have been given a second chance to live a meaningful and dignified life. To document these remarkable creatures, acclaimed equine photographer Tony Stromberg traveled to sanctuaries across North America to capture the soul of "working-class" equines. Through Stromberg's gorgeous photography, The Forgotten Horses reveals the profound spirit of these animals and honors the people and sanctuaries that have offered them a well-deserved home.

Book excerpt: This book was written for you - someone who loves horses - and cares enough to want to improve their welfare. It provides simple instructions on how every horse person can do something to help unwanted horses. The book describes how you can make a difference just by sharing a post on Facebook from a rescue page or by educating others that American horses are still slaughtered across the borders. It will describe how to find a reputable rescue to donate, or adopt a horse. The book also details the process of purchasing a horse from a killpen or at an auction. And for those who want to dive in fully, it provides details on how to start your own 501c3 horse rescue organization. The problem of unwanted horses is complicated, systemic and there is no simple answer. The first step is to acknowledge the problem and open your eyes to all factors that make horses unwanted. Where do they come from? Why are they unwanted, and finally how do we make unwanted horses wanted?Creative ideas, collaboration and committed people are the answer. Brace yourself. Rescuing animals is an addictive high when successful and a crushing low when not. Regardless, the net sum of the experience is overwhelmingly positive and will change you forever.

Book excerpt: The U.S. veterinary medical profession contributes to society in diverse ways, from developing drugs and protecting the food supply to treating companion animals and investigating animal diseases in the wild. In a study of the issues related to the veterinary medical workforce, including demographics, workforce supply, trends affecting job availability, and capacity of the educational system to fill future demands, a National Research Council committee found that the profession faces important challenges in maintaining the economic sustainability of veterinary practice and education, building its scholarly foundations, and evolving veterinary service to meet changing societal needs. Many concerns about the profession came into focus following the outbreak of West Nile fever in 1999, and the subsequent outbreaks of SARS, monkeypox, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, highly pathogenic avian influenza, H1N1 influenza, and a variety of food safety and environmental issues heightened public concerns. They also raised further questions about the directions of veterinary medicine and the capacity of public health service the profession provides both in the United States and abroad. To address some of the problems facing the veterinary profession, greater public and private support for education and research in veterinary medicine is needed. The public, policymakers, and even medical professionals are frequently unaware of how veterinary medicine fundamentally supports both animal and human health and well-being. This report seeks to broaden the public's understanding and attempts to anticipate some of the needs and measures that are essential for the profession to fulfill given its changing roles in the 21st century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, horses were ubiquitous in America. They plowed the fields, transported people and goods within and between cities and herded livestock. About a million of them were shipped overseas to serve in World War I. Equine related industries employed vast numbers of stable workers, farriers, wainwrights, harness makers and teamsters. Cities were ringed with fodder-producing farmland, and five-story stables occupied prime real estate in Manhattan. Then, in just a few decades, the horses vanished in a wave of emerging technologies. Those technologies fostered unprecedented economic growth, and with it a culture of recreation and leisure that opened a new place for the horse as an athletic teammate and social companion.
