Download or read book The European Union in the 1990s written by Paul Graham Taylor and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the European Union? The European Union in the 1990s answers this question by presenting an overview of the EU: what it now is, how it evolved into its present form, how the sense of identity with its citizens sustains it, and what is the relationship with the outside world which bestsuits it. Paul Taylor investigates the range of conflicting views on the role of the European Union, and is sharply critical of both the growth of Euroscepticism and calls for a Federalist approach. He shows that, as the conditions of sovereignty are continually changing in the modern world, furtherintegration does not threaten the nation state. On the contrary, he asserts that integration brings advantages for the citizens in Europe. The author sees the European Union as a unique arrangement between states, beneficial to the majority of individuals without threatening national sovereignty. The European Union on the 1990s provides a clear, accessible overview of the EU, ideal for students and those involved in the politics of the European Union.

Book excerpt: More than 25 years after the fall of the Soviet Union, European integration remains a work in progress, especially in those Eastern European nations most dramatically reshaped by democratization and economic liberalization. This volume assembles detailed, empirically grounded studies of eleven states—Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, and the former East Germany—that went on to join the European Union. Each chapter analyzes the political, economic, and social transformations that have taken place in these nations, using a comparative approach to identify structural similarities and assess outcomes relative to one another as well as the rest of the EU.

Book Synopsis The United States and the European Community in the 1990s by : Kevin Featherstone
Download or read book The United States and the European Community in the 1990s written by Kevin Featherstone and published by Palgrave MacMillan. This book was released on 1993 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines United States-European Community relations at a critical juncture in international relations. It analyses the varied forms of interdependence that constrain their relations, and it considers how far the current management of their relations is at variance with the reality of changing conditions. The book confronts the problem of how to analyse such a complex set of relations as those which exist between the United States and the European Community. It takes as its main theoretical foundation the concept of interdependence, and it relates this to the political, economic and social dimensions of US-EC relations. The policy dimension of the book highlights the dilemma on the current US-EC agenda: that is, to assess the impact on their bilateral relations of the changed global and trans-Atlantic conditions of the 1980s and 1990s, and to make the necessary strategic changes. The opportunity exists for the most far-reaching revision of their relations in over forty years.

Book Synopsis European Security in the 1990s by : W. Laqueur
Download or read book European Security in the 1990s written by W. Laqueur and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rarely if ever have the political, economic, and military foundations of the Western Alliance been in such a state of flux. Walter Laqueur and Leon Sloss, therefore, deserve credit not just for the quality of the analysis in this superb book but also for the timeliness of its appearance. As Laqueur says in his chapter "Touring the Western European Defense Hori zon," if the likely development of European defense policies is not particularly reassuring, at least it gives no grounds for despair. The list of problems we face is a daunting one. First there is the spiralling cost of defense expenditures, particularly in the absence of significant NATO or inter-European cooperation. This is particu larly serious in light of the reluctance to increase, or even maintain, current expen ditures in the midst of Mikhail Gorbachev's "peace offensive" and the extraordinary changes in Eastern Europe, both of which have had a dramatic impact on Western public opinion. There is also a problem in the perceived relative economic decline of the United States vis-a-vis Western Europe and Japan, which only exacerbates calls to reduce the number of American troops in Europe. Other dangers to the political cohesion and military credibility of the alliance include demographic trends that threaten current manpower levels, transatlantic acrimony over the burden-sharing issue, and political pressures (particularly in West Germany) toward denucleariza tion and even neutralism.
