Book Synopsis The Unknown Gertrude Jekyll by : Gertrude Jekyll
Download or read book The Unknown Gertrude Jekyll written by Gertrude Jekyll and published by Frances Lincoln. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a selection of 200 of the best articles and other writings by Gertrude Jekyll, who 'changed the face of England more than any save the Creator himself and, perhaps, Capability Brown'. Although Miss Jekyll designed around 400 gardens, none remains as she intended and few exist today in any recognizable form. Her enduring influence has been achieved not through her spade but through her pen. She published 15 books and contributed well over a thousand articles, notes and letters to numerous magazines and newspapers. But although the books are well known, until now, all but a handful of her other writings have been accessible only to scholars – a situation that this selection redresses. This book covers themes that include garden planning, wild and woodland gardening, climbing plants, water gardening and garden ornament, and includes selected articles. This is a gem of garden writing that all who are interested in Jekyll, planting and design will be delighted to discover.
Book Synopsis The Gardens of Gertrude Jekyll by : Richard Bisgrove
Download or read book The Gardens of Gertrude Jekyll written by Richard Bisgrove and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Should there be any doubt that Gertrude Jekyll was among the greatest practitioners of the art of gardening (there isn't, of course), a survey of this book will quickly confirm her almost totemic status in twentieth-century ornamental horticulture."--Wayne Winterrowd, Horticulture, The Magazine of American Gardening "[This book] is scholarly, well-written, and based on original research. The Gardens of Gertrude Jekyll is the most innovative study of the patron saint of modern gardeners since Jane Brown's pioneering Gardens of a Golden Afternoon appeared ten years ago. . . . [Bisgrove's] is the most detailed and comprehensive analysis ever made of Gertrude Jekyll's gardening."--Charles Quest-Ritson, Gardens Illustrated "The Gardens of Gertrude Jekyll serves as a living complement to her gardening ideas, indicating the scope and variety her gardening vision could assume. Richard Bisgrove has mined extensive archives for Jekyll's most effective planning schemes, and illustrates them with photographs of her existing gardens. He helpfully divides chapters by types of gardenincluding formal gardens, rose gardens, wild gardens, steps and walks, and sun and shade."--Ann Geneva, Literary Review "Gertrude Jekyll is famous the world over as the mother of the lush English garden. . . . The stage is set for an updated revival of the Jekyll cult. Her philosophical commitment to native plants and gardens that incorporate existing heathland and woods makes her environmentally up to date."--Diana Ketcham, New York Times "The most comprehensive study I have seen of the garden-making ideas of this astonishingly prolific lady . . . This is a book that can be read cover to cover -- but one to which people will refer time and again over the years."--Arthur Hellyer, Financial Times "Richard Bisgrove must now be firmly established as one of our most authoritative, painstaking yet easy-to-read garden historians . . . The writing is a happy combination of scholarship and art . . . readers must be equally delighted with Andrew Lawson's magnificent photographs."--Graham Stuart Thomas, The Garden

She mixed with royalty and her name was associated with the greatest gardeners of her time, Gertrude Jekyll, William Robinson and E. A. Bowles. In 1894 she joined the Royal Horticultural Society and in 1897 she was one of the first sixty recipients (and one of only two women) to receive the Victoria medal of honour. Warley Garden in Spring and Summer, a book of photographs, was published in 1909 and in 1912 she published The Genus Rosa. In the same year she was awarded the grande médaille Geoffroi St Hilaire from the Société d'Acclimatation de France and in 1924 received the Dean Hole medal from the National Rose Society. An acknowledged and admired expert in her field Ellen Willmott died in 1934 aged 76, alone and nearly bankrupt. First published in 1980 this carefully researched biography is a fascinating account of a woman who was infamous in her time and whose mark can still be seen on the horticultural world today. Miss Willmott of Warley Place is republished to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Ellen Willmott's birth.

The book describes 300 years of Jekyll family history, including the family's emigration to America in the eighteenth century. The book's subtitle "Essays on the life of a working amateur" echoes Gertrude Jekyll's description of herself in her first book, Wood and Garden, published in 1899. Included are contributions by three members of the Jekyll family, two great great nieces, Primrose Arnander and Annabel Freyberg, and a great nephew, David McKenna, the last surviving member of the family to have known her well, who has written the foreword and postscript. Much of this information is hitherto unpublished and is made available through the co-operation of the Jekyll Estate, as well as personal and family memories of Gertrude Jekyll, her sister and brothers. -- Cover.

They are not only essential reading for today’s gardeners, but a master’s compelling reflection on the deep sources and informing principles of his art. The Education of a Gardener offers charming, sometimes pointed anecdotes about patrons, colleagues, and, of course, gardens, together with lucid advice for the gardener. Page discusses how to plan a garden that draws on the energies of the surrounding landscape, determine which plants will do best in which setting, plant for the seasons, handle color, and combine trees, shrubs, and water features to rich and enduring effect. To read The Education of a Gardener is to wander happily through a variety of gardens in the company of a wise, witty, and knowledgeable friend. It will provide pleasure and insight not only to the dedicated gardener, but to anyone with an interest in abiding questions of design and aesthetics, or who simply enjoys an unusually well-written and thoughtful book.
