Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States Magazine and Democratic Review, Vol. 3: Containing the Political and Literary Portions of the Numbers Published in September, October, November, and December, 1838 As a body it may be said to have been disorganized, - dcmoralized to speak in military phrase. Rarely have the leaders of a great party, in the constant struggles of parties in free states, been thrown suddenly into a more critical and arduous position. But they proved not unequal to the occasion, not untrue to their cause. Tnn message or tee extra session saved the cause, and saved the country. They planted themselves on a rock of impregnable prin cipic, and unfurling a flag that streamed like a meteor to the troubled air, sounded a most gallant rallying note, over the whole length and breadth of the land, to invite their party to gather around that rock of rege, and recombine their broken organization under the shadow of that flag. A year has not yet elapsed, and the course of events is already rapidly justifying the bold wisdom of the high position then assumed. The process of reorganization has been steadily going forward, in spite of the herculean exertions of open foes from without, and false friends within, to impede and dis tract it; and though not yet entirely consummated, has reached a stage that is quite satisfactory to us, as placing its ultimate complete success beyond fear of danger. The democracy has recovered from its paralysis of panic, and is beginning to put forth again the ener gies of its renewed youth. In no former contest has it ever evinced a finer and nobler spirit. This is signally shewn in the primary assemblies of the people, which have of late appeared every where animated by the most generous zeal and the highest confidence, that zeal and confidence which, springing alone from a deep sense of the righteousness of the democratic side of the great issue now joined, are both the strongest incentives to exertion, and the surest harbingers of success. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States Magazine and Democratic Review, Vol. 3: October, 1838 It is a remark of Chateaubriand, that in a country where all men write and speak, we must make up our minds to hear patiently a great deal of nonsense. The human mind, in its Infinite modifica tions, is prone to exaggerations and extravagancies; it has its day dreams, and its waking visions, its optical illusions, and spectral hallucinations. The most unsound theories are Often the most plau sible; sophistry is often more specious than truth. Talent and integ rity are not always efl'ectual guards against the approaches of false hood they do but lend strength and zeal to the seductions of error. Clear perception of truth is rarer than the ingenious defence of fallacy. It 18 more difficult to think justly than with brilliancy. Common sense is, after all, the most uncommon sense. TO reason well is a rarer faculty than to reason much. For one man, whose deductions are uniformly sound, you will meet with a hundred whose oplnlons are striking In statement, and happy in expression; This world is one vast academy of Laputa, and that satire of the: misanthropist has been drawn from truth. The race of projectors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States Magazine and Democratic Review, 1843, Vol. 12 The work of M. Regnault, a strong liberal writer of the present day, in Paris, we are led to notice in the pre sent Article, from having observed the announcement that it is shortly to be translated and republished here. Its title sufficiently indicates its character. The Criminal History of the English Government, from the earliest massa cres in Ireland to the poisoning of the Chinese, written by a Frenchman, is not likely to present a picture very gay in its colors, or drawn with a very delicate pencil. The Criminal His tory of the English Government, ex claims M. Regnault in his preface, needs neither declamation nor hyper bole. The facts spealr for themselves. To narrate is to accuse; to read isto condemn. In these hideous annals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States Magazine, and Democratic Review, Vol. 1: Containing the Political and Literary Portions of the Numbers Published in October, 1837, and January, February and March, 1838 So many false ideas have insensibly attached themselves to the term democracy, ' as connected with our party politics, that we deem it necessary here, at the outset, to make a full and free profession of the cardinal principles of political faith on which we take our stand; principles to which we are devoted with an unwavering force of conviction and earnestness of enthusiasm which, ever since they were first presented to our minds, have constantly grown and strengthened by contemplation of them, and of the incalculable capabilities of social improvement of which they contain the germs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States Magazine and Democratic Review, 1841, Vol. 9 The second book, with remarkable precision and brevity, enu merates, classes, and defines all offences. Any contravention Of the penal law is deemed an offence, and, according to the object it affects, is either public or private. Public offences are those which affect the sovereignty of the state, in its executive, legislative, or judiciary departments; the public peace; the revenue; the elec tive franchise; the public records; the current coin; the com merce, manufactures, and trade of the country; the freedom of the press; the public health; the public property; the public roads, and navigable waters; and whatever restrains the free ex crcise of religion, or corrupts the morals of the people. Private offences are such as injure individuals in their reputation, persons, civil rights, political privileges, profession, or trade, their proper ty, and means of acquiring or preserving it. Suicide being an Offence against one's own person, for which the friends alone, and not the perpetrator himself, can be punished, is not recognised as an offence. Nor are other acts of self-infliction or debasement, too gross to be mentioned in words, suffered to pollute the pages of the public law. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States Magazine and Democratic Review, Vol. 6: July, 1839 Deeply as the cotton interest has suffered from this artificial policy, the produce and manufacture of wool has been still more frequently and more deeply plunged into distress, by the complicated monopolies which the paper money system has created and sustained. Its situation in this respect has not attracted so much general sympathy throughout the Union, because its extent is greatly inferior to that of our great commercial staple - Cotton. As an article of the highest importance to the health and comfort of our citizens of all classes, Wool deserves to be relieved from the suicidal experiments of protection which have placed both the producers of the raw material, and the manufacturers, wholly within the power of a small number of individuals. By commanding the currency, they are able to excite production to the highest pitch of activity at one moment, and to paralyze it the next, whenever their immediate profits may be enhanced by such sudden u ctuations. Control over currency has, in all ages, given unlimited power over the laboring and producing classes. One of the most striking and instructive illustrations of this fact, which is to be met with in modern history, may be found in the preamble of an English statute, the thirteenth chapter of 25th Henry VIII, entitled concerning the number of sheep one should keep. So clearly is the in uence of a superabundant currency upon the great staple of England shown in this authentic detail of the manifold grievances arising from the power of monopoly which a small number of individuals were able to exercise by their great abundance of moveable substance, which the vast increase of money, within a few previous years from the discovery of America, had brought within their control, that we make no apology for giving it at large.
